Doing low-carb for the first time

Hi all, I'm Tara and I'm new here.  I'm 40, 5'6" and I weighed 268 this
morning.  That is 10 pounds less than my highest weight ever.   I lost some
last year watching calories and fat, but was always starving.  I gained back
20 of the 30 I lost.

I've never tried following low carb so I read Dr. Atkins book and today I
started on day 1 of induction.  A couple of my friends followed Atkins and
had great success, and most of all, they said they were never hungry.  That
is a big plus for me.

Tomorrow, I am getting a new treadmill delivered to use while it is too cold
to walk outside.  Walking is pretty much my limit.  I am dealing with some
health problems and might be having female related surgery in a couple
months, I'd like to lose weight prior to that.

I am also dealing with limitations brought on by excess weight, namely very
sore grinding knees and very little muscle just about everywhere.  I plan on
using my treadmill and hand weights to start out with.

I'm psyched to try something different (low carb).  I hope this goes well
for me.  Do you all do any kind of weekly weigh-ins here?

Hi, Tara,

Not so much, but some folks find it useful to report their own weight
progress in posts, in their sig lines, etc.  There used to be monthly
challenges, but I don't think I've seen them so much any more, either.

If you have questions, ask them.  If you have stuff to share, share it.
If you want support for your progress or help over the bumps, it's
here for you.

Welcome,

Susan

Hi, and congratulations on starting.

There used to be some kind of weigh-ins, but for some reason, there
aren't any anymore.

Some people use their signature line (or sig file)to give a weight
status. It works like this

Jim
240/192/165

which means:
240= beginning weight
192= current weight
165= goal weight

and of course it is in pounds.

I had a niece who elected bariatric surgery rather than to continue to
fight the weight battle with just will power and "conventional diet
approaches". She was at over 400 lbs and managed to stabalize at around
150. Additional surgery was required to handle excess skin. She could
only do water exercises because of lower limb joint problems.

She couldn't understand Atkins at all, and never did it.

The treadmill is a good idea.  Let's hope that after a while, you get to
where you can do long outdoor walks.

Keep reading and rereading your Atkins book. I made the mistake of
thinking I knew all the important stuff from reading it once.

After rereading it several times, I summarized it in just a few lines.

1) Eat Till SATISFIED, Not STUFFED... Atkins repeated 9 times in the book
2) Exercise: It's Non-Negotiable..... Chapter 22 title, Atkins book
3) Don't Diet Without Supplemental Nutrients... Chapter 23 title, Atkins
book
4) A sensible eating plan, and follow it. (Atkins, Self Made or Other)

Good wishes.

Jim

Hi Tara, welcome to the group.

Atkins is one of the more popular lowcarb eating plans and quite a few
people here use it now or have used it in the past.  Many people have
done well with it, but not everybody gets exactly the same results.
But I'd say the majority the people who posted here said that lowcarb
eating meant little to no hunger for them, so your odds are good in
that regard.  And yes, that makes sticking with the plan much easier.

As others have pointed out, this isn't an "eat as much as you want"
diet.  It's an "eat until you are no longer hungry, then stop" diet.
People can WANT food for a lot of reasons beside hunger.  It may be
ingrained habit, it might be boredom, or they just enjoy the taste and
so on.  Let hunger be your guide.  If you are actually hungry, then
eat.  If you're not hungry, don't eat.

There are a few individuals whose posts here seem to have little if
anything to do with support for those on a lowcarb eating plan. The
same thing happens in other newsgroups, it's a universal thing.  You
can read the posts and make up your own mind about them.

Tara, this diet is pretty tough at first, but it gets better the longer you
are on it. It is designed to break your sugar dependence--and we all have
that even as we might be unaware of the problem.

People face many temptations to quit during the first two weeks. If you can
last out 2 weeks---just 14 days!---you can be successful. So, tell yourself
that you will not quit for 14 days. After that, reassess what you think
about the diet. Make a pact with yourself that you will not quit for 2
weeks, no matter what. And stick to that determination.
