Laureen - 11 Feb 2005 16:23 GMT Down another 2 pounds for a nice even #20 in 10 days. He told me "If you can puree it and suck it through a straw, you own it but use common sense.... cream soups like chowder, gravy, alfredo sauce milkshakes are not included. Watching your carbs, fat, and calories with net you greater loss. Walk walk walk 25 minutes each day"
When I told him I took no medicine since 2 days post op he told me. "I knew you wouldn't, you're not a whiner, and you're a damn tough girl. He told me I was "textbook", doing so well he didnt want to see me for 3 months and expected the 22% weight loss so he wants to be to weigh 300 to 310 when I come back mid May.
He saw my joy and enthusiasm and told me "You're going to love getting thin and healthy" If he only knew the freedom and liberation I feel!!!! Laureen 410 hi/ 398 preop/378

It's nice that things are going so well. Enjoy! :-)
Take care, Carmen PS I'm still going to suggest that you take Larry and the squirt with you on walks. Getting exercise as a family is a good way to spend time together and emphasize a healthy lifetsyle for the shortstack.

There is no margin for error or screw ups. I get out and walk. I eat my 1/4 of food, remembering protein first 4 times day and drink drink drink too. The food issue is incredibly simple right now. I will really face my demons when I return to regular food and the dramatically reduced protions. One thing right now is I no longer experience hunger. When my pouch matures more and holds a tad more food I will then experience hunger. This 3 monthperiod right now is my window of opportunity to lose the bulk of my weight. The doc told me yesterday " You willl never lose 20lbs in 10 days again, you can expect to lose 80+ pounds during the next three months but then it will slow down remarkably. In other words "You will never lose the weight as fast as you did the first 3 months and 10 days again" Use this time wisely and when you get back to regular food be careful and you will succeed. He told me my total winow of opportunity is 15 to 18 months. He said the general rule by statistics is that whatever I lose during the 15 to 18 month time is what I will lose and I wont lose anymore. I can excelerate my lose by my low carb, low fat, low cal choices and lots of exercise. Either way.... I chose this road, was given this wonderful tool for weightloss and I am going to make the most of it.
:) Laureen

Laureen - 11 Feb 2005 22:20 GMT I took my first long walk on the waterfront trail today. I have been doing little one block things near my house. I told myself walk to the first lightpole. it took me 10 minutes to get to it from my truck and 10 minutes back. I almost made the 25 minute walk the doc told me to do. I was ok. For the first time again in a long time I walked and had NO back pain. I will go farther each day. The trail is a mile round trip. I think I did a fraction of it, but be it told, I'm not a walker so this was a grand accomplishment for me!!!!
No I am not hungry at all. I was beginning to feel weak as of yesterday. I walked all over Best Buy in Seattle and got shaky and tired but since I saw the doctor yesterday at 4:30pm I had 1/2 can atkins shake for dinner, I had 1/4 cup of cooked cream of wheat with splenda this am, for lunch today I had Hood Carb Countdown strawberry yogurt for lunch thinned down with water and I could eat the 6 ounces since it was thin. My pouch empties quickly. Dinner is a 1/4 cup of pureed split pea with ham soup. I will have gotten plenty of protein today. I drink mega water and tea. I eat 2 Flintstones vitamins and 2 Tums each day too Laureen

Laureen - 11 Feb 2005 23:05 GMT Awwww thanks Carmen!!! Your so kind. I feel great as far as emotions and the head thing. Head hunger will set in but thats it its all in the head. I can ruin my pouch by eating anything other than pureed so I dont think its going to happen (me giving in) the real battle starts when the real food can be consummed. I think I can deal with those demons. In the meantime I will walk, drink water, take my vitamins, and eat my 4 protein rich meals per day. LOL Oh BTW, I am rejoining Curves Tues to work out 3 times a week. Ya think the fat will melt off fast enough then? LOL!!! Laureen

Laureen - 12 Feb 2005 00:43 GMT OMG, Best Buy was one place, I walked all over the hospital to get to the medical tower, I wandered through each an every isle of a cool grocery store called "The Whole Foods Market", I went through Walgreens, perused through a plant pot shop called Half Price Pots. I was dog tired last night <grin> Larry bought a talking pedometer and it is screwy. He mapped out 2 miles one night in the car, then went and walked him and the darn thing shorted him like 1/2 mile. Maybe he wore it wrong?
Nicky - 12 Feb 2005 10:06 GMT > OMG, Best Buy was one place, I walked all over the hospital to get to > the medical tower, I wandered through each an every isle of a cool [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > miles one night in the car, then went and walked him and the darn thing > shorted him like 1/2 mile. Maybe he wore it wrong? Has he put his stride length in to it properly? If not, it can't measure miles accurately. Even then, you sometimes need to walk a measured distance and fiddle with the settings until it comes out the same measurement. Counting steps is easier, because it doesn't matter how long your step is then - and you could both use the same ped. I do the 10,000 steps a day, but I think you'd be some months off that - you just need to find out what you're doing now, and increase it as you feel able. (If Larry's ped has been sitting in the store for a while, it might need a new battery too.)

Just curious, how much protein do they suggest you aim for in a day? Or are macro-nutrient goals even a part of your plan at this stage?
Sorry if you've already covered this area, but I haven't been able to read all of your post on the subject.

Write a daily letter to yourself, so when the hard times come, you can go back and gain inspiration from your own words.

Then I have an assignment for you!
On the top of four of those pages, write these questions... one page each. Then answer them! Fill the whole page.

How was my life disrupted because of my weight?
What do I need to do to succeed on this new path?
How do I want my life to change in the coming year?
How can each of the people in my life help me in this new adventure? (Then TELL them how!!!)

tia - 12 Feb 2005 06:15 GMT so laureen, what are you going to do about the piles and piles of loose skin after the surgery? while i realize thats hardly a concern when your health was compromised by the weight, but eventually its going to suck. im about 10lbs away from the century club and i did it with lc mostly. im starting to notice that while i might look ok in clothes (especially since im down to a 16 from a size 30) out of clothes is another matter... are you going to get the body lift thing done?
Laureen - 12 Feb 2005 15:44 GMT Well like I posted the other day. The surgeon says if you have stretch marks you have to hae a tummy tuck. if you dont have stretch marks you dont. I have only a few tiny ones so I dont know what will become of me. If it poses a problem then I will get it taken care of. There is a plastic surgeon here in the PNW who does a full body lift for about 21,000.00
tia - 12 Feb 2005 15:55 GMT i saw a special on discovery health channel that says the full body lift is for younger patients as its veryyyyy invasive and pretty hard on the body. some of the oldest patients they said were in their late 20s and in fantastic physical shape, good hearts, no other complications or problems. while money bought you a new lease on life, it might not buy you everything. however, its always better to have it than not to, right?
sorry if you posted this the other day. i am used to using agent newsreader, and this google thing makes life hard. even though i check threads it still says there are new messages, etc... i havent had time to play with it, so sorry about that.
i guess im stuck. i'm an artist and soon to be art teacher, my husband is still in school and probably going into teaching as well. i highly doubt ill ever have that kind of money to fix the skin thing. let me know how bad it gets for you. i seem to be deflating. my friend is only 1 size smaller than me and she looks great. i just look like somebody let the air out of the tire around my stomach. i guess itll never change. anyway, good luck to you.

Laureen - 12 Feb 2005 17:32 GMT yep. Any respectable surgeon will not do surgery on fresh weight loss. Your inner fat needs time to adjust too. Also it is a good idea to wait a year regarding trauma to the body etc.

It really depends. I lost 60 lbs through lowcarbing. For a while, I had loose skin in some places but eventually it caught up with itself, even in place where I had stretch marks. I have subsequently had lipo and a TT, but not because of loose skin. Some of the skin on my inner thighs is retracting a bit slowly, but it's clearly getting better over time.
FWMOIW, I think the stretch mark test isn't always a good indicator. My experience has been that I had good retraction in places where I had stretch marks and less good in places I didn't.

Laureen - 11 Feb 2005 22:21 GMT Aww I just saw her name Saffire and thought of her and am misty eyed. She would be proud of me! She so wanted me to do this!!! She paid for it too LOL!

It strikes a chord with me because when my former mother-in-law, whom I dearly loved, was dying back in 1997, I promised her I WOULD lose weight. Instead, I GAINED another 30 lbs after she died, and I felt bad about breaking that promise. A small part of my happiness and relief at finally getting back into a "normal" weight range is BECAUSE of that promise and knowing that I am finally making good on it and that she WOULD be proud of me. I like to think that she knows about it and is happy for me -- annoyed that it TOOK me so long, maybe, but happy nonetheless :-)

Laureen - 12 Feb 2005 00:47 GMT Well you know my family is pissed at me cuz I got all of Grams stuff right? Well.... We spoke one day since when my aunt stopped by 4 days after Christmas to deliver my daughter a belated Christmas gift. She saw me on you worst dumpiest day when I was stricken in pain and my knee was bonkers. I live in a small town and incredibly sometimes it takes months to run into someone familiar here. I think about the day I run into her and will revel in looking at her face and she tries to take it all in!!! ROFL!!! She wont think I squandered Grams $ now will she? Who cares !!!!!!!!!!
JC Der Koenig - 12 Feb 2005 02:10 GMT You mean he recommended eating less and exercising more?

> You mean he recommended eating less and exercising more? The difference is he gave her the tool to ensure the former which will make doing the latter easier and presumably more likely. Way back when I consulted for the surgery. Low carb was my last stop prior to giving it the most serious consideration. I lucked out. Laureen didn't.
Take care, Carmen

It's a good thing that core-curriculum teachers are rated mainly on quantitative results, at least in the state of Texas.

tia - 13 Feb 2005 03:06 GMT >>I saw somewhere that you don't know if you're going to be left with a spare skin problem until you'd been maintaining for a year - because it can take that long for the skin to shrink as much as it's going to. So there's still hope : )
woot! there is still hope then. not like it matters lol... saving up the 20 grand for surgery isnt going to happen over night. although, even if i had it, i wonder if i would... hm... food for thought.

I recently got back in touch with a high school buddy who'd always struggled with his weight, and he's also recovering very nicely from bariatric surgery done mid-December.
