jb1677@NoSpam - 02 Mar 2006 18:48 GMT I started atkins on Feb 20th, so I guess I am on day 10. I have been following the book and have had no cheating whatsoever except for a few small pieces of shredded carrot on a salad yesterday.
My average meal for the day has been: Breakfast: 2 Eggs, same every day
Lunch/afternoon snack: One Day - Roast Beef with horseraddish, 1 cup of salad greens with red wine vinegar for dressing or ~1cpu of accptable veggie, 1oz of sharp cheddar and small scoop of chicken salad
Another Day - 2 cups of salad with 8 or so medium shrimp, 2oz sharp cheddar
Another Day - same as roast beef day but with turkey
As an afternoon snack I may have 1oz of cheeze or a few pork rinds (only 2 days), or a few olives (I am an olive addict)
Dinner: One - Broiled chicken breast, 1 cup of green beans, small salad if I have available vegtables (depends on lunch)
Two - Spiced Shrimp and small saladw/cheese (.5 oz) with red wine vinegar, 5 olives
Three - Baked tilapia with olive topping (5 olives total) and green beans
Four - Buffalo Wings (not breaded) and small bowl of chili (meat and seasoning, no beans) with onions and cheese
The only "snack" after dinner I have had was sugar free jello.
All I have been drinking is water, In fact I actually felt guilty when I had a caffene free diet soda the other day!
I have NOT been excercising any more than ususal, I know this is bad but still.
With all of that in 10 days I have basically maintained my weight, + or - 2lbs from day to day (same as before I started).
Any suggestions?
jb1677@NoSpam - 02 Mar 2006 18:54 GMT Forgot to add
- I am taking an Iron free multivitamin - Energy level is up (but could be in my head) - I am sleeping much better (but thats probably due to no caffene) - I feel differernt, not better or worse but there is an overall different daily feeling if that makes any sense.... - I am generally not hungry all the time and I dont really crave things I cant have much
Joe the Aroma - 02 Mar 2006 19:07 GMT > Forgot to add > [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > - I am generally not hungry all the time and I dont really crave things > I cant have much Try checking for ketosis. That'd be the only way to know for sure if you are getting too many carbs or not.
jb1677@NoSpam - 02 Mar 2006 19:17 GMT Are the ketosis test strip things available at grocery stores or drug stores? What are they generally near?
I personally have not been counting carbs but the wife has for the two of us and she is saying that we are averaging ~15 and have not gone over 20.
Thank

Consider: 1)Hang tight on the plan and 2) start a program of daily walking if you are able.

I spent six months at 15g, and I ate almost NOTHING that wasn't meat, romaine lettuce, cheddar cheese, broccoli, etc. Stuff like "chili" and "chicken salad" can have all sorts of interesting things in it.
Watch the salt, caffeine, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, etc.
Good luck.

> Any suggestions? It might just be me but your meals look protein heavy with not enough fat. Try putting them into Fitday to see what your percentages are. http://www.fitday.com Protein is converted to glucose at a rate of about 58% so if you're eating too much you end up with more carbs than you thought. http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm#4p
If you haven't read the FAQ you really should. It's a treasure trove of information. http://www.grossweb.com/asdlc/faq.htm

Hannah Gruen - 03 Mar 2006 12:17 GMT > With all of that in 10 days I have basically maintained my weight, + or > - 2lbs from day to day (same as before I started). > > Any suggestions? Well, over the years this newsgroup has been in existence, we've seen quite a few people who failed to lose, or even gained, while in induction, but who went on to lose substantial amounts of weight because they continued to stick to the program.
The fact is, people don't lose much fat weight in induction - it's almost all water weight. Some people, however, just don't lose the water weight right away. And apparently some may even temporarily retain a little bit *more* water during induction, for reasons not well understood. Maybe they are salt sensitive and eating more salt. Maybe it's their body's ideosyncratic reaction to the stress of an abrupt change in diet. Who knows? But even if you lose a pound or two of fat, if you retain water temporarily that may mask any weight loss from fat.
But... if you stick with the program, you will probably start to see the weight start to drop. For one thing, as you get into ketosis your insulin levels should start to drop, which usually causes appetite to decrease, so you eat fewer calories without even trying. Also, the lowered insulin levels make burning body fat occur more efficiently.
I remember one lady - Lia - who actually gained a couple pounds over induction, but who went on to lose over a hundred pounds on Atkins. And another woman from England who didn't lose, and didn't lose... and then all of a sudden dropped a whole bunch of weight! She continued to lose like that... nothing, nothing, nothing... then all of a sudden these big 10 or 20 pound drops! Most likely she was losing fat all along, but for some reason her body was just hanging onto the water for ages.
Moral, your mileage may vary... considerably! Don't give up yet.

jb1677@NoSpam - 03 Mar 2006 13:40 GMT Joe: I found the strips, and per them there are ketones present
Roger: I am 6'1" 275lbs I excercise regularly just not any more than pre atkins but I will make a point to step it up.
Jeri: I will have to read into this more, I thought the foods we were eating were proper. I know fat is essential but I cant bring myself to JUST eat very fatty foods, I must have my chicken and turkey (which I assume are the items you refer to with protien but low fat)
Wayne: The items you mentioned as "interesting" were home made, we (my wife and I) scrutinize over every ingrediant that we eat. Also no caffene or alcohol (again aside from a few shredded carrots we are sticking to the book as much as possible). The book said that artifiial sweetner was ok, and in the past 10/11 days I have had 3 caffene free sugar free sodas and 2 ssugar free jello's but I will gladly cut those out as well.
Also the wife has been counting accurtately to the best of my knowledge, also she has been eating basically the same thing as me, same portions etc and dropping about 1lb a day!
Hannah: I have no plans of quitting, just the overall feeling better and slepping makes it worth it to me.

French Onion dip on green beans or brussel sprouts is great. Actually, it goes good with pork chops or hamburger too.
There are a half dozen flavors of this dip in most grocery store dairy sections.
Then there are shredded cheeses that sprinkle over veggies of all kinds.
Think of the Calcium and Potassium.

Then just keep plugging. There are added benefits besides weight loss - Lower blood pressure, most likely lower cholesterol, no more acid reflux, skin and hair better, teeth improved, etc. The weight loss will come...

I was eating too lean foods and not getting anywhere till I styarted adding Butter, Sour cream and other fat based products. Fat seems to kick start the weight loss!
Noway2 - 03 Mar 2006 13:33 GMT If I remember correctly there was even a statement in the Atkins book about how it is possible that you may gain some during induction, especially in the early statges.
If you are feeling better, it is a pretty good indication that something is going right.
