I went to the gym today and it was alot of fun! It is a "curves" type place
and they have a playroom w/babysitting for the kids. I did a half hour which
was twice around the circuit. I think I would've made it around 3 times if I
knew the machines already but they had to show me everything.

I will try to work up to 45 min then 1 hr and I plan to go 3 times a week.
It really depends on the kids - if they cooperate and like the playroom
hopefully I will be able to make this a real part of my routine. The place
is only a few minutes up the block.

well- just came to toot my own horn. I was never one to be very physical but
this is enjoyable and I don't feel lost like I do in a big gym like Bally's.
Also the short spurts of aerobic/machine make it more fun. I would rather
jump off a bridge than do an aerobics class!

oh yeah - they also have a basket of free Atkins Morning Start bars at the
front desk...I helped myself to one on the way out. Not bad but I won't be
buying any.

And try not to take any freebies either.  One of those bars can nullify your
burned calories from working out!  While exercise has benefits beyond weight
loss, you don't want to miss the boost you can give yourself IF you control
diet!

Good you enjoyed your workout!

didn't even think of that. I wasn't really thinking about burning calories
as much as just moving around & maybe getting some muscle tone.

One component of muscle tone is the removal of fat so that the shapely
muscle underneath becomes apparent.  Another component is to have enough
muscle for it to be apparent. Execise will help with both, but dieting is
your first best option.  Keep at it.

And don't forget "WALKING!"  Pushing the stroller and walking with a few
active kids can help burn the calories off...

Good for you on the exercising, Nanner!  I started at Curves myself, and
after a year moved on to the YMCA because I work for them and get a free
membership.  The convenience, simplicity, support, and non-intimidation
factors are what make a place like Curves good for beginners, imo.  If you
do it consistently and push yourself hard, maybe soon you'll be ready for
things like aerobics classes.  Some of them don't suck.

YMCA here has been mobbed lately.  I don't want to go, when I have to wait
to use the machines.

Has the YMCA where you work been crowded lately?

I work for the YMCA, but not physically _at_ the YMCA.  I usually go in the
middle of the day which isn't a busy time there anyway, and it doesn't seem
to be any busier.

Where I live they're all crowded in Jan, Feb and March as people try to keep
their New Years resolutions to lose weight.  By April most have given up and
the crowds vanish.

No - i have 2 young kids that have to come with me and I don't have a
trailer for the bike, and it's also butt cold out.

Good for you!

I exercised yesterday too! Finally had my elliptical put together and
ready to go.

Boy were the people here right - 15 mins was enough for me ;p

I'm going to go for 15 mins a day for a week then try to do 30 mins
the next week and see if I can manage it

How about 15 mins a day for a week, then perhaps do 15 minutes in the
morning and 10 in the evening (or some other pattern that works best for
you), or just add 5 mintues for 20 mins once once day.  Don't ramp it too
fast too soon.  You'll have plenty of time for marathon stuff later. :)

The trick is to "glide" into exercise without any ill effects.

Thanks Roger, I appreciate your input. I was thinking of splitting it
up like that through the day when I ramp it up a bit.

When I get to the point of being able to do an hour a day I have NO
plans of doing it all at once ;p Doing 15 minutes in the morning and
then working up to 15 minutes in the afternoon (and then maybe upping
each one individually by 5 minutes at a time per week) will get me
into the practice of doing it that way.

Good for you! That sounds a very civilised setup.

My baby is 10 1/2 - been a long time since I needed a playroom, and they
certainly weren't common then : )  I could do with one now, but we're
currently having an argument about whether or not she's old enough to watch
a 12-rated movie : )

Wouldn't that totally depend on the child and the movie?  Assuming it's the
equivalent of PG13.
