Does exercise help kidney function for diabetics who have various degrees of
kidney disease?  I'm referring to exercises like basic walking, swimming,
light weightlifting, things like that.  Thanks for any input.

We live in an era where the doctors give diabetics the old food pyramid with
lots of carbs.   I do not expect that the true answer to your question is
known.  However, those with credentials will probably have an authoritative
answer for you.

This is a question for doctors, not NG folks like us. My guess is exercise
has zero effect of kidney disease.

Of course.  I don't know about 'direct' impact to the kidneys, but in
a huge variety of indirect ways it would benefit your kidney function
(blood sugar, weight control, blood pressure, etc. etc. etc.)

See your doctor first

I would hazard *a guess* that it does, to the extent that it helps the
diabetic control blood glucose levels.  Doing so could possbily slow the
progression of the disease.
