Update on Laureen

I just spoke with Laureen's sister-in-law Marlene on the phone, and she said
that Laureen is doing very well after her surgery.  She's been up walking
around twice today (tat's unreal to me, sos oon after surgery!) and with the
help of some pain medication her discomfort is minimal.  Marlene said that
Laureen is upbeat and positive and expects to be released from the hospital
Thursday morning.

Incidentally, I had a nice chat with Marlene and learned that she herself
had the GB surgery 18 months ago and has lost 115 pounds.

I'm counting my blessings, as should we all, that I'm one of the ones who
finds it relatively easy to lose weight on my low-carb diet.  It was
unfortunately not so for Laureen, and she chose the gastric bypass as a last
resort.  She felt that she was dying from her obesity and views this measure
as saving her life.

I for one respect her decision to undergo this surgery and wish her all the
very best.  I pray that she quickly regains her health and realizes all  the
benefits of her surgery with minimal complications.

Thank you Peter.  I thought I still had Laureen's cell number but now
of course I can't find it!

Take care,

Following a lead to give up on conventional means is not beneficial for
most.

Laureen has declared failure.  While she reports her doctor claims a 1 in
400 mortality rate, elsewhere the rate is quoted as 1 in 50 for the first 30
days.  If you add the percentage that have complications, WLS is a
frightening practice.

In the book "Keeping It Off" the authors claim that the 5% who not only lose
weight, but keep it off are distinguished by their taking personal control
of their diet.  The qualities that win: "commitment; sense of purpose; the
ability to organize and control; self-trust"

I am not sure how many people with the ability to organize, plenty of
self trust, etc, set out to lose weight, and then somehow experience
priority shift, denial etc, and pile the pounds back on.

These winning qualities are necessary, but are they sufficient?

Take you as an example. You showed that you have plenty of
determination etc. You also mentioned that your previous weight loss
attempts -- non-LC -- were failures. They did not work because of some
powerful biological reasons. Something made you give up.

Those same successful dieters who you mentioned, who did keep weight
off, report several unsuccessful attempts before. That also ought to
tell us that there is something beyond determination and willpower.

Willpower is only good if you want to use it. If, one day, you wake up
and decide that dieting is unimportant, no willpower will help as it
is not even being applied.

Hi Igor,

Yes.  The biological drive that leads to regain must have the power to alter
the mind in the same way hunger can.  In this context willpower becomes
meaningless.

I'm hoping that the drive for failure is triggered by some aspect of the
modern way of eating.  If so, diligent use of the right eating techniques
may avert the drive to regain.  I've put my money on LCHF.  However, Paleo
looks like the logical strategy to avoid such a key mystery element of
modern eating.  When I reach goal, I plan to adjust my eating toward Paleo.

It is possible that there is a drive to eat in the manner that is learned as
a child.  Diligence and willpower might stand a chance against such a drive.
So many faithful low carbers return to grain based carbs.  There must be a
reason.

Exactly. Well said.

And living (exercise etc).

What I like about paleo is that my eating is, sort of, on autopilot. I
am not counting anything and am not going hungry and am not
gaining. So, it is not a big burden and even if other life burdens
suddenly appear, dieting will not be in their way.

Could be that they have some unknown (to me) biological issues. I am
not missing grain in the least. Some people do. Maybe there is
something about them that is different biologically, perhaps this is
not all due to "moral qualities".

I have been LCing only for 6 months, not enough to make long term
conclusions with confidence.
