DisplayName - 19 May 2006 22:23 GMT Thanks OM, 051906 I found these at Whole Foods in Austin for 1.50$ per 8oz package. I'll look for HanYang another time. I was with my wife at the WF Lamar location a little North of the river. Is Han Yang much further that way? I normally stay on the other side of Town Lake. Thanks again. They will be a new addition to my shopping list. Jimmy 280/267/180

Han Yang is close to 183. :-) I'm sure they are in the phone book so you can get an actual address.
> I normally stay on the other side of Town Lake. <lol> Me too as I live in San Marcos, so I stock up on them and get about 30 at a time. <G>

Make some fresh meat stock to cook them in, and add a little soy sauce. They soak up any flavors you add to them pretty much.
I never tried Whole Foods for them. $1.50 is cheaper than on line, but I like the $.99 price better. <G>

I added even more salt because I have been craving salt since going LC. I don't ever think of salt with LC foods. I formerly salted many things. I am wondering if increasing salt will reduce cramping, so I am trying to add a little here and there. Jimmy

Go to Sun harvest.
Pick up a _large_ bottle of "Now" brand full spectrum minerals.
Take a double dose (two twice per day) for 3 days, then just take two per day from then on after.
Should (hopefully) take care of the problem. Worked for me anyway...
Soy sauce is loaded with salt and adds nice flavor as well. Same for Teryaki sauce and Hoisin sauce.

DisplayName - 21 May 2006 11:54 GMT Om, 052106 I may try that. Sometimes I still have to jump up from sitting to straighten my legs to avoid a bad cramp. I think it may be a salt and or water intake shortage. I have heard potassium can be a problem, and athletes sometimes take a supplement. I've heard too they have overdosed on potassium. I was thinking of taking a daily multivitamin. Is that what Now is? Jimmy

DisplayName - 21 May 2006 13:40 GMT Do you suppose the potassium in a multivitamin would be sufficient? Jimmy

I don't know - perhaps. I was just sharing my experience, I can never remember to take my multi - I figure I'm doing well to take something a couple of times a week - lol.

DisplayName - 22 May 2006 20:02 GMT Sherry, 052206 Thanks! I'll look at potassium supplements as well as multivitamins to see what the potassium difference might be. If they would add something to a multivitamin for CRS we both might remember to take them! Jimmy

I also take "Nature's plus" trace minerals.
I've not cramped in years now. :-)

That was why I posted the original suggestion...
"Now" is just a brand name. They make many supplements. The one that ended the cramping was the "Full Spectrum Minerals".
A high protein diet tends to cause an increase in calcium loss via the kidneys. I learned that in my studies on general nutrition so it explained the cramping.
Supplementing calcium by itself does not work. You have to have the proper balance between Calcium, Phosphorous and Magnesium for it to be utilized properly. A little vitamin D won't hurt either if you avoid sunlight like I do.
As for potassium, fish (especially shellfish) have a lot of it in it, as do dairy products. If you eat those, you might not have to supplement.

If you eat those, you might not have to supplement. Phosphorus intake is not likely to be a problem. Calcium, magnesium, and potassium supplementation may be beneficial. In addition, a low-carber should be getting plenty of dark green leafy veggies and other highly colored veggies. They, and salt-water fish, will help ensure adequate trace mineral intake. Seaweed can be a plus as well, so long as you aren't hyperthyroid (iodine content can be a problem in that case, but anectdotally can be helpful if hypothyroid.)
Personally, I just use a light sprinkling of Morton's Llite Salt (mix of sodium and potassium chloride) on my food. That's usually enough for most people, even in induction when you're losing a lot of fluid. Cheaper and just as effective as potassium supplements. People on certain prescription medications, such as some types of diuretics, need to be careful about potassium supplementation, however. They should check with their doctor if unsure.
For me, I've found that calcium-magnesium supplementation has been the key to preventing cramping. The rule of thumb is to take twice the amount of calcium as magnesium, in mg. So if you take a 500 mg calcium tablet, you should take 250 mg magnesium along with it. In the summer, when I'm doing a lot of perspiring, I'll take this ratio twice a day, plus use the Lite Salt on foods. If I forget I will sometimes get some cramping. The calcium and magnesium seems to have more to do with cramping, for me, than does the potassium.
I use the cheap oyster shell calcium and magnesium oxide supplements from K-Mart. I learned from personal experience that they are actually better absorbed than some of the highly touted "high quality" (and several times more expensive) Ca & Mg supplements from the health food stores.

I had been low-carbing for quite a while. It was mid-summer, and I was doing work that resulted in quite a bit of perspiration. I changed over to the more expensive Ca-Mg supplement and within a couple days was suddenly cramping. Took more, no change. Got suspicious and went to K-Mart and purchased my old CA & Mg supplements, started taking them instead of the new stuff. Voila, cramping stopped.
Not a controlled study, and n+1, but good enough for me.

It works for me so I know what you mean.
The Calcium is a mix of Carbonate, Amino acid chelate, and Citrate, and the Magnesium is a mix of Magnesium Oxide, Amino acid chelate and Citrate.
You've never half died until you've had QUADRICEP cramps at 2 am. :-P It's a whole new experience in pain.......
I've not had those in years now, thank the gods!
