Hi you guys! I felt your prayers! Thank you! It all went off without a
hitch! They were wonderful to me.
I got to the hospital, checked in, was taken upstairs. I broke out into
a cold sweat when they wanted to draw my blood for the ABG's (arterial
blood gases) The level of my blood gases determined whether or not I
would remain intubated post surgically. I breathed a HUGE sigh of
relief when my ABG's were 89 and my oxygen saturation was 100%. I had a
long talk with the anesthesiologist and I told him I prefered no pre op
medication as I wanted to go in drug free and not comprimise my
anesthesia. He agreed. He let me sit up on the OR table with a pillow
behind me understanding that heavy people dont breath well when anxious
lying on their back! He gave me 5 mg of Versed. I said "You got me! I'm
going to sleep now, take good care of me", I felt a mask go over my
face and heard someone say "Goodnight!" I was out in 1 hour in
recovery. I was not in much pain but did experience some "charlie
horse" spasms where my incision was in my abdomen. I was up walking by
5pm. I asked to not have a catheter so when I had to pee I would be
forced to get up and walk. Never once did anyone have to ask me to get
out of bed. I just did it and the nurses were amazed how I need no
prodding to move. On Wed I got to try out my new tummy with 1 ounce per
hour of water for 6 hours, then 2 ounces per hour for 6 hours. My new
tummy holds 2 ounces, that all!!! I was so full! But it empties
quickly. I ate popsicles and drank water all the rest of the day. I
have been on no pain medications since yesterday afternoon. I am a bit
weak, a tad dizzy, emotional, but proud of myself for getting through
it with flying colors. It really isnt so bad. The staples stay in until
next Thursday and they sting and pull a bit. My belly muscles are
incredibly sore and tight. I weighed in on the hospital scale at 393. I
will weigh in at the docs office next Thursday. Today I had water, sf
popsicles, sf jello, and a minute amount of watered down apple juice.
Talk to you soon, have to go rest

Hi Laureen,
I know this sounds odd coming from an agnostic (at best), but Thank
God.
I've been worried. Surgery is always a gamble at its most basic
level.
I'm relieved and happy for you. :-)
Take care - extra good care,

I find this very disturbing. I feel like I did when Michael Jackson was
holding a teen's hand and telling how it is OK to share a bed.
I understand that Laureen was out of time. However, I believe weight
control will be commonly achievable in the future. I fear that Laureen's
success would lead others to give up on less drastic efforts to control
weight.
Laureen is still has significant risk of untoward outcome.

Congratulations. You are officially the biggest a.s I've met in quite
some time.
Not only have you likened Laureen to a probable child molester in your
zeal to moralize about her choice you've also made it pretty clear
you'd have been happier if she'd died on the damn table - and still
plan on looking for a bad outcome so you can say "I told you so".
Sewer slugs have more to recommend them than you.

You probably don't need me to tell you that this was a poorly chosen
analogy, right? I understand you used it to express the depth of your
concern about possible promotion of the procedure, but there are other
ways to do that!
> I understand that Laureen was out of time. However, I believe weight
> control will be commonly achievable in the future. I fear that Laureen's

Folks here already know how long and hard Laureen's struggle to control
her weight and its impact on her health has been. I don't believe she
nor anyone else enters into such a procedure blithely. It's a last
resort and a calculated risk by those who are, as you put it, running
"out of time."
We don't have to approve of everything someone else does in order to
support them when they make hard choices that might not be our own.
> Laureen is still has significant risk of untoward outcome.
And what do you imagine her risk of mortality was if she didn't get
under and stay under 400lbs?
It's all relative. I would agree that the risk level of this procedure
makes it *generally inappropriate* for all but the most gravely,
morbidly obese for whom all other efforts at weight control have failed
to achieve necessary results. I think it's up to each one, with his/her
physician to decide if that's where he/she's at.
I also think that any position on an issue that requires the suppression
of accurate information to keep it from competent adults is a shaky one
right out of the gate.
It's possible to support others without agreeing with everything they
do, IME. In fact, it's probably the only way.

When the crowd is stampeding over the cliff, I'm the one who steps aside and
politely tries to talk to them as they pass by. It has no effect.
Sometimes, I wonder if I should be more assertive in such situations, but it
is contrary to my personality. Probably, shouting into the stampede would
have no effect either.
There was a time, when the consensus of this forum was opposed to WLS.

I oppose WLS when someone considers it without trying less drastic methods
first. Personally, it is absolutely not an option for me.

Oh...one can oppose WLS but also support the person. There is a huge
difference. Try to learn about that.
FOB - 05 Feb 2005 18:40 GMT
There's a difference in being opposed to something and ragging on someone
who has chosen it, particularly after it has been done. I would personally
never have WLS, nor would I recommend it, but I certainly defend the right
of others to choose it and hope that they benefit from it. None of us walks
in another's shoes and we cannot make their decisions for them.
