Anyone get upset stomach from vitamins?

Bob M - 27 Jan 2005 22:07 GMT Anyone get an upset stomach from vitamins? I haven't figured out exactly what is giving me an upset stomach (and it may be a combination of vitamins), but the upset stomach is hard for me, as it causes what feels like hunger pangs. This causes me to eat again (nothing bad -- usually raw carrots, a pickle, etc.), which I shouldn't have to do since I just ate.

Deb - 27 Jan 2005 23:55 GMT YES. My doctor says its common. Iron does it for me and so does potassium supplements. I get queasy and often have heartburn.
Magnesium is the active ingredient in Milk of Magnesia so some people get the runs from it.

When I was anemic after having my daughter, I had to take iron pills that always made my stomach hurt/make me feel like I was going to be sick.
Not that it could be the cause of your stomach issues, but that's the only vitamin I've found that bothers me.
However, a multi-vitamin with iron didn't bother me. Just the straight iron pills.

Just the straight > iron pills. Sometime over the 2nd half of last year I developed an intolerance to flax oil, borage oil, and fish oil supplements. They actually make me vomit! I had no problem with them for YEARS and suddenly they make me sick. It DID coincide with me starting to eat a homemade flaxmeal/nut cereal pretty much every day for breakfast, so it may be a combination that's causing the problem.

Dan - 28 Jan 2005 01:50 GMT Iron is better absorbed on an empty stomach but can cause stomach upset. Can also cause constipation, just what you need on this diet ;-)
On the flaxseed oil, did you maybe change brands? Even if not, the manufacturer may have altered the formula. I tried taking fish oil caps, made my face break out like mad (especially appealing on a guy in his mid-40's ;-)

I even compared the origin of manufacture, since it was happening with different varieties (i.e., flax and borage), thinking maybe it was the gel caps rather than the contents, but when I then tried fish oil instead from yet another manufacturer and STILL go sick, I gave up on taking the oils in supplemental form. I figure I probably get enough from my cereal and don't feel a need to push it at this point.

Yep, its the reason I have a protein shalke if nothing else in the morning. A vitamin belly ache is a bitch.

370/283/270 Single malt scotch is awesome (NO it does NOT have carbs as DON'T vodka, gin, rum, bourbon, etc generally) Malt can be made low carb through the judicious use of yeast. Low carb beer? Uh...yeah. Read the books. You can have more than eggs for breakfast. Yes calories do count. Ketosticks are not neccessary to lose weight.

When I used to get upset stomach with vitamins, I would take them before I went to bed. That way, I missed out on all the upset/burping the vitamin, etc. I switched to a different Trader Joe's brand and now I can take them during the day. Kristen
Bev-Ann - 28 Jan 2005 12:15 GMT I saw a report on our local news the other day that said multi-vitamins should be taken with food so that the fat-soluble ones are absorbed better. This might also help to lessen any stomach problems you might get with them. And I read somewhere years ago that you should avoid caffeine for 2 hours because it can restrict the absorption of some, especially iron if it's part of the formula.

It's good to know that others have the same problem; now, I just need to figure out what's causing my problems.

I just switched brands and my problem was solved. Plus I now take them ONLY with a meal.
The name of the bad one was theragram I think. OneSource is the good one, only I wish it didn't have so much vitamin E. I pee yellow so I know it has lots of vitamin C.
I get the same stomach upset drinking Earl Grey Tea. Don't know what they put in that stuff.

Bev-Ann - 29 Jan 2005 01:58 GMT Yellow pee is from excess B vitamins, not C. It's nothing to worry about either way. What do you consider too be much vitamin E? Every multi formula I've seen has less than 100UI. That's not very much at all. I take 800UI of vitamin E on top of the 50UI in my multi every day.

Chuck Chatham - 28 Jan 2005 19:27 GMT I too ONLY take my vitamins with or right after a good meal. Wife gives me a handful and it didn't take long to figure out that they would go down much better with something on my stomach. Otherwise its burp city and if it is late in the day - no sleep tonight.

Be careful of a daily aspirin.
My tummy growls with too much sugar alcohol.

The same thing happens to me if I take a multi or B vitamin formula that contains yeast. You can smell the yeast as soon as you open the container. HTH.

Probably a result of the 'binding' agent. Unless you're taking something weird (weight loss vitamins, herbals, etc.). Weight loss vitamins (One-A-Day Weight Smart) in particular have some ingredients that can cause stomach upset in some people.
Other than that, switching brands will probably help. I like Centrum, Swiss, and One-A-Day (Men's/Women's).
Taking it after your meal and/or with milk might also help.
Time-release formulas would probably help too.
I've also heard of people almost choking to death on a vitamin, as there are no regulations on size, shape, etc. (more and more people are looking for more-and-more in their vitamin, and that, combined with binding compounds, expecially those time released vitamins, make some pills quite large).
I've never choked, but I've had some that I just could not swallow.
