Hi -- this is my second go at Atkins style low carb. After my last
child I weaned at 2y and started Atkins to get off the extra weight. I
was very organised and wrote everything down from day to day, with all
my menus ( I have heaps of recipes if anyones interested ) and in total
lost about 15 kg. Stayed around goal weight of 52 53 kg for about 12m
and then started to slide with my carb counts.
I found that this time I have been back on induction ( although
including nuts ! ) for nearly a week and dont really know if I have
moved any weight.
Im not obsessing with menus this time as I did Atkins for so long I
just know how I should be eating so Im not necessarily staying under 20
g of carbs a day either. May check ketosis, but I think that my
metabolism has changed since I first started yeas ago, and that my
tolerance for how many, and how less carbs I eat may have changed.
Keep up the good work, but remember that if you measure yourself more
often than weighing yourself, then you wil get a better idea of how you
are loosing.

A little bit of obsessing can actually help you.

That just depends....

yeah I know it's not really induction !!! -- I suppose that Im not
striving for induction like I did in the first place. I have about 8kg
to move and I probably should obsess ... a little.
Ihave been following the amounts of carbs I intake, and stay around 20
to 25 / day, and have done on and off for quite a while.
So...... my body has adapted to this, and I find that I really have to
drop my limit to nearly 5 before I start to loose again.
I think that my mistake has been to include Low carb, Low Gi foods into
my menus for the last 6 months and on occasion to eat a few items
containing sugar.
Being a naturopath I eat very healthy anyway, but I have slow
metabolism, and low thyroid
Things will pick up -- speed up, just have to re-adjust.

Isn't Low carb autmatically low GI? I think what you mean is foods
that do have more carbs, but are supposed to be low GI, either
naturally or through the use of sugar alcohols, etc.

So what's your take on low thyroid and low carb.
Does it help or hinder.
I have low thyroid output, but would prefer to treat with diet and
reduce thyroxine. Any tips?

T3 output is driven by the leptin level. Leptin level is driven by
amount of stored fat plus by the highest carb intake in the last
few weeks. Also there are studies that show that T3 output
drops starting about 2 weeks into a VLCH diet. Very Low
CarboHydrate seems to be 20 grams per dat in these studes
so they mean extending Induction.l
While there's more to thyroid status than T3, what the above
means is folks with established Induction should ignore any
advice that Induction can be extended beyond day 15.

Going back to the idea that there's more to thyriod status than
T3, it isn't as bad as it looks if you only test T3. Apparently
T4 isn't reduced.

Have as much carbs as your plan allows. On Atkins that means
moving up to fall out of ketosis, then hanging out at the highest
level that keeps you in ketosis.
Alternately, since the timing window is two weeks, one day every
two weeks on a low fat reversal with very high carbs but low fat
to match will serve to reset your leptin and therefore pop your
T3 back up. Flavorwise, I like Indian vegitarian style meals for
low-fat/high-carb. The problem is learning which carby foods you
can and can't have to trigger binges. So this cycling method
ends up just as effective but more risk and more work than the
"just barely in ketosis" method.

Under 50 grams of carbs per day or under 800 calories per day will
rapdily drop T3 levels.
There is no two week delay for many folks, particularly if T3 is already
on the borderline.

Only if you never exercise.
