splenda (sucralose) itching

jason@cyberpine.com - 16 Feb 2005 07:01 GMT I lost about 70 lbs by cutting out starches for lunch and at dinner and replacing my morning corn flakes and nightly ice create with carb smart(with splenda) products.
Around 3 months ago while into heavy splenda use, I started developing severe iching all over my body - mostly on my back and chest. Around the same time I had also gained about 10 lbs as I started to relax the diet a bit.
I stopped eating splenda products about 3 weeks ago, but continue to have itching.
I read somewhere that the itching might be a symptom of liver damage caused by toxins produced in my body by splenda.
I don't mean to scare anybody with presumptions.. I'm no doctor and actually I should go to one to get a professional opinion.
Any help or information is appreciated.
tia - 16 Feb 2005 07:32 GMT well, yea seeing a doctor is a pretty big priority - especially if youre thinking you could have some liver damage. dont mess with your organs, get that checked pronto if you can. food allergies can happen to anyone at any time. im not sure if thats what it is, but it sure sounds like one. another thing i can think of is that splenda is made by adding chlorine to sugar. the byproduct is splenda. you might be sensitive to that? either way, get yourself checked, you dont want cirrhosis or something. good luck.

Forget all the goofy "toxin" theories and have yourself checked by a dermatologist. In the meantime moisturize after you shower and get a humidifier. Winter months mean indoor heating and dry skin. Dry skin can be itchy and scratching can lead to breaks in the skin. Those act as "Welcome" signs for bacteria and viruses.

If a post sets off my radar I look at it more closely, but there are only two people I'm actively scanning for right now. :-)
I'm much worse with the folks who insist on forwarding me every stupid chain email that hits their inbox. The overwhelming majority of the time they're hoaxes, but you might be surprised how people react when you email them back and prove it to 'em. Just this morning some idiot from Fort Benning got all huffy with me when I emailed him the truth and suggested he email the refutation out to everybody he sent the chain email to. All of a sudden it's too much trouble to hit the forward button. (The chain email in question was supposed to have been written by General Richard Hawley - a sort of "kill 'em all" hyper conservative rant - but was actually written by comedian Larry Miller making fun of that POV.)

FOB - 16 Feb 2005 16:36 GMT I'm forever doing that, too, I can't count the number of times I have refuted the one about bringing Congresspersons into the Social Security System both in email and on newsgroups. I don't think I have ever received a chain email that was true.

We at XYZ Industries have rented an e-mail tracker and will be using it for the next three months. We cannot help it. Someone made us do it and now we have to send this out. We have no control anymore. We are still recovering.
Forward this e-mail immediately to everyone you know and you will receive $156. Even though you haven't given anyone your name or address in the process of forwarding the e-mail. $156 will nevertheless come to you. The people you send this e-mail to will get $178. Yes, that's right, they get more than you do. Why? What do you care? Who are you to tell us who we should give money to? They probably hit FORWARD more often than you did. What is that your business? Stop asking questions. Forward more copies of this message.
An e-mail tracker is an extremely sophisticated piece of surveillance equipment, you know. By means of a an algorithm of unfathomable beauty and complexity, our e-mail tracker can track every piece of e-mail you ever have receved, ever have sent, or ever will send.
Forward this e-mail immediately to everyone you know and you will receive enough money to pay off t he U.S. national debt. Whether you fulfill your civic duty by doing so is, of course, entirely up to you.
I too thought this must be a hoax. I said, "Is this a hoax?" right out loud. What we say is important because what the mouth utters repeatedly the soul has attempted without success to conceal. By the way, do you know how much it costs to build an e-mail tracker? Neither do we but we have rented it for three months and if we don't use it we're pretty much cooked. So we FORWARD FORWARD FORWARD FORWARD FORWARD.

If you want, it can involve that person who should have fallen in love with you during your high school years.
Do you now believe in e-mail trackers? You should. People who do not believe in e-mail trackers fail to receive mysterious checks for $156 in the mail. They also experience prolonged periods of sexual inadequacy.
Forward this email immediately to everyone you know and you will approach white light as you hurtle at unimaginable speed through a darkened passageway and feel the swarming of the godhead within your heart. Hannah Gruen - 16 Feb 2005 14:16 GMT > I read somewhere that the itching might be a symptom of liver damage > caused by toxins produced in my body by splenda. Well, Splenda has been rather thoroughly tested prior to approval. In addition, although it's been approved for use in the U.S. for only a few years, it was used in Canada and elsewhere quite a few years before that. There really haven't been many complaints or problems reported for it, that I'm aware of.
Well, other than the bogus stuff from the anti-Sucralose websites that are generally run by people trying to scare you off it so you'll buy their stevia product. I suspect you got some of that bogus scare stuff.
Itching can be caused by all kinds of things, including dry skin plus or minus cold, dry weather. I'd suggest seeing your doctor if it continues.

jason@cyberpine.com - 16 Feb 2005 16:02 GMT I'm convinced there's a connection - just know my body that way. It's kindof a coincidence that so many others would report the itching - doubt they are all on the BIG SUGAR payroll <grin> like me. Also, I think it's healthy to be suspicious when humans claim they haved fooled nature - at least at the onset..
As for the BLOG police in here.. God bless you - you are a neccessary evil. What puzzles me is where you find the energy and drive to care as much as you do. It's all good.

I guess it may depend on how much Splenda or any other sweetener you were actually consuming. Was the article written by the makers of Aspertame? I have read some material on people that have had negative responses to different sweeteners. I don't know if the motivation is to warn people, or get them to switch brands.

I ordinarily have extremely oily skin and hair, but when I started low- carbing that cleared up a lot. Changes in diet will most certainly affect the moisture content of the skin.
You also say that you had just changed your eating pattern. (Or so I assume from the fact that you had gained 10 pounds.) That would seem to me to be a much more likely culprit than a product you'd been using for some time.
In any case, get thee to a dermatologist, please.

I found I had to stop using Splenda as well.
I had started with occasional use, and then having gotten some of the Davinci syrups to flavor my coffee and tea, the usage increased.
I started having very painful skin rashes. As my usage of Splenda had increased gradually, it took me some time to figure out the cause. I went on a "no plastic food" week and the rashes started to heal. So I thought about what had changed in the past few months and realized Splenda had gone from occasional to daily use. I tested Splenda specifically using it 2-3 days in a row, the rash came back.
So, off the Splenda and now hoping that most soft drink manufacturers don't switch... although DH and I have done a major switch to water since the end of December. It's working out much better for both of us.
Pulled my stats from the sig line - didn't want Robo Challenge to pick up on the weight gain. I've been sick, flu turned into pneumonia. My DH lost weight, I haven't exercised for almost 2 weeks and my weight is up. But, I've got to be able to breathe without wheezing and coughing jags before I can start exercising again. This is what can cause me to give up the weight loss effort. Any deviation from 4-6 days of exercise per week and the weight just piles back on. It gets so frustrating!!

Any deviation from 4-6 days of exercise per week and the weight > just piles back on. It gets so frustrating!! Hope you're feeling better, Gayle. That flu is sure going around. I've been exposed, but haven't fallen victim yet. Still, it's most important that you get well, and heavy exercise isn't recommended when you are recovering from pneumonia. Are you using soups? There are a lot of low-carb soup recipes that seem perfect when you're in recovery mode. Broth, meat or poultry, lots of lc veggies including some slivered greens (I particularly like kale in soups). Don't forget the onion and garlic, and for anyone with a cold or sinus issues, a good shake of cayenne. Add some cream for cream soups. Have a Wasa cracker or two with a big bowl.
Somehow eating a lot of soup tends to lower your calorie intake, yet you still feel full. This could be helpful when you're not exercising.
Don't worry, you'll take the pounds off soon. Just take good care of yourself and get well.

jamie - 17 Feb 2005 22:42 GMT > I read somewhere that the itching might be a symptom of liver damage > caused by toxins produced in my body by splenda. Mild liver damage typically presents as digestive disturbances and undue fatigue, and then jaundice.
Itching is more likely to be caused by allergy, dry skin, inadequate rinsing of shower soap or laundry detergent, assorted types of dermatitis, or perhaps hypothyroid.
The word "toxins" implies you got this notion from a quackery-nonsense and/or "cleansing" site, where they love to bandy about the word "toxin" but can never name a single one "cleansed" by their ridiculous regimens or products. This, while naming every vague annoying symptom known to man as caused by these "toxins."
There's a saying in toxicology: "the dose makes the poison." There's enough oxalic acid in 20 pounds of spinach to *kill* an adult, but nobody could eat that much spinach.
There's only a few thousandths of a gram of sucralose in a packet or 2 tsps of Splenda, and even the anti-Splenda scare propaganda only claims that 20 or 30 percent of *that* is absorbed.
