You spit? Or swallow?

So you're cooking dinner for your family. I love to cook. Kids demand
spaghetti, sausages, Italian all the way. Garlic bread and so on. (Later
you make your own burger. But on to the question..)

You're making the pasta. Which you like. A lot.
You're about to test it. You pop one in your mouth and the LC angel in you
says "you did what?" I mean, you gotto test for al dente. What to do!

You spit? Or swallow?

I had to spit. Did not make sense to risk a steady weight loss even if it
was "just one little piece." It sounds weird, since I doubt if it would
have made a difference. But to taste a tiny bit of what I can't have, was
making less sense.

So..  whuzzup with you?

   Best Regards,

That sounds like eating-disordered behavior to me.  One strand of pasta
would not have even the slightest impact on your eating plan.

You're supposed to throw a strand of it on the ceiling, if it sticks, it's
done; or switch to spaghetti squash.

People are strange when it comes to the "low carb" thing.

It's not about what you can or cannot have, it's about how food will affect
you.

I've said this probably a hundred times over, and it still doesn't come
across to a lot of people.

All anyone has to do is be aware of how different foods will affect the
body.  Really, that's what low carb is about.  Eat what you want.  There are
rewards, and there are consequences, depending on what we eat.

When we educate ourselves on how food affects our bodies, we are better able
to control our weight and control our overall health.

become obese?

They are not obese and they will eat what they are given. As you know, it
is a very difficult battle to deal with the commercialism, the habits the
TV and all that. I don't think eating pasta is that bad. And I always cook
fresh foods.

Just because I'm lowcarbing I'm not going to cram protein into them to
make a point. They need to learn by example.

So I cook separate still. But a lot of times we eat together and I get
away with it. They don't notice the lowcarb.

We also watch Foodtv, and Fit TV together, so they know the lifestyle.
It'll all come when it is suppose to.

I woulda spit.   But another way to test spaghetti is to toss it against a
wall.  If it sticks, it's ready.  It is what my mom used to do.

By the time I had even thought of the methods of testing, out of many
years of habit I had it in my mouth.

It's not that bad though. I'm not having any super cravings. I'm having
too much fun with all the new forms of the foods I had always liked.

I get the kid to taste it. He's the one who has to eat it.

i'll give you a real answer instead of attacking you with accusations of
eating disorders and bad parenting (holy crap usenet can be sooo annoying!!)
LOL

I just cut a piece of pasta in half and if I see a bit of a white core
inside, just a bit - I know it is done. For the kids over-done is fine
anyway I just don't want under-done so if there is too much white I keep
cooking.

I just bite a bit off the end of a strand.

Plus I cook only Dreamfields.

Hilarious... and I can relate only because I work in a daycare and end up
bringing in treats for birthdays and such.  I end up making things like
cupcakes, cookies, box brownies, etc.  Nothing like mixing up a batch and
staring at the chocolate, etc, on your hands.  Typically I'd eat it, but I
just can't bring myself to eating, basically, raw sugar... as much as I'd
love to.  It feels strange to wash it down the sink.  Luckily my daughter
happily helps me out.  My favorite line that she uses all the time is that
she's 'never had that before' and 'wants to try it'.  From chocolate chips
to cookies.   Funny.
Thanks for the laugh,
Mark

It may be weird, but it sounds right to me.  I've come so far - I don't
want to jeopardize that.  Besides, I'm a carb addict - who knows if I could
have stopped at one?
