I thought Catholics didn't have to give up meat on Fridays anymore.

What about going vegetarian or stopping at one of those seafood buffets or
even a Chinese restaurant? Most oriental food bars have both vegetarian and
seafood choices. Just about every place has a salad bar these days and some
of the fast food fish places are now offering non breaded fish and shrimp.

They don't.  And they never had to eat fish.  Vegies are fine.  Plus
people with health issues are exempt.  One can always "fast" in another
way, like no trashy novels or getting up an hour early or the like.

You could carry a can or two of tuna, along with some packets of mayo
and/or mustard.  Mix up your own tuna salad. :)  I have seen tuna lunch
kits that come w/ all of that, but it includes crackers too, and is
quite pricey.

By fasting, you body goes into starvation mode, and stores fat instead of
burning it.  Talk about a whole new level of stupid.

Fasting for a day? um.....no
JC Der Koenig - 13 Feb 2005 14:42 GMT
How is your body going to store fat if you're not taking any in?

The second sentence is a commentary on the first sentence.

fasting for a day isnt nearly enough to get out of stasis... regardless of
what your body's doing, it doesnt wanna change.  people always talk about
this stupid starvation mode bs.  they seem to think 'uhoh once im in
starvation mode ill never lose weight'... untrue.  you WILL stall for
awhile.. but you WILL lose weight when you dont eat.  try it :)

Why? You can eat fish. Vatican II allows for substitutions. You could
give up something else on Fridays. How about giving up eating meat on
Fridays?

i never understood why fish didnt count as meat... they still had to
die didnt they? lol.. well i guess im not the greatest catholic.  not
only do i not give up meat on fridays, i barely remember that it was
even friday to begin with... oh well.  hope god forgives the forgetful
and all that.  good luck mate... not eating on fridays would make me
hate fridays under normal circumstances.

I asked my mom this when I was a kid. She said we gave up meat back then
because it was a treat and fish was an every day food. This does make sence.
Being lent is a fast to honor everything Jesus went through in the weeks
leading up to Easter (it's kind of our walk with the cross). If this is
true, then now we should give up fish and pizza . I don't know about the
other Catholics here, but as a child I loved Fridays during lent because we
always went out for pizza or had Red Lobster.
