My Experience With Splenda

Steviva_Stevia - 08 Feb 2005 03:52 GMT
Hi... my name is Thom King. I am the president of Steviva Brands, Inc.
We carry a line of all natural stevia based sugar alternatives.

About 5 years I was at the Natural Health Expo in  Los Angeles,
California. I passed by a Canadian business sampling Macroons that they
claimed to be made from a new all natural sweetener made by Johnson and
Johnson called Splenda. I have a bit of a sweet tooth... good thing I
can get all the Stevia I want for free. But, back to my story. I
sampled one of the macaroons. It was the closest thing to sugar I have
ever tasted. I told my partner... that this stuff could end up putting
us out of business.

I ate about 5 of those Splenda Macaroons. A few hours later I was
doubled over with lower intestinal cramps from hell.  I had the worst
gas I have ever had... sorry if I am grossing you out... but the truth
must be told. I was making myself sick as well as the passengers I had
with me in my car. I finally had to pull over and let somebody else
drive because I was so ill.

Since that time I have had Splenda a couple more times and it has done
the same thing to me. I know as a fact that is can't be good for you. I
recently had an article published posted on our web site.  The article
is entitled "The Irony of Better Living Through Chemistry" Equal
and Splenda Throw Blows Over Advertising Claims - May The Best Chemist
Win. It makes a good read. You can find it at
http://www.emediawire.com/releases/2004/12/emw186251.htm.

One interesting note: Sucralose is actually around 600 times sweeter
than sugar. It must be cut or diluted in order to be palatable. It just
happens that is cut with Maltodextrin. If you are diabetic, suffer from
hypoglycemia, or are on a low carb diet, then you must know that
Maltodextrin will raise insulin levels and basically wipe out any
progress you are attempting to make.

We have been trying to get our product into Curves locations. We
already are in several clubs like it. However, the owners and directors
of Curves insist that Splenda is an all natural product and it cost
less than ours. I don't think this is a battle we are going to win
until somebody at Curves gets really sick.

This is the end of my little rant. If you are interested in Stevia and
the health benefits, I suggest you go to http://www.steviapowder.com.

Thanks!
Kiwi Byrd - 08 Feb 2005 05:06 GMT
Interesting.  When you say you have had Splenda a couple more times with the
same result, do you mean Splenda on its own (eg as a sweetener in your
drink) or as an ingredient such as in the macaroons?

I find sugar alcohol causes the same symptoms - was there sugar alcohol in
the products as well as Splenda?

Kiwi Mel
Steviva_Stevia - 08 Feb 2005 15:50 GMT
Kiwi Mel,

Thanks for the questions!

I had Splenda in diet sodas and maple syrup. I am sure that it is not
the sugar alcohols. It has something to do with the Chlorinated sugar
product in Sucralose that raises havoc on the intestines.

If you have problems with sugar alcohols I would suggest Steviva Blend
which is  a blend of the highest quality stevia extract and erythritol,
a filler which is naturally occurring in a variety of foods and derived
from fermented glucose.

We spent 5 years looking for the best filler (erythritol) that had the
most benign effect on digestion and insulin and we found it in
erythritol.

Thanks and have an excellent day.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem easy for Canadians to order it and
splenda is readily available.

Somehow I think I'd rather go with my own experience and that of
millions of others who use Splenda with no problems at all, rather than
a self-serving scare post from a spammer.  And BTW, who the hell cares
about your spat with Curves?

I am sorry if my post has angered you.

I would not say that we are in a spat with Curves as much as we are
concerned about the we beiing of their members.

We are not trying to scare members of this board... on the contrary.
This is just one persons experience and for those of you who like
Splenda and have no adverse reaction to it... continue using it.

"Well being" of their members my *eye*.  The only thing you're
concerned about the well being of is your bank account.
You promote alcohol and tobacco and sugar pushers alike, so you can
spare me the pure motive crap.  You'd take the company that makes
Splenda's money just as quickly as you took Krispy Kreme's.

The occurrences of someone getting sick on Splenda are next to nil. There
is not one thing in the universe that 'somebody' is not allergic or
sensitive to. Even say, Anna Kournikova. Since for every incredibly
beautiful and perfect woman that all the men in the world wants, there is a
guy or two who is totally tired of her sh.t.

But the odds are in the millions.

Now, tell me the odds of the "President" of a company that sells Stevia,
getting horribly ill using Splenda. Blows your mind. Does it not? It Spams
mine, buddy.

   Best Regards,

Sometimes I think a mixture of sweeteners might be better for some things.
Too bad we can't buy unsweetened soft drinks and add our choice of
sweeteners.  DH likes hot dr pepper and rum, but diet dr pepper doesn't seem
to react well to heating.

I didn't know about dr pepper until I'm in my twenties...   the name sort of
scares me so I never ever tried one.  how does it taste like?  i think most
fizzie drinks go flat when heated, is that what you mean by not reacting well to
heating?

I wouldn't know how to describe it, it's just a blend of flavors, it's as
different from cola as it is from rootbeer.  DH likes it hot with rum in it,
but heating the diet version of dr pepper makes it kind of bitter.

It's easy to describe what it tastes like....it take just
like Mr. Pibb, Dr. K., Dr. Smooth, Dr. Slice, Dr. Thunder,
Dr. Publix or Dr. Rocket.  (I'm certain there are more...I
just can't think of them off the top of my head ;-)

Helpful, huh?

============================
It works in baking.  Off all diets for the month of December after 2 1/2
years of dieting, I baked several pies for the family using Splenda.  They
were fine although would have been better with real sugar.  Splenda is
worthless to sweeten coffee, tea and other drinks as it leaves a weird
bitter aftertaste.  It's no good on cereal either...   bleah!  :þ  And it's
very expensive.

how did you type that tougue on the smilie?  v impressive!

the place I work often has got packets of Splenda lying around - so I put a
tablet in my coffee and the coffee didn't taste any sweeter at all.

then this time I bought Splenda in powder and I actually used it in baking
muffins.  I could taste that it's not real sugar from the first bite.

## Use the : on your keyboard for the eyes - then hold down the Alt key, and
using the number pad to the right of your keyboard hit the 0254 keys. Let up
the Alt key. = þ

##  I don't think Splenda is going to be a real big hit except maybe for
baking.

## Yes, you can and the texture isn't the same.  But since I hadn't had any
pie in 2 1/2 years I enjoyed it nonetheless.

thanks for the þ, and I think it's unlikely that I'll buy more splenda in the
future.  the difference between splenda and sugar is especially large when the
muffin is hot.  when it's cold there is hardly any difference.

DH has been using Splenda in his coffee and he seems to like it.  I only
notice it tasting bad if I use too much.  I try to use less Splenda that I
would have sugar in the same recipe.  I have found a lot of recipes have too
much sugar in them to start with.

So of course you're going to make up some "I got deathly ill" story about
something that is of course, NOT Steviva brand stevia.   Very clever.

Nobody would ever guess you're a salesman.  I won't tell anyone.

I did not get "Deathly Ill" and I don't recall using that language. I

Barbara,

Thank you for your comments.

You may have tried stevia powder and experienced a bitter after taste.

I would put Steviva Brand, Stevia Blend which is a blend of the highest
quality stevia extract and erythritol (a filler which is naturally
occurring in a variety of foods and derived from fermented glucose)
against Splenda any day.

Thanks again.

Most of the 'sweets' I have used with some of the sugar alcohols mention
on the label that excessive intake may cause stomach discomfort...and
they do just that for me...and flatulence is also a side benefit!
Life Savers are one...and the sugarless/reduced carb gums are another.
Products I have consumed with Splenda(Sucralose) in them have not caused
this problem.

........my mistake. Here is the stuff from the labels:
Lifesavers-Wint) Green Sugar Free: Sorbitol, natural and Artificial
Flavor, Magnesium Stearate, Aspartame---"Excess Consumption May Have A
Laxative Effect:.

Dentyne Ice--Sorbitol, Gum Base, Mannitol, A & N Flavors, Acacia,
Acesufame Potassium, Aspartame, BHT, Candelilla Wax, Glycerin, Soy
Lectithin and Titanium Dioxide--nothing about after effects

Juicy Fruit Strappleberry:
Made of Sugar, Gum Base, Corn Syrup, Mod. Corn Starch, N & A flavors,
Glycerol, Malic Acid, Citric Acid, Softeners, Fumaric Acid, Aspartame,
SHELLAC(!), Acesufame K, Carnuba Wax( that is what I use on the car!),
BHA and RED 40.  Nothing about side effects.

I chewed and ate a number of these yesterday and am paying the price
today--others around me are too!

I had read ingredients on other low carb thingies that I think mention
the possible side effects, but i was wrong on these.

Apologies.

BTW, the life savers say 14 G Carbs per serving but 13 are sugar
alcohol....leaving a net of 1..supposedly.
