tenplay - 22 Aug 2006 17:59 GMT Has anyone tried Dr. Bernstein's lc program? I just borrowed a copy from our local library. My wife doesn't like it because it essentially bans all fruits and grains (besides 100% bran). My main question is whether it works as well or better than the other popular lc programs. I guess I am willing to give up all fruits and grains if such a strict regimen is necessary. I am a 62 yo male and currently 170 lbs and 5'7". My physician told me that I won't have to take any diabetes or cholesterol medications if I lose 20 lbs. Is Bernstein the best way for me to reach my goal? Thanks for any advice/suggestions.

I suggest you read Bernstein's book - the latest edition. However, it is very likely that if you adopt a real LC eating plan and start a regular exercise routine (consisting of cardio, weight lifting, and fun stuff), you will be able to do just fine in controling your BG levels. Bernstein is very strict, but some can do well without going as far as he suggests.
You also need to get a BG meter and learn to check your BG level 1 and 2 hours after meals.
Atkins (even without induction) works well for many T2s as well, since it basically comes done to controlling carb intake. Note that one can eat the LC fruits in moderation. Grain products are more limited, but the high fiber grain products like LC tortillas, can be typically be included in a diet plan under.

He's a bit over the top, even for many diabetics. Certainly worth reading to see where he's coming from, but something like Protein Power by the Drs Eades might suit you better, if you don't want to do Atkins.

Thanks for any advice/suggestions. I have Dr. Berstein's book, though I haven't read it cover to cover. There's a lot of good information there. He's too strict for me, but I figure if he's lived that long with Type I, he knows what he's doing. Atkins isn't as strict as Bernstein.

I don't know anyone who follows his dietary recommendations as written, but the real reason to read Bernstein is to understand and learn how to manage your own diabetes with the wealth of technical, medical and scientific info he provides.

Thanks for any advice/suggestions. Like most any other diet program, some will do well with the _(**(&&%&$% diet plan (doesn't matter which diet) and others won't.
How can strangers tell you the best way for you to lose 20 pounds?
If you become DETERMINED to lose those 20 pounds, you have a better chance of doing it.
If at first you don't succeed with plan _)*(**&, then try again with diet plan &%^$&^$%#$.
Keep at it. Keep at working to find out how YOU will lose those 20 pounds, and eventually you will know what is best for you.
You might look into the books on doubting conventional medical wisdom on cholesterol in medicine. Or, you could just accept whatever your doctor tells you, as most do.
Good luck.
Oh, low fat diets didn't work for me. Atkins low carb worked wonders, by comparison.

Curt - 27 Aug 2006 23:03 GMT Grain is the latest in the 'FAD' diets. I grew up on a farm, Guess what we fed to the Cows and Pigs to fatten them up before butchering them.
Whole Grain!
Why is America FAT.... Ask the Doctors that feed us this CRAP! So they can 'Cure us'

I have often wondered what it was that I did to deserve my good health, great relationship, rewarding career, loving children and promising future.
Apparently it was reading Bernstein and ignoring most of what he wrote.
Following Bernstein is a bit like taking a three year degree course in French simply to order correctly when dining in a French restaurant.
He is over the top, his recommendations are probably great for people who have extremely bad and difficult to control diabetes, and want to drop or reduce medication, but for most it is overkill. He must have been frightened by a carb when he was a baby, he seems to have a terror of them.
Never the less, his book is good reference work in many areas. It has value, but not as a dietary guide as far as I am concerned.

Or, perhaps he actually realizes that most people won't meet he tight guidelines, but many who read his book and understand how to control their diabetes, will still benefit simply because they will likely meet levels that are good enough (better than those of "Authority" orgs like the ADA). I do think that for diabetics, it is strongly advisable to keep "normal" BG levels at all times. I don't think one needs to necessarily follow Bernstein to do that, however, but that really depends on who you are.
