taking them by reducing 1/2 tablet every 10 days , however I have
gained weight 3 kg . I have swollen anckles and specially puffy eyes, I
would be more than grateful if any one who had or having diuretic
withdrawal sintoms to share it with me.

There may be a reason you needed them in the first place...

How is your thyroid?
How much salt do you eat?

Quitting them might be dangerous!

I use Torosemide as needed, but I don't take it every day.
I've been using it PRN now for over 10 years. Seems pretty harmless to
me!

thanks for your advice, I have no thyroid problem, I started on
diuretics as a very silly way to lose weight , My endo tells me
continue to include normal salt intake in my diet as he thinks I am too
young to continue having low salt diet for the rest of my life, however
I am going to start taking at least low Na salts, and reduce it
considerably .What makes me really scared is drinking water or any
other liquid as I fill swollen all the time.

There is enough salt in the foods that we eat every day that you don't need
any added salt on any foods.  Drinking water helps me when I start getting
puffy ankles.  Usually that is your body trying to tell you that you are
dehydrated.

Water isn't fat.  If you tried diuretics to make the scale reading go
down, that's something you're going to need to learn on more
than just an intellectual level.

No amount of effort spent fighting water weight will ever have any
impact on the amount of fat you're carrying.  You started to taper
off on diuretics and you retained a bit of water.  You need to step
back and make yourself see that as not important.  It isn't fat,
it isn't a problem.

You've just started tapering off on the abuse of diuretics and
already you've focusing on salt restriction?  That's a very bad sign.
The human body is evolved to eject vast amount of salt.  Do not
worry about salt.  If it tastes really good use it; if not don't.  And
drink plenty of water.  That's all you'll ever really need to do to
deal with salt and water retention.

You're working with an MD on this, right?  Have you also talked
to a specialist who treats eating disorders?  Abusing diuretics,
realizing that's what you've been doing, and immediately diving
into abusing salt as a substitute abuse, that sounds very much
like an eating disorder problem to me.

Now that I think about it, if you've been focusing that hard on
fighting water retention, I doubt that worrying about body fat is a
good idea for you now.  What are your stats?  Current height,
weight, age?  if you've been putting that much effort into fighting
water retention what's the chance you started doing that in the
first place because you're already underweight?

The thing about a diet support group is most folks want to
support people reaching their ideal weight.  That includes if
you're below it gaining just like it includes if you're above it
losing.  Support isn't always about what you want to hear,
especially not if you find suggestions of eating disorders
trigger anything but puzzlement at why I would mention it.

Thanks a lot for your advise, yes indeed I have food disorder problem.
Intelectually i know the weight gain is water not fat but nevertheless
is uncomfortable. I have already put on 3-4 kg, how much more would I
gain, what is the limit . I am 1.62 cm and 70kg. I am 40 years old.
Isn´t it dangerous to gain so much water?

It can spike your blood pressure.

Work with your doctor.
Follow his/her advice.

An exboyfriend of mine prescribed water pills to me for puffiness as well.
I found myself totally hooked on them for years.

Finally, when I became pregnant, I HAD to stop taking them.  A full bottle
still sits in my cabinet nearly 3 years later just waiting to be used.  The
only reason I don't take them is because I am still breastfeeding.

I swelled up so much while pregnant.  So, I feel your pain.

Drink a good 3 liters (I'm just using what I drank when starting to low
carb) of water a day.  Your body will begin to flush itself.

Just try it for a week or so and you should see the difference.

I'm afraid we made a big mistake by taking these highly addicted and deadly
(from what I understand) pills.

Thanks Carol Ann, you just can´t imagine how encoraging it is to me to
see that you have managed to give up these nasty pills , I am reducing
them every 10 days but I am swollen like a ballon , It is about a month
and half since i started to reduce them. I am taking one and half / day
now.

How long did it take for you to start loosing the reflex water gain due
to the lack of diuretics?did you have to restrict your sodium intake?
I know I have to drink water , but I feel scared to do so as I am
already so overhydrated!! I have reduced salt but it is difficult
because the social life here in spain is closely related with food and
celebrations, you know how full of salt are every thing when you eat
out.

When I took them I was taking a 50 mg tablet a day.  I was also taking
potassium.  I assume you are too.

I unfortunatley went cold turkey, just as I did with the cigarettes.  I have
no idea how long it took for the swelling to go down, but I did seem to want
to have it for a good few weeks.  After about 2 - 3 weeks, I just seemed to
stop craving them.

You really SHOULD force yourself to drink at least 3 liters of water.  I
believe there is a ratio that someone suggested here based on your weight.
I don't know what the formula is, but I was told to drink 3 liters a day.
When I do, I notice that with each trip to the bathroom, I feel less and
less swollen.

It's honestly when you don't get enough that your body seems to hold onto
it.  Like a survival mechanism.

It's the same leap of faith you have to make when you low carb.  When I
first started, I kept saying that there is NO way I could lose and be eating
so much.  But, after the first week I was shocked and then the weight kept
coming off for 7 full weeks!

After 7 weeks I was down 20 lbs!  I felt so much better and was off of the
sugar and carbs.

Try doing it for a few weeks and see what happens.  As always, consult a
physician.

That's the advice I have.  I hope it helps!

Of course, I am at 163 now (where I began in March 2002) but have had a
child and have not stayed on the low carb lifestyle.

I am making a go of it again.  I hope to be at my goal weight by September
1st.

Right now, I'm taking it 10 lbs at a time!

It is very valuable your advise to me, my Dr also tells me to drink at
least 2 L of water. Presently I am taking 60mg/ day. I have reduced  it
from 270mg/day!!!
He belives I should have a normal sodium intake and not restrict the
salt , what has been your experience did you stop taking salt?

Morgan is really lovely, you are also very pretty.
best wishes

Thank you for your compliments!  I did not limit my salt intake.  I never
add salt purposely, though.

I am a huge kimchee eater.  It's loaded with salt.

Just follow your docs advice and drink at least 2 liters of water a day and
slowly decrease your mgs of the nasty, nasty, nasty pill.....and I imagine
in a month or so you will feel so much better.

Think of it this way, it's better to get off of them NOW than to continue
taking them.  The swelling will eventually go down and your body will go
back to normal (I hope!).  But taking them can have fatal results.

If you smoke, stop that, too!  LOL!
