help with induction

LilGeekGirl - 11 Feb 2005 14:36 GMT
Hi everyone,

Just starting induction.

I am cooking for 5 children (ages 1, 11, 12, 13, & 15) and myself  (hubby
left for Iraq last month).  I took some pictures to send him and competely
freaked with how big I look.  I flux daily between 148-151# and am 5'6", 34
yrs old.

I want to look and feel better (tired all the time now.. but that could be
the kids too:-)  I just starting using my treadmill again, and will do 2-4
miles a day on that (love to run... just can't easily with baby unless its
on the treadmill)

My first question is that I need induction recipes that are easy,
inexpensive, and child friendly.  I do not mind making them extra things
etc.

I like using the crockpot, and with sports etc. also need some QUICK AND
EASY recipes so that we don't head for subway or McD's.

Next question, I am going out to eat with a bunch of the other wives on Sat.
and need to know what I can order - we are going to a Ruby
Tuesday/TGIFridays type place.

Please let me know if you have suggestions!

Thanks!

is a great place to start.................
if you believe you need to add a starch to what the kids eat, do
so..................just don't eat it yourself.

Which makes you at BMI 24, according to

You know, I am not sure why you feel tired all the time (with 5 kids
and the spouse in Iraq, I would feel tired too!), but I highly doubt
that your weight is the culprit.

Cheap meat of all kinds can be cooked in a crockpot or an oven easily.
Eggs are also pretty cheap.

I am quite unconvinced that drastic measures such as "induction", etc,
are really appropriate at your normal weight. You may be rocking the
boat that is not worth rocking, going onto a lifetime of diets whereas
all that you need, likely, is to eat slightly less. You'd probably do
very well if you skip all desserts from now on, lost 5-10 lbs, and
stay at this weight.

Thanks for the advice...

However, I do know that I am about 20 lb overweight.   When I put on extra
weight, I always feel tired, edgy, etc.
I also know that I just don't look good to myself, so part might be a little
bit of depression from feeling heavy.

In the past I have always been able to lose what I want to lose by simply
running but this seems to be getting harder to do.  Also, running is much
more difficult when I am feeling heavier.  Therefore, I wanted to
"kickstart" my weight loss so I can run easier etc.

My measurements right now are WAY too big for me normally.

chest:    39"
waist:     34.5"
hips:      37"

So time for a change!

Thanks!

Do you plan on low carbing forever? Or what is your plan? Go on
induction, lose a few lbs, and then do something else? Some of the
weight lost duing induction comes back quite quickly if you go off
your diet. I would not call that part kickstarting, it is more like
borrowing.

I think that it is much saner, in your situation, to simply eat a
little less, skip sweets etc, but, obviously, it is all up to you etc.

i think you'd be better off doing some weight training rather than
trying to kickstart weight loss.

kickstart your metabolism instead.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope this is quoting right, this is the first time I have tried to
post through google.

Anyway, I think with those measurements, you might want to think about
eating a lower carb diet long term, not just for weight loss because it
sounds as if you are carrying a lot of weight in your abdominal area
which is unhealthy.

As for cheap & easy induction foods, here are a few ideas:

1. Pot Roast in the crockpot, make it as usual, but just don't eat the
potatoes or leave them out and serve a starch on the side if the kids
like it.

2. Meatloaf -- instead of bread crumbs grind up veggies and mushrooms
in the food processor and use them as binder since it is mainly the egg
that makes it stick together.

3. Tacos & burritos -- tortillas for the kids and lettuce leaves for
you.

4. Most kids love sketti & meatballs -- theirs on noodles, yours on
green beans or broccoli.

4. Do your kids like salad? I worked a lot when my son was little and
his favorite take out was when I would let him make his own salad at
the grocery store salad bar. Bagged salad is a huge timesaver and it
can be the base for a lot of quick healthy meals. I buy the big tubs of
mixed greens from costco and a plate of salad topped with meat or
hardboiled eggs and oil is fiber, fat and protein all in one quick,
easy and yummy meal.

As for eating out -- some variation of the basic grilled meat or fish,
salad & steamed veggies can be found almost anywhere.

Remember, a healthy low-carb diet is really pretty simple -- avoid
starches and replace empty calories from refined sugars and grains with
veggies.

Did everyone think that I was just planning on doing induction and that's
it???!!!

I just understood all the comments.  OF COURSE i am changing to a low carb
overall menu plan... just have to figure out what to make for the induction
period with all these kids eating too!!!

I have 3 cookbooks for making GREAT meals after this period.  Just can't
figure out a menu plan for the first 2-3 weeks.

Since induction last only 2 weeks, think simply meals that consist of
baked/broiled/grilled meat, chicken, fish, eggs, and simple veggies
(brocolli, cauliflower, spinach, celery, lettuce, salad, etc).  Add in the
recommended amounts of hard cheese for some variety, if you wish.  Try not
to think in terms of recipes or meal plans, just eat simple, basic meals.
the extra stuff you make - the carbier stuff - will do fine for the kids.
basic for you, basic+carby stuff for kids.

> Did everyone think that I was just planning on doing induction and that's

Low carb is a way of eating. It appears from your post that you wanted
to "kick start" weightloss. Given that you are only 20lbs overweight, it was
suggested you make a few lifestyle changes and you'll probably do fine. Is
it your intention to do this for a lifetime? Or are you just wanting to take
off 20lbs?

> I just understood all the comments.  OF COURSE i am changing to a low carb

Actually, Robyn gave some great ideas for altering regular meals to low
carb for you. The point is to reduce all the high refined starches and
sugars. The degree that you want to do this is up to you. If you're only
wanting to lose 20lbs, you don't have to be so drastic.
Either cook meals with your kids in mind, and you don't eat the starches.
Or you cook for your self, and then add starches for the little guys. It's
really that easy. Fancy recipes are not needed.

> I have 3 cookbooks for making GREAT meals after this period.  Just can't
> figure out a menu plan for the first 2-3 weeks.

Think meat and vegetables. That is what you are allowed to eat on
Induction, if that is what you want to do. You can also use Google to find
recipes that have been posted before.

> man.. judged guilty w/o any prior knowledge.
> -lilgeekgirl

Please understand that there are a lot of people that are new to low carb
that basically want as much info as possible, and want to lose 20lbs in less
than a month. Many of us are eating this way everyday, even though we have
already reached goal. It's a lifestyle of eating and exercise.
Would you spend an hour of your time gathering recipes when you didn't
know if the poster wanted to seriously do a diet the proper way?

She is not even 20 lbs overweight. She is not overweight at all
according to the BMI chart. She wants to lose 20 lbs from her current

The lady is looking for a few good recipes Jaime. Maybe you can take over
from here. Since I didn't see any problems with the advice given, maybe some
positive ideas from your experiences may be what she is looking for.

Just cook as you normally do, but do NOT eat any of the carbo foods.  Make a
little extra meat per meal for yourself.

## Aside from dieting take the kids out and WALK!  Parks and Zoos come to
mind.  When my son was small we walked sometimes all day in Central Park or
the Bronx Zoo.   Kids give us excellent excuses to get out there and
exercise.  :-)  You *MAY*  lose a few pounds that way.

You can't go wrong with chicken or beef vegetable soup, especially in
the winter.  Add whatever acceptable vegetables you like.  Even with a
lot of vegetables in it, one cup of soup will usually only have 4-7
carbs.  With 5 kids to feed, cooking in bulk is a GREAT idea!

I am curious, how hard is it to be at 10% bodyfat, for you. Do you
experience any struggles, difficulties, cravings, hunger, do you need
to exercise your willpower to hold on to your results,  etc. I am
at around 15% and feel that going any further would make my life
majorly difficult, whereas, now, pretty much everything is on
autopilot. I am curious if your experience is different in that
respect.

If you recall, I'm using the CKD.  During the week while I'm working, I go
low carb and fairly low calorie. This suits me because my mind is not on
eating or hunger when I'm working. Friday night and Saturday is pretty much
low fat and middling calories. Sunday is low carb and higher calories, for
the most part.

The short answer is that I'm not struggling too much. I feel that if I tried
to go lower, it would be quite an effort.

Anyone with good human intentions teaches a dog not to bite. A child not

The poor soul plays the same " You fat " record over and over. And it does
