Hi everyone

I am really desperate for help. I am 37 and trying to get pregnant, there is
nothing wrong with me (hubbys problem) but as we have to have fertility
treatments i have been told to lose weight, our first and only baby was
stillborn in March 2005 and i am very depressed and anxious. I want to drop
some weight fast and then maintain a steady weight loss. I have lost weight
on lo carb before but i have lost my way and  need someone who has lost
weight tell me what to do and eat. I am too stressed and tired to do all the
research. I am not coping with the way i eat now which is low calorie and
low fat and i exercise about 5 hours a week and i am not losing. I am about
230 pounds and feel like i just need someone to say 'follow this eating
plan' i am losing my mind!!

Thank you
Michelle

Michelle, to keep it simple, I'll just say, cut out starches and add
proteins you like along with some oils and dressings.  Cut the starch
out is the simplest thing to do, and the healthiest.

do with your diet.

Done that, still doing that. Thanks for your concern.

Good for you. Around here, you're a severe minority. Best of luck,
Michelle, Godspeed.

To keep the next steps simple:

Signature

1) Eat Till SATISFIED, Not STUFFED... Atkins repeated 9 times in the book
2) Exercise: It's Non-Negotiable..... Chapter 22 title, Atkins book
3) Don't Diet Without Supplemental Nutrients... Chapter 23 title, Atkins
book
4) A sensible eating plan, and follow it. (Atkins, Self Made or Other)

Good advice.

I'll just add -- get a second opinion.  I find it difficult to believe
that your weight has anything to do with getting pregnant.

I agree i have seen many many overweight women have babies but i suffered
from pre eclampsia (high blood pressure) and was told it will happen again
unless i lose weight.

I had pre-eclampsia when I was pregnant, too, and I wasn't overweight.

I'm just saying.  Please get a second opinion.

Hi i have had many opinions and all say the same. But the weight i need to
lose will take a good year maybe more so i am going to try to get pregnant
anyway.

Thanks for your help. In what week were you diagnosed with P/E? A friend of
mine got it like me at 22 weeks and her baby was born at 29 weeks and lived.

My first pregnancy I developed PE at 32 weeks and my daughter was born
(alive, thankfully) within a few days.  With my second daughter, my bp
started climbing right at the beginning of the pregnancy so my doctors
were treating me for it from the word go.  She was born on her due
date and has no ill effects from the medications I was on to keep
things under control.

It's uncommon that PE effects a second pregnancy, but since you have a
history of it, your doctor will probably treat you as 'high risk'
anyway.  For me, that meant weekly doctor's visits and bp checks
(either OB, Consultant or GP), twice-weekly testing of my urine for
protein (I did that one myself using 'dip-sticks' similar to ketostix)
and two kinds of medications (a beta-blocker and a vasodilator) that
were known to be safe during pregnancy.  It was a minor nuisance to
schedule all these visits, especially since I had a toddler (my
daughters are 15 months apart) but worth it for a healthy baby.

I do have some health issues from my complicated pregnancies.  My
blood pressure never did come down again and I have been on medication
ever since.  I also sustained considerable kidney problems (which only
resolved when I started low-carbing some 8 years ago) which caused
more than a few concerns there for a while.

My girls are now 10 and 11 years old and not for one second do I
regret having them, even with all the frustrations and concerns about
my health during those pregnancies.

You are so lucky i just cant believe after all we have been through its now
a sperm problem. I just feel like i get up and get kicked down again. I
would do anything, take anything, eat anything to have a live healthy baby.
I do have a plan which involves medication and injections daily once i fall
pregnant, just have to fall first!

Thank you.
Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I'm so sorry for your loss :-(

The best SIMPLE advice would be to, first and foremost, cut out sugars.
The second is to cut out or go very low on other starches (no bread,
potatoes, corn, peas, pasta, sugary fruits, etc.).  That leaves mostly
green veggies and proteins (meat, fish, poultry, eggs).

You may lose energy at first as your body adjusts to the shift from
burning mostly glycogen to burning mostly fat, but after a few days
(maybe a week or so, though), you should feel a burst of energy that
will make you feel GREAT!

Thanks for that, i guess i give up after a week as i don't feel any
different but i have been doing it for 2 days and feel good and if i
continue to do it and my daily treadmill and weights 3 times a week surely i
can lose some weight. Yesterday i had 2 boiled eggs for breakfast, prawn and
lettuce and tomato and little bit of onion for lunch, snacked on a piece of
cheese, two more eggs and for dinner had grilled chicken breast, beans,
zucchini, carrots with sesame seeds and snow peas and i did have a
tablespoon of peanut butter after dinner. Usually after dinner i am looking
to eat just about anything, but it was easier last night. So far today i
have had 2 sausages, lettuce, tomato, asparagus and some ham. Does this
sound ok? I have to have my vegies and salad!

Thanks
Michelle

The beans should probably be cut out for now.  When adding them back
later (in moderation), check for the carb count on them.  Not all beans
are equal and some can be quite starchy.  Carrots contain sugar, but
some people have small amounts in salad without any problems.  Snow peas
are also borderline.  The rest sounds okay (onions should also be done
in moderation).

I know that weight is your first and foremost concern, but as you
continue low-carbing you may notice that you FEEL a lot better.  For me,
the improvement in my health was so surprising and was such a relief to
me that it quickly (within about 3-4 weeks) became the overriding factor
in STAYING low carb.  Every bit of motivation helps!
