Don't say that unless you mean it!

Since discovering a few years ago how inexpensive and wonderful traveling by
Amtrak is, I've traveled all over the U.S. -- *except* for the American
NorthWest, because until now I had no destination there.  I've been across
the South from North Carolina to Louisiana, southwest through Texas and
Arizona to California.  I've travelled the Rocky mountains through New
Mexico and Colorado; the Great Plains through Kansas; the Mississippi Valley
through Misourri, Iowa and Illinois; the MidWest through Indiana and Ohio;
and the Appalachians through West Virginia and Virginia.  I've been from
Virginia through the Northeast megalopolis including Washington,
Philadelphia and New York City to  New England , and I've been through the
Southern states to Florida a couple of times (I just got back a few days ago
from a business trip to Orlando on Amtrak).  I have
photojournals/travelogues of my Key Largo and California trips on my
website.

Now you may have given me a reason to see the quadrant of the U.S. that I
haven't been to yet --  the Northern Plains, Northern Rockies and the
Pacific Northwest.  I'm salivating at the prospect!  I just checked the
train routes and I could take an awesome trip from here in Williamsburg, VA
(the Amtrak station is a few blocks from my home) to Chicago, North through
Wisconsin and Minnesota, then along the U.S./Canadian border through North
Dakota and Montana, Washington state to Vancouver, BC.  Amtrak has a special
ferry service that runs from the Vancouver station to the Victoria station
at the pier, which is where I would get off.  Sounds like it it would make
an awesome autumn vacation if I timed it when the leaves are changing.  It
would be about 3- 1/2 days of glorious train travel each way.

I already have my vacation planned for this year; I'm going back to Key
Largo for two weeks this May.  But next year ... hey, who knows ...?

Peter, I AM SERIOUS. But could you promise me something? Dont driver
here! No more car wrecks! We could pick you up in Seattle from AMtrak
or you could go to BC and get on the ferry and we will pick you up on
our side downtown here at the ferry terminal. In the rainforests are
the Roosevelt Elk. So cool!!!!!! There is Hurrican Ridge too. It is a
stunning viewpoint for the Olympic Mountains too.It has a very old
rustic ski lodge and BTW it wasnt used this year as there was only a
dusting of snow in the mountains this year. We are worried about this
summers water supply.
You just let me know. I dont work so visitors anytime is real easy for
this girl.

sir, amtrak is cheap because they crash... a lot.  its kinda funny, on
a train you just gotta make sure you dont hit anything in front of you
-- you'd think it would be safe.   after the zillion of news reports in
the past few years about amtrak trains, i thought they were out of
business.  good luck tho...  i wont fly either, so maybe listening to
me is a bad idea.

Do you really think that rail travel is inexpensive because "they crash?!"
If that's the case, cars should cost $1.50 brand new and gas to put in them
should be $ .01/gallon.  Travel by automobile is statistically exponentially
more dangerous than either flying or train. Do you drive or ride in cars?
The fear is a bit irrational.

I imagine there are people who won't go on a boat after seeing "Titanic,"
and I personally know those who won't ride elevators or drive through
tunnels or over bridges for fear of dying.  Yet they'll all die eventually
from something.  Hmmm, now that I think about it, Richie Valenz (singer:
"La Bamba" and "Oh Donna") had a mortal fear of flying; he finally overcame
his fear to fly East to appear on American Bandstand and was killed when his
plane crashed in a snowstorm!

But cars crash.  Planes fall.  Boats sink. Trains derail.  Dr. Atkins split
his head open and died while out walking!  What are we to do, sit at home
behind closed doors and miss out on life for fear of what might happen?
Interestingly though, this is exactly what famed sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov
did.  He had a mortal fear of flying and most means of mechanical travel; he
lived his life in New York City and for a long time would only go to where
he could walk -- even though he primarily wrote fantasies about traveling to
other worlds!  Eventually he overcame some of his fears of transportaion,
but would still only travel by train and then later in his life when he
overcame his fear of automobiles.

Trains are very safe.  To emphasize the point, seat belts are required on
cars and airplanes but there are none on trains because they are not needed.
It's an incredibly comfortable and relaxing means of travel.  But hey, if
there are those who fear the rails, more room for me!
:-)

> Do you really think that rail travel is inexpensive because "they crash?!"

yes i do lol... amtrak has a pretty bad reputation from what ive heard, but
who knows.  i guess im going on the news reports where 2 or 3 crashed in one
month and right from the get go i just wrote them off as a company i wouldnt
travel with.

yes i do drive, but in cars i have more control.  i can react to other
people driving, especially if theyre about to hit me and get out of the way.
its a trust issue, honestly... statistically planes/trains etc crash less
but when they do its oftentimes fatal (with planes anyway).  how many people
do you know that have walked away from an accident, or atleast been alive
when the pins set?  crashing isnt my fear, its dying lol....

> I imagine there are people who won't go on a boat after seeing "Titanic,"

oh how true, how true.  i think the fear is from being cut short from life,
like expecting to live long especially with preventative measures
(diet/exercize, vitamins, yoga, whatever) and then being cut down because a
plane fell out of the sky or some amtrak dude was smoking pot... thats
devestating to me.

Hmmm, now that I think about it, Richie Valenz (singer:

oh i agree we're all going to die from something lol... i know i have
issues!  i still wont fly until its absolutely necessary.  control freak ---
RIGHT HERE! lol...yanno whats odd is i have no fear of the subway.  now that
IS scary.

Peter, enjoy your trips while you can. I think I just read something about
our administration wanting to de-fund Amtrak, with the opinion rendered that
they'd likely head directly into bankruptcy. Meaning reorganization would
probably result in elimination of a lot of the less popular routes. I'd
imagine fares would go up, too.

I have read with interest some of your accounts of your train travels, and
am hoping to do something similar in a year or two. I'm just hoping Amtrak
won't be too disrupted by then. It just sounds so relaxing.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if the gov't stops the
subsidy.    Personally, I think that Amtrak would then be forced to run like
a *real* business and service would improve.   From experience I know that
the trains are often full; it's certainly not from lack of use that's causes
the financial problems.  Most of the problems that I've observed are due to
mismanagement as well as pork barrel politics and greedy labor union
featherbedding.

One striking thing you discover about traveling extensively on Amtrak is
the huge variance in quality of the stations, since each Amtrak Station is
built and/or maintained by the locality it is in.  Charlotte NC, for
instance is a beautiful modern city, yet has one of the most embarrassing,
crappiest, run-down train stations.  As does Kissimmee Fl, which is a major
family destination (Kissimmee's is worse because it is also filthy rotten
dirty).  Yet there are many places like the small town of Rocky Mount, NC
which has one of the grand old stations that is completely restored and has
a majestic beauty, much as the San Bernadino CA station.  Many
cities/commutites take great pride in their Amtrak stations since they know
that this may be a visitor's first impression of their community.  The Del
Rio Texas, Charlottesville VA and the Albuqurque NM stops are great examples
of wonderful stations --  as is the station right here in my own city --
Williamsburg Virginia, which has a beautifully restored historical
transportation center.  Some stations are downright dangerous, dimly lit and
in terrible neighborhoods while others are the centerpiece of the city.
IMO, Amtrak will never be successful in attracting the general public until
these things are standardized, much as Marriott, MacDonalds and other solid
companies have standardized their operations from location to location.

There are virtually no transportation systems in the U.S. that survive
without public funds.  Federal, State and Local governments build the
airports and highways, pave the runways and roads, fund the air traffic
control and bolster major airlines as they fail from the increasing weight
of the labor unions.  Ad infinitum, ad nauseum ...

Interesting observations, Peter. You're probably quite right. In fact, I'm
sure you are.

I haven't ridden Amtrak much, just up and down the southern California coast
a bit and I rode the Metrolink commuter train regularly between Orange
County and downtown Los Angeles, to avoid the rush hour gridlock.

Where I am now I like to ride down the NE corridor to DC and that's about
all I've done. Certainly trains have been pretty much full here, as they
were in CA, but I wondered about the area in between. So that's great to
hear. I agree, there is so much difference in stations. Our little one here
in Wilmington is pretty utilitarian, but clean and convenient. And of course
the DC station is fabulous. My all time favorite is the Los Angeles station.
I used to go there just to gawk, long before I ever rode a train. I hope you
got there when you were in CA. I regret that I never saw the San Bernardino
station, I'll have to try to catch that some time when I'm on the west
coast.

Well, I guess I won't cancel my future travel plans then. Just hope the
trains all keep running and maybe even improve.

Not to go on about the subject, but I agree about Union Station in D.C.;
it's my favorite train station in the country.  I've was fortunate a few
months ago to have a stopover there for a few hours, and spent some time
browsing the mall, restaurants and shops at the station.   It reminds me of
Grand Union Station in Chicago, although D.C. is much more organized and
easy to get around in.

are you having any problems with the syndromes?  i read somewhere if you eat
too much food will get stuck in the esophagus, as well as some dumping
syndrome from sugars or what not?  you mentioned the dystal and proximal
procedures (forget which you had and im too lazy to scroll up :) and do
those procedures make a difference with the syndromes folks get from wls?

just an fyi, the change is amazing.  i can hardly believe you did it in such
a short amount of time.

I am sensitve to large amounts of fat and sugar. The surgeon also
bypassed about 2 feet of my small intestine. (the part that processes
the fats and sugar) If I eat sugar or high fats, there is a possibiltiy
I can dump, ya vomit, get sweaty, feel ill, tired, stomach ache. To
hell with that. I am on the straight and narrow. The doc told me the
people who pay themselves ALWAYS do better. I paid $14,410.00 for my
freedom I doubt I will f.ck it up.

If you dont chew it all food can get stuck in anyone esophagus. If
food is not chewed properly it can sit in the pouch funny and block the
new dime sized stoma at the bottom of the pouch, then you can throw up
til it is displaced. Small bites, chewed well, eaten slowly but not too
slow will make for no problems. Ya gotta follow the rules here for
successs. I'm willing...................................

Thank you for the compliment. I do see the bloat has diminshed in my
face all ready. My eyes are so much bigger.
Laureen
tia - 13 Feb 2005 05:25 GMT
i keep thinking about all that you went through.  were you scared a little
bit going in?  i realize the alternative, but were you this gung ho moments
before you were in that scary rolly bed?  i know i was in a panic before my
emergency surgery last year (gallbladder...f.ck you weightwatchers) and one
of the nurses that was nice to me switched patients so i would feel better
that she was in there.  god was i ever scared.  the sore throat was worse
than the laproscopic procedure tho.. the only thing that hurts the worst is
the stupid bill i got stuck with.  i didnt have insurance, so im practically
20k in debt from now until eternity... damn those doctors get paid well.. i
chose the wrong career field.  youre never worth millions in art until youre
dead.. even then its not guarenteed ;/
