I have been on a low carb, low fat diet, my own version of the Sout
Beach diet, I guess. I am mostly following those guidelines. I lost 3
pounds without any problem at all. Now for the last few weeks, I hav
been staying about the same, not gaining , but not losing more. I a
not eating any different, and not cheating, but the loss has come to
stand still. My daugher who is going to LA weight loss, says that I a
probably in " starvation mode" and should start eating. Since I am i
a small town, I cannot go to any kind of planned program. I only hav
about 20 or 25 pounds more to lose, but just cannot get it gone. Anyon
have any suggestions, or experiences like this?????? I am eating ver
little bread or starches, no potatoes, etc. I eat one slice of bread
day, and mostly some chicken, veggies, eggs, salad, and use no suga
products, and splenda or equal and low fat creamer etc

Starvation mode doesn't last very long. When there are LESS calories going
in than are being BURNED you will lose weight. You can't make calories from
thin air. You probably need to cut back on the amount of food you are
consuming. You're at a maintenance level now.

Have you tried eating less and perhaps getting more exercise such as
walking?
Anyone

Yes. I had to EAT LESS. I'm not saying it to be rude but at some point you
reached maintenance and there you sit. So you need to either burn those
calories off with exercise or curtail your intake of food.

On Atkins there are warnings against mixing both low carb and
low fat. The chemistry makes it clear why this is so. Trade
protein calories for fat calories and watch your loss resume.

What are your stats? More to lose faster to lose it, less to lose
slower to lose it. If you are now nearing your ideal weight the
loss rate is supposed to taper off. Also pauses are normal but
if you haven't seen one yet you don't know that yet.

They don't have book stores or libraries in your town but they do
have internet? Wow! I guess you don't mean the same thing I do
for the words.
Try switching from your own version to the directions as they
appear in the book. That *IS* a planned program. And the plans
in the popular books *work*.

Exactly how did you select your goal?

I meant there are no excercise classes here that I can find, and I a
not good on doing it on my own, although I have tried. There is
library, but no book stores in town, except a religious one. I can g
to a nearby town to shop at Books A Million, but I find the internet
better source. I have internet, but only dial up where I live.
I am now at 175 and need to go to 150 . I am 5 ' 7 "

You don't have to be at a class to exercise. Walking is exercise; so is
bicycling or climbing stairs. To say "I am not good on doing it on my own,
although I have tried" is a cop out and you know it. Do something FOR
yourself instead of coming up with an excuse ("I don't have a buddy to help
me."). Go out and get one of those humongous exercise balls. You can do that
stuff in your living room while watching television. But, walking gets you
out into the fresh air and will pick up your mood.

Sounds like an okay target for a female but a bit too low for a male.
Picking an objectively acheivable target is crucial - Every pound
belwo what our body thinks is our ideal weight not what our mid
thinks means more effort in mainentance. Go too low and it
takes eternal effort at almost the same level as the loss phases,
pick right and it takes eternal vigilance but very little effort.
> You don't have to be at a class to exercise.
Ahem. One of the biggest falsehoods out there - If it does not
happen in a gym it does not count as exercise. One really good
early fitness goal is to reach a point where you start thinking a
long walk doesn't count as exercise unless there's a slope
somewhere along the path. Get to that point and then start
worrying about more organized exercise plans. Start from that
point and you're already doing better than many.

Are you noticing any changes other than what the scale says? I know
that, in my case, weight loss would sometimes stop but my body would go
through a period of readjustment. It got so I almost ALWAYS could tell
that I had lost weight up to a week before the scale reflected it.
Also, weight loss can slow down CONSIDERABLY as you get closer to your
goal (depending on how low your goal is).
Upon reflection, I remembered posting here on 7/2/04 under the subject
of: Saffire's Halfway Houses For Wayward Fat :-) So I just now googled
it. The text was as follows for your amusement or contemplation:
I was thinking today about how my usual pattern of weight loss
seems to be that I look and feel thinner well before it shows up
on the scale -- sometimes a week or more. I'd KNOW with a
CERTAINTY that my body is smaller in various places, yet the scale
doesn't budge. Actually, that's not entirely true -- often the
(digital) scale will flicker not just for a fraction of a second
but for up to 2+ seconds at a LOWER weight, then suddenly decide
to jump up to what it's been for a while, if not HIGHER (this
usually results in me calling the scale a "little f.cker" with an
occasional muttering involving the word "cocktease").
Well, if my body is smaller, but the weight is the same, where the
hell does the fat go? It can't ALWAYS be water weight because
it's too steady over the course of many days. A certain amount of
fat has left my THIGHS -- is it HIDING somewhere else? I've
decided that there must be little tiny houses located in various
neighborhoods in my body where fat goes during its transitioning
phase --little halfway houses for orphaned fat (or criminal fat on
parole -- take your pick). Eventually the other residents get up
in arms about the bad element in the neighborhood (or they've
served their prescribed time and are free to go) and the fat
finally gets drummed out for good.
Until I hear a more scientific explanation for this oh-so-
predictable behavior of MY body, that's my story and I'm sticking
to it :-)

Hi,
I just wanted to say that it is essential that you eat 6 small meal
throughout the day. If you can't fit that in try slimfast for low car
dieters and exercise within your target heart range. I am doing th
southbeach diet and it has been working for me since January. It i
always hardest to lose the last 25 lbs. Just keep working on it an
don't give up. When my weight loss stalled for a couple of weeks I wa
told it was not enough protein through out the day. Keep me posted
