Low Sodium

Hey

Gotta come off my diuretics (Triam HTZ) and try to manage my sodium
intake on my own. Got any recommendations for a book/diet plan?

Why not drink plenty of water and be sure to get plenty of dietary
potassium and magnesium, using supplements if necessary?  They lower my
bp very effectively.  A diet high in these is typically lower in sodium,
unless you add it.

When I tried coming off the diuretic before, my ankles swelled to the
size of my thighs, and it kinda scared me, even though I didn't just
stop taking them all at once. I just wanted to avoid that this time, if
I can.

Hi Quasi,
My DH had a heart attack last Jan. and the dr. put him on a strict low
sodium diet. And yes, he also has to watch  fats.
His limit is about 2200 mg. daily. It took a LOT of label reading to conform
to this level.
Tomato products are high, usually, but there are no-salt-added products on
the shelves. Also do strict portion control. My husband never knew what one
portion was. All food was served 'family-style' with bowls and platters left
on the table.
He has also learned to cook! Wonder of wonders, he makes his own soup and
chicken meals.
Salads twice a day also helps control the appetite. Oil & vinegar for
dressings. Stay away from the packaged stuff.
Go to Barnes & Nobles, or any bookstore, and in the diet section they have
daily food planners and diaries to keep track of sodium in every meal.

You can contact me off list if you need help with the sodium. We've been
doing it for  almost a year, I haven't kept as low as DH but I feel guilty
if I'm eating something he  can't have. :)

Hey again and thanks to all who responded to my plea for help.

This week I have begun stir-frying my vegetables, and am casting an
"eagle-eye" on all labels for sodium content.

I started a "semi-vegetarian" diet a couple years ago to help combat my
rheumatoid arthritis/gout, so for the "meats" I am limiting myself to
chicken and fish (no shellfish), and that very sparingly.

Also a couple of years ago, I began getting these huge blisters on
either my hands or my feet (and once on both) for no apparent reason,
and I was thinking "Bullous Pemphigoid", so I went to see a
dermatologist. The good news was that the blisters were not cancerous,
but a fungus, and it was blamed on the diuretic I was taking along with
my BP meds.

(I had never heard of a diuretic causing a fungus/blisters, have
y'all?)

Long story short, I was instructed to limit my sodium and come off the
diuretic completely.

When I tried that (slowly), I started swelling up and I freaked and
went back on the Triam HTZ and when I went to the doc for a check up
last week, HE got pissed because I had had another flare-up with the
blisters, and thought I was off the diuretic, so I am trying again, and
this time I am REALLY controlling the sodium and so far, so good.

Some of y'all may remember me from this group a few years ago, and
yeah, here I am again, still tryin' to hang in there. :)

So anyway, I got a book called The No Salt Cookbook (couldn't find one
called "Low Sodium Dieting or anything similar) and I am learning the
joys of steaming my veggies and adding rice, and like I said: so far,
so good.

So thanks again for the help and the kind words!

Ketosis can cause a significant water loss.  Maybe that will be
enough that you don't need your diuretics.

Also eating grain-free natural food can reduce inflamation.
Maybe the combination would be enough.  Fresh meat and fresh
veggies.  Your variety would come from cooking methods and
herbs.
