Toasting's effect on carbs????

Since the unfortunate demise of Atkins bread and bagels (which
basically priced themselves out of the market), I've had to scrounge
around for other types of LC bread to use for breakfast (with whipped
cream cheese or sausage) or for a sandwich to take to lunch. Pepperidge
Farm makes a "Carb Smart" bread which is good and is 5 grams of carb
per slice.

I was just wondering: does toasting the bread have any effect on the
amount of carbs in it?

I just use low carb tortillas and make wraps.

I totally second that. Skip the bread, use LC tortillas if you
must. You can stuff a wrap with far more meat & cheese than you can
stack a reasonable sandwich, anyways.

I go for wraps mostly too, but I do get a ten carb sandwich
from time to time.

No.

It has to.  Burn it to a crisp, and the digestible carbs must be lower.

However, this misses the point, that a low carber should not be eating bread
or toast.

I am glad to see this question. I have had myself lately.
When I was a kid my Mom would always darkly toast
any slice of bread she was going to eat. She was always
trying to follow Weight Watchers.  If in fact there are no
carbs burned off, is fat or protein reduced, or does the
calorie count too go unchanged?

Jimmy,

This is silly.  Just don't eat any bread....

Too much deprivation for me. I guess you can tell from
my posts thus far I am hanging on to bread and beer.

Well yeah, if ya burn it to ashes, there won't be carbs left anymore.

I don't think this is what most people mean by "toast" though.

Agreed.

I do the LC tortilla thing myself, but only once or twice a week.  I'm
even leery of them.

Better to learn to eat without bread - there's tons of food you can eat
without needing bread.

I don't think so unless you really torch it.

On the other hand, if you cut the slice in half, hold the sliced edges
down, then shake real hard you can shake some carbs out the edges ;) .

Ah yes...
Like breaking cookies into little pieces.
All the carbs and calories leak out when you do that.

Didn't you read the faq?

It has to lower the carb content, as the carbs are oxidized by the
heat.  However, I doubt it makes any significant difference, because
only a small portion on the surface is actually affected.
