I think I'm allergic to coconut meat. Does that mean that I will be allergic
to coconut milk and oil?

Can I get tested for coconut allergies?

I enjoy the flavor (this means I am hah? lol )  and would like to start
using coconut milk and oil when I cook.

TIA

C'mon, now! Reread what you wrote! allergic is allergic---and, of course you
can be tested. After all, what do doctors who treat allergies do all day
long? They don't go on newsgroups and ask non-doctors, that's for sure....

LOL I know but, that takes money. :o)

I thought maybe someone would pop in with I'm allergic to olives but not
olive oil or something like that. Then I would have the guts to just give it
a try. I know it was silly.

If you're allergic to something you can even get reactions to things that
are in the same family.

I am allergic to pecan trees - but not pecans.  It is because I am allergic
to the pollen the tree produces in the spring when the nuts are growing -
but if you aren't sure about what you are allergic to - definitely go get
tested.  Allergic reactions can kill - so don't take risks.  If the OP knows
they are allergic to cocomuts - how do they know this?  If it was from a
test - wouldn't the allergist have told them what they should stay away
from?

OK then.  I'm allergic to cow's milk, but not to cow's meat.

I would hazard a guess that an allergy to coconut meat rules out coconut
milk, but not necessarily the oil.

LOL Mogget thanks :o)

I'm not allergic to milk, but I do have a lactose intolerance so I never
missed milk on this diet (as in way of eating). We never had milk in the
house as a child because I believe my dad had a lactose intolerance also.

But with coconut I feel like every other rcp that shows up on this NG has
coconut of some kind in it and I Really want to try some of them. I don't
think I have ever had coconut milk or oil and really wonder what they taste
like.

I use a lot of canned Thai Kitchen or Chao Koh 'coconut milk' and love it.
Sometimes I mix it with V8 for a quick rich drink. Coconut milk separates in
the can; the top layer is very creamy and a nice treat by itself, especially
if it's got chilled and made sort of a crust. Sometimes when there's liquid
left in the can I drink it straight.

I've certainly had no allergy problems with the creamy part of the 'coconut
milk' -- very soothing.

Sometimes I notice a little itching in throat/back of nose from the liquid;
the stronger the taste, the more. This happens to me with a lot of
vegetables: V8, underdone eggplant, etc.

I don't like the hard-dried coconut sold in the US as a garnish. Might be a
bit of the itching there. I like Bob's Red Mill coconut flakes, but again
there might be a little itching.

The soft floppy coconut meat in Asian sources was no problem. I assume it
still had all its 'cream' in it, not squeezed out to make 'coconut milk.'

I haven't tried any refined 'coconut oil.' Seems a waste of money, I'd
rather use the whole 'milk'. Look for Thai recipies, and Indian curries. (Re
health 'studies', look at the more recent ones that used iirc
non-hydrogenated coconut oil.)

While allergies do exist, I often suspect that most of those claimed by
individuals are imagined.

OK, I'll bite.  What reaction did you have to coconut meat?  Did you throat
swell shut? Runny nose?  Hives?  Gas?

Cubit first of all read my post I THINK I'm allergic. This is why I was
asking about a TEST. You have this way of demeaning a person when you have
no reason. You don't even know me.

My reaction to coconut is:

I have a hard time swallowing after I have had some, I can still swallow its
just more difficult and I can breath. My mouth gets itchy and I get a
burning feeling in my mouth, throat, and stomach.

I always know when coconut is in something from these reactions.

That sounds like the same thing that happened to DH when he ate cantaloupe.
Penicillin made me break out and itch all over and my ears felt like they
filled up.  Running over careless weeds in a pasture with the truck windows
rolled down made the air feel hot in my nose and I felt like I wasn't
getting any oxygen even though I was still breathing ok.

OMG I'm sorry you had such a bad reaction. That is very scary.

Cubit - 20 Feb 2005 17:15 GMT
That is a scary reaction.  It sounds like the real deal.  If it were me, I
would find a way to make a very very diluted test sample of what I suspected
caused the problem, and try it.

A reaction like that I would expect from something like an industrial
pesticide.

The person that suggested the allergist had a good idea.

I don't think I'll be doing anymore self-testing I'll talk to my NP next
time I see her

I get the same reaction to kiwi.  It started with a little itching in my
throat, but got worse every time I ate it.  Last time was when someone
used a knife to cut up kiwi, then an apple.  I had a piece of the apple
and had a reaction.  I haven't been tested, but I am very careful to not
consume anything that might contain kiwi.

I would try a different source of coconut. Only God knows what else might
have been mixed in with your coconut. The growing, gathering,
transportation, storage and processing of coconut is not high tech.

Thats true it could be something that is always mixed with it in anything I
eat that has coconut, but I really would rather not buy a bag of it to see.
Hey I guess I could give it to my mother-in-law.

Thanks

If the reaction you have to coconut is as you describe above I wouldn't
continue to 'test' by eating it. An allergic reaction can become extremely
serious at any time regardless of how mild it's always been. You'd be much
better off (and safer) seeing an allergist and getting tested.

I haven't self tested it in years. There was only one time that I had
something that I KNEW at the time of eating that it had coconut in it, in
the last five years. That was christmas two years ago, never again.

I'll talk to my Dr. next time I go to see her.

Canned coconut milk has preservatives in it (potassium metabisulfite I
think).  Desiccated coconut may or may not have preservatives as well.  Try
coconut meat from a real coconut as a test (small amount).  You may be
reacting to a preservative and not the coconut itself.

Thanks for the reply but no more self testing for me. I didn't think my
reaction was as bad as some say it is. I'll just talk to my NP :o)
