"Study links juice, chubby children"

"Monday, February 7, 2005 Posted: 11:09 AM EST (1609 GMT)"

"CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Sweet drinks -- whether Kool-Aid with sugar or
all-natural apple juice -- seem to raise the risk of pudgy preschoolers
getting fatter, new research suggests."

Do you really need a study to show this?

Unless you cite your references for that statement I fail to see why I
should believe you.

This is an important study, because it shows that Fruit Juice is just as bad
as High Fructose Colas.

Fruit juice doesn't grow on trees, fall from the sky, nor run in rivers or
underground lakes/streams. It only exists because of the efforts of mankind.
Hence, it should be on the highly suspected list of killer foodstuffs.

You do realize you could substitute the words olive oil for that, don't
you? Also, shelled nuts, cooked meat (unless you happen to be in the woods
after a forest fire) and coffee.

Whoa! I see a webpage with links to Mercola coming on.

That's a good point.  We probably shouldn't be using olive oil, but eating
olives instead.  Same with shelled nuts and coffee.  Now, cooked meat is a
bit different....as you point out that charred meat would have been tasty.

I see fruit juice as particularly bad, though, as it is simply flavored
sugar water.  Some thing are just less bad than others.  Not everything that
results from technology is bad.

That is true.  I guess all those people who say "it's 100% fruit juice
instead of sugared juice" now will know that that statement might not be
true.  I was thinking more along the lines of adding calories due to juice
("real" or fake) or soda is bound to cause people to become fat.
(Although I do note that I've met people who seem to be able to drink soda
with no ill effect.)

"Fruit juice", though obviously not as good as fruit itself  (because
more vitamins and micronutrients, as well as fiber, are available in
the whole fruit) can have a place in a healthy diet.  However, that
place isn't in baby bottles, swilled from 20-ounce containers, etc.

The reason they used to make 4-ounce "juice glasses" was because that's
a more appropriate portion size for this calorie-dense food.  Orange
juice, for example, is more easily transported than fresh oranges, and
small amounts can be a useful source of vitamin C.
