Hood's Carb Countdown name change

Now Hood's CALORIE Countdown.

And I think the product line is down to just Non-fat, 2% white and 2%
chocolate milk.  Whole milk, and the Orange Juice and Lemonade products were
phased out a year to a year and a half ago...

I've been having trouble finding these products in the Portland area
(Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard).  Anybody know who has good stock?  Or are
you keeping that to yourself?  You know who you are!!!  :-)   I do buy 2-4
cartons when I can find it. LOL

In a pinch, I've used Soy products like Soy Slender, but it has all the
consistency of water. :-)

Cheers!

Permit me to suggest using heavy cream, a non-sugar sweetener, and a bit of
water to achieve a very low carb milk-like drink.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I've tried that a couple of times in the past
and wasn't too pleased, but it will do in a pinch. :-)

Around here, if I open a carton of cream and turn around to slowly, it's
gone to butter (or something). :-)

Well, my local store has been out of HOOD for a couple of weeks now...

May I please have a specific recipe?  <sheepish grin>  or is it just to
taste?

I THOUGHT it was 50/50, but you say "... a bit of water..."

Thanks!

I'm afraid it has to be to taste.

Today I mixed 1 ounce of heavy cream with 3 or 4 ounces of "Twister" diet
orange soda.  It tastes like a 50/50 bar.

I haven't been able to find the Hood low carb products for months in
Southeast Virginia either.

Still readily available here in NJ.  I learned of the name change when
I got one of the printed register coupons they give you when you check
out.   Haven't seen the actual product.  Hope it's the same and just a
name change.

You know, I'm wondering now if the changed the name to Calorie
Countdown and I assumed it was a low-fat product not realizing  that
it's the same thing.  Could be; I'l check the stores again tomorrow.

Right - I never became an "islander", even after 9 years on Vashon. :-)
When some friends moved back to Portland, I looked around and figured it was
time.  So here I've been, just coming up on 1 year.

I still work for the same company.  They moved the other way, from Downtown
Seattle, to Lynnwood, now Everett.  Isn't the internet wunaful?  :-)

On a down note, things were pretty stressful during and after the move, and
I gained 30 pounds.  Still fighting that to get back where I was.

On the positive side, I got a Sheltie girl, "Arwen", to help with walking
motivation.  She's so cute, and about 20 months old now.

Otherwise busy and lurking... :-)

I did see some of your latest pictures!!  Looking good, Laureen!

Hey, if they are changing the name, then that likely means they intend to
keep selling the product.  Perhaps that's also why these products haven't
been readily showing up in certain places....they were waiting for new
product....

Thanks, I'll take a look.  I admit I don't usually shop at FM.  Last time I
was there, I stopped to look at books and someone co-opted my cart... LOL

I think more has changed here than the name.   I just bought the new
"Calorie Countdown" version of their chocolate milk.  I'm pretty sure
the Carb Countdown version had 3g of carbs per cup, just like the
regular milk version.   The Calorie Countdown replacement has 5g of
carb.  Anyone else compare the carbs?

And I think they speak with forked tounge.    I was pretty sure the
Carb Countdown Chocolate Milk was 3g of carb, just like the 2% Carb
Countdown Milk.   I always thought they were interchangeable as far as
carbs when buying them.

I did a seach online and found this article from when they introduced
the original low carb products.  And sure enough, it says the chocolate
version of had 3g of carb, same as the 2% regular milk version.

http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3301/is_12_104/ai_111508191
Hood Carb Countdown varieties include Homogenized, 2% Reduced Fat and
Fat Free white varieties, and 2% Reduced Fat Chocolate. Hood Carb
Countdown provides the essential vitamins and minerals found in milk,
without all the carbohydrates. The three white varieties have 75% fewer
carbohydrates and 50% more protein than whole milk, while the 2%
Reduced Fat Chocolate variety has 90% fewer carbohydrates and 33% more
protein than chocolate milk. All varieties provide 3g of carbohydrates
per 8-oz serving and offer significantly fewer calories than their
higher-carbohydrate alternatives.

It's still a good product, but it does appear to have a little more
carb.

Seems to me it was always a little higher than their white milk.

I just looked at where I had entered it into FitDay and it was 3 carbs/1
fiber there.  I hadn't bought it in a long time so they might have changed
it somewhere along the way even before the name change.  I got some when it
first came out to try it but have never been a big chocolate milk drinker so
only bought it once.

The above URL is to a cached page in Google of Hood's new NF label for
the Calorie Countdown Chocolate ersatz milk.  It appears the carbs have
increased, but face facts - chocolate milk is *not* a necessity.  ;-)

A followup, showing the label as the Carb Countdown Chocolate used to
be.  Click on the pic of the CC "Milk" to bring up the labels:

Good detective job!   I was trying to find something like that.  It
definitely shows that the carb count of the chocolate version has
changed.   In fact, if the old label was correct, the chocolate at 2g
net carb, actually had 1g less than the white milk version.

Still, at 4g net now, it's still a good product.  But it does show how
you have to constantly check labels.

A funny sidenote: I don't buy anything but the 2%, but I use that all
the time.  I never noticed the label had changed to "Calorie
Countdown".   I can ferret out darn near anything on the net, but can't
see something right in front of my own face sometimes.  <G>

This is what I use in my coffee now...and about once a month my husband and
I each have a glass of the chocolate; with a little xylitol added it's
better than "real" chocolate milk, we think!

My son is a big milk drinker, and I just got tired of watching him
glug the stuff. So I keep soy slender around--I tried the Westsoy
lc alternatives but they just didn't taste as good.  The only
problem is the expense.  I just keep the chocolate, cappucino or
vanilla around as a milk substitute. Weirdly, it is getting easier
to find, so I no longer have to drive 30 miles to a specialty
health food store to get it. I haven't used it in coffee though but
we ran out of cream today so I'll give it a try

I agree that the Westsoy isn't as good...we like the cappucino also although
I've only gotten it once or twice.  It was $1.89 at the health food store in
Lansing; here, I have to go to Walmart to get it but it's much cheaper -
$1.48 I think...

I pay a whole dollar more than that. I pay about $2.50 per litre when
real milk is only $2.50 for a whole gallon.  Even the cheapest cream
is usually about $4 a quart.  LC is expensive.

Toward the beginning of this thread, I mentioned I tried, and liked, Soy
Slender taste-wise.  But the consistency is like water.

What kinds of things do you do with it, other than just as a drink?  e.g.
coffee? cereal? eggs? and so on.

Thanks,

Steve

I've used soy milk to make shakes.  Mix it with the very soft type of
tofu and add flavoring.  Chocolate worked best for me.  They taste
better than either the Atkins or Carb Solutions shakes.

But, the Hood products taste so superior, I haven't bought soy milk
products since they became available.
