I am amazed how the postings to this group have slowed down from a year ago
when low carb dieting was really popular.  Even two or three years ago there
were many more postings per day.  What happened?

Too little useful information
Too little genuine support
Too much flaming

I've seen this happen on many a group I used to enjoy.  The trolls take
over and it just becomes too tiresome to read anymore.  The ol' adage
about the one bad apple is very true, and there's more than one here,
unfortunately...

I have been haunting newsgroups since 1996 and all groups seem to have an
ebb and flow.  People lose interest in a particular group or get busy in
their non-cyber life.  Some get irritated by certain posters and cannot make
themselves simply ignore that person.  Then occasionally a new group of
people will arrive and liven things up.  Some seem to think that it is the
duty of others to entertain and/or educate them.  The best way to get a
group going in the direction you would like is to start discussions on the
subjects you want to see.  Of course, threads will wander off the topic,
that's the way conversations are.  To me newsgroups are more like a
neighborhood bar than anything else.  When you drop in you will likely see a
few regulars and some passers through. There will likely be an obnoxious
drunk or two, some who are willing to lend a sympathic shoulder to cry on,
some who have very good advice to give, some who just are cheery and tell
jokes....

Maybe everyone reached their goal and are living the high life now with
no time for newsgroups. ;-)

And some are getting lots of dates so there is less reason to sit in front
of a computer!

I don't know about everyone else, but I've had the flu. I lost about 7
pounds, though! Still coughing a bit and tire easily--but almost over it!

In my case, I've been in school. I've also been generally more involved
in fitness. Also l/cing is now "just the way I eat" rather than a new
diet I have to put a lot of time and energy into.
diane - 26 Feb 2005 00:46 GMT
I have to agree with you- Its old news now that I've been L"cing for a long
time.

If I'm posting here it means I'm sitting on my butt again- I'm trying to
get away from that, being a web junkie,
It takes time to write a long post- and time to read them. I learn about new
stuff here anyway and will keep popping in and putting in my 2 cents.

Have you been in school learning how to double post?

1. Those it worked for lost the excess fat and left the group.
2. Those it didn't work for left the group and gave up dieting.
3. Those who couldn't hack all the salads, protein and fat left the diet for
more variety.
4. There are those who get off the Internet.....

All NGs have a turnover.

I lost my 50 lbs, am maintaining my weight loss, holding down a job and
getting ready to plant vegetables and flowers in the yard of my new little
(old) house that I moved to last month.  I'm going on 32 years sober, 5
years without a smoke.  Not bad for a 66 year old woman. I still visit this
group once in a while, but stopped posting because I got tired of the abuse.
I can't stand the heat, so I got the hell out of the kitchen.  Support is
nice, but not vital.

congratulations on getting away from the vicious animal abusing ex-neighbours.
Jean Staffen - 26 Feb 2005 03:27 GMT
You remembered!  I'm flattered.  Yes, I'm glad to be away from them.  New
neighbors are all animal lovers.

Sounds like you have your life under control and you're doing really well.
:-)
A friend of mine (clinical psychologist) explained the problems with abuse
encountered on NGs and postings boards like this one.   The obese have a lot
of emotional issues.  That's understandable as I remember the obese friends
I've had over the years.  I know life can be difficult for them.  But
getting online and spreading their venom and verbally abusing others (take
it out on innocent people they don't even know) is only a temporary FIX for
them.  It doesn't get the weight off, get them a normal life, get them
acceptance, get them a partner or a job...   all it does it give them that
temporary "fix" just like the jellyroll or bag of fries gave them in the
real world.   Think how superior they feel for that moment that they attack
someone anonymously!  They feel powerful and in control for that moment in
time.  It's the ONLY power and control they have in their lives.  It's
addictive for them, just like food is.  But tomorrow they need another
"fix"... and so will come back here and just watch for a poster they can
abuse and so get this "fix."

Do you really think your posts are appreciably different in tone or context?
Even worse have you actually written a post with "useful" content other than
the obvious entertainment value of reading these senseless tirades?

$$ Anyone will snap back when provoked.  That's human nature.

$$  What's USEFUL content to one person is not useful content to someone
else.
