Yes, it does get VERY frustrating.
Sadly there is no 'average' number of pounds. How much you'll retain
differs from woman to woman, and from cycle to cycle. For me, it's
typically 6 - 10 kg (13 - 22 pounds) and this was consistent even in
my Low Fat days. Other women average 2 - 3 pounds.
The only way you can tell how YOU will react is to keep track during a
couple of cycles. Sorry to disappoint you, but that's the way it is.
Once you get the hang of it, you might find it better not to weigh
yourself at all between Ovulation (or mid-cycle) and TOM, especially
if you're an 'all or nothing' person who will take the excuse of
seeing no loss to 'comfort eat'.

I used to have that happen - the no loss/ no gain then whoosh the next week.
I loved that - NOW I gain 5 lbs before get depressed & crave EVERYTHING then
it takes a week after to get back to where i was :o(
It got so bad I as quitting each month, binging on crap - then resuming LC
getting back to square 1 in time to start the horror show again.
This has been going on for 6 months. I;d get as low as 138 and as high as
148. I saw this time will be different then I break.
I really hope THIS time IS different - I am so committed and don't know what
to do - I am live Dr Jeckyl & Mrs Hyde-wants-a-donut!

Strangely, I've had absolutely no cravings before my period since going LC.
I still retain a couple of pounds of water, but the overwhelming chocolate
cravings I used to get have completely disappeared. I did start taking
magnesium supplements about the same time I started LC and it's made my
periods almost cramp-free, so I wonder if that might have something to do
with it? I take 250mg/day twice a day.

Wow I must try magnesium. I am hoping to whoosh after this tom. I had just
statred induction Monday, tom on Thursday, grrrr.
Bev-Ann - 27 May 2005 04:31 GMT
I can't guarantee that'll it'll do anything for your cravings, but it sure
helped me with painful cramps. I can sometimes forget I'm having my
period. :-)

IUD's are wonderful to stop pms and cramps. I hardly even get my TOM
now, it's just 2 days of spotting. I love it! Also, no more pills
everyday.

I had the complete opposite reaction to an IUD! More cramping,
bleeding or heavy spotting 3 weeks out of 4. It was miserable. I was
more than glad when we decided to start trying for a family and I
could get the darned thing removed.

Were you using the old kind or the newer ones? I use Mirena and they
say it is improved from the older models.

It was inserted about 13 years ago, so probably an older kind.
I've since had a tubal ligation (pregnancy turned out to be literally
life-threatening for me and I'm not risking it again) so it's pretty
much a moot point now.

I'm not sure. Had the device since 2001.

That's been my experience as well. I have the Mirena IUD that
releases progestin. In fact I was one of the 20% who stopped
having periods for many years. Although now that its been 4
years I will spot on infrequently.
My OB/GYN told me that she has also used the IUD specifically to
treat women with heavy periods. Lately I've read where they are
also considering using it as hormone replacement for menopausal
women because of the low level progesterone release.

That's the kind I use also. I pretty much have nothing monthly and the
mood swings have settled down a lot.

Me too. Wonderful stuff : ) At least on my 3 months' worth of experience.
