Going Out to Eat: Suggestions

Best suggestions for going out to eat? Usually we hit Red Lobster on
some All You Can Eat protein night.  Red Lobster's item of choice as of
right now is "endless shrimp."  The only acceptable suggestion under
their offerings is the shrimp scampi. (The endless items aren't listed
under here:
http://www.redlobster.com/lighthouse/listing.asp?menu=4&submenu=42) but
I like that they have that nutrition generator available.  Usually we
get a broiled feast plus crab legs and have plenty to take home for
snacking.

But if anyone has any better suggestions from other restaurant chains,
please let me know.

Any place that serves meat, veggies cooked to order, and salads works for
me.

A lot of places will serve ribs without sauce if you ask. Their sub veggies
for fries, pasta, and tators, if you ask.

I've had good luck at

Ruby Tuesday
Fatz
All of the steak joints (though I don't eat steak that much)
Carrabbas.
Applebees
PF Chang (Mu Shi X w/o wraps)

Anyway, that's all I can think of now.  There are a few places that make
thing harder, though.

    It depends on how carb restricted your diet is.

    Low carb is intuitive once one understands the
    basics.  For example, if you want a sandwich
    you eat all of it but the bread.  The same
    goes for a hamburger or pizza.  The same
    intuitive approach can be applied to any
    restaurant or situation.  Sources of concentrated
    carbs like noodles, rice, flour and sugar based
    sauces and beverages are avoided.  That's really
    all there is to it unless one is in the early
    (strict) phase of a low carb diet and/or is
    diabetic and trying to control it through diet.
    In that case one is better off not eating out.

    The only other thing to consider is portion control.
    These days many restaurants serve 2 or 3 times
    the appropriate amount for a dieters single meal.
    Be wary of that and get in the habit of bringing
    some or most of it home for later meals.

Go and do it.  Doesn't matter which place, what chain.  There
is almost no such thing as a restaurant that doesn't have low
carb food on the menu.  It's even rare to need a fully custom
order.

Read the menu trying to not use your pre-low-carb habits of
scanning.  Read the items one by one the first time through
and think what you will and won't eat.  Think about how you
would scan that menu given your new eating habits.  You will
find some low carb options at nearly any place.  When you
think about how you would skim the menu as a low carber,
you'll find each new place easier as you change your reading
habits for menus.

Then think about substitutions.  Sliced tomoatoes instead
of hash browns.  Hold the pasta, but is there a small house
salad available as a substitute?  Can I have that french onion
soup without the crouton please?  I know it will come out not
as full and that's okay.

The important point in this is to make choices when you're
there rather than worrying about which place to go.

I can find something to eat pretty much anywhere, and I almost never eat
in chain restaurants, except for Outback Steakhouse.  The Outback
Special, sans potato, with vegetables, a Caesar salad (sans croutons) is
a great bargain and a very satisfying meal.

remoulade (my remoulade is better, but remoulade has horseradish/mustard

 But they served it raw (I swear! it was completely uncooked!!) I
didn't complain. I put it in a box and took it home and cooked it in a
hot pan for about 2 minutes on each side to get it "rare".  And I
ordered it medium rare.  If I had ordered it rare, they'd have walked
the cow in and carved it in front of me!  Very bizarre. The salad and
steamed broccoli were quite good.

Did you get the caesar?  I love how garlicky it is.  Did you get only
broccoli?  I've always gotten a mix of broccoli, yellow squash and carrots.

Glad you enjoyed your meal, even if your beef was raw (ick!).

We went to Red Lobster but they were too crowded, went to the next Red
Lobster (it was closed) and the third Red Lobster had a line extending
out the door...So we waited 45 min at Outback.

The Caesar salad was wonderful.  Yes, I picked out the croutons.  And my
son gave me the 4 pieces of squash out of his mixed veggies. The table
next to us ordered something like six huge pieces of cheesecake, but I
didn't even think twice about it.

There was actually enough roast that it lasted me two meals.

The raw condition of the roast--in a sense that was my fault. I was
trying to ask her how Outback defines rare--because I wanted to avoid
that too rare thing that happens when you have one definition of rare
and the restaurant has another.  I didn't want to ask for it medium rare
and end up with it medium well.  I can  just picture her laughing in the
kitchen telling the chef--"No really, she wants it really really rare."
I bet they were betting on whether I would send it back.

Benji got the cheese fries as an appetizer.  They brought him a pile of
french fries twice as big as my HEAD.

We went the other night and I had the Brisbane Caesar with chicken... I
remember their dressing as being a lot spicier, but only the meat had any
flavor.  What's up with that?  :-)

If you have a Golden Corall any where near your area, it's definately worth
the trip. It's an all you can eat buffet, featuring AYCE steak. Each night
of the week also has another feature, such as fish, Shrimp, or Mexican,
etc., so it's not JUST steak. I only have one piece of steak, about 6 oz or
so, but they have a fantastic salad bar, and they have a VAST assortment of
fresh cooked non starchy (and other) veggies. I can go there, and am happy
as can be! They also have a huge dessert bar, including ice cream for the
non LC-ers. Oh yeah, and they don't use tenderizers in their meats, and I
doubt they use MSG on their foods.
It's very reasonable in price, too; about $10/person.

We used to have a Golden Corral, a Barnhills and Sizzler, but they're
all gone now. Barnhills used to fix 6 ounce sirloins and keep them warm
in a beef broth so they didn't dry out.  They were good...

I don't eat out much any more (Twice this year!) since I have been
working at home. But I cook a lot.  One of my kids was talking about
bringing home a box of crablegs ($40 for 10 lbs) for an all you can eat
at home feast.  That's enough for 4 of us for 2 meals (since I'm the
only one low carbing.)

you know its great to eat out , this is the easiest time I have ever
had, however I hate these chains.  Once I see the Sysco truck pull up,
its not for me!!!!!  This Sysco has destroyed food.
