The good news is that I'm exercising again (finally) and am losing weight
(how do I know? People are saying, "You look thinner"). The "bad" news
is that wife is due to give birth in early August. This is bad because
that throws my five-day-per-week workout schedule right out the window. I
have to say that regardless of diet, I've never been able to lose weight
without exercise. Part of that is my job, which is completely and utterly
sedentary. Has anyone been able to lose weight without exercise? If so,
how'd you do it?
I do note that I'm going to try to continue to workout after the baby is
born. However, I have no idea (as this is my first child) as to how much
I'll be able to workout.

I'll try, although I've heard that your lack of sleeps prevents you from
doing much! ;-)
The good news is that wife would also like to get back into shape after
the child is born.

Actually babies are a good example of progressive resistance...
(hopefully) they'll increase in weight every week.

Might get a tad rough to benchpress them once they turn 16 years old
or so. ;)

Right...
... but if you start them doing the plank early enough they
~could~ be pressed... IF you could talk them into it.

My SIL participated in the Run For Life pushing a stroller with her
twins in it.
She lost a hundred pounds the year before she got preggers and was
pretty determined to get back in shape again after my nephews were
born. And she raised a lot of money for breast cancer research
also.
She's one heck of a woman.

Wow. I'm not sure I could do that, though, as jogging = injury for me.
Nonetheless, that's impressive.

Cubit does it and does a good job of it. He counts calories and simply
keeps to low carb and low cal.

Interesting. I'll have to see what develops when Coco Lopez comes out!
(Coco Lopez is the name we've chosen until the baby arrives; it's a
sugared coconut oil product used in the Virgin Islands; mmmm...sugar AND
fat!)

Good station.

Yes, by low-carbing. I've lost weight while getting virtually no
exercise by sticking to the diet, and I've maintained or gained weight
while getting large amounts of exercise, because I was cheating on the
diet at the time. Keep your carbs low enough that your insulin
production stays low and your glucagon production stays high, and you
should lose weight. Maybe not as fast as you were when you were
working out regularly, but then again, you might be surprised.

I lost 50lbs doing low carb (Atkins) and never exercised. It took me about 9
months.

I can't lose weight too if I don't exercise or be active.
The alternative is to eat lesser which I am not willing. So eating
well and exercising is a good combination.
All I do to lose weight is to walk moderately briskly (4 miles per
hour) every weekday for 1/2 to 1 hour while on my Low Carb, Low Fat,
High Fibre, High Protein.

I've always exercised to some extent during times when I've lost weight.
Mostly rather moderately. Right now I'm doing almost exactly what you do - I
walk for a half-hour or so on the trails in my local park. Relaxing and it
seems to help.
I also think it's good to do some resistance exercise. Nothing major, just
something to work the major mucle groups a couple times a week. I have some
equipment, so I'll use my TotalGym or dumbbells. Or sometimes a video. I try
to do some yoga/stretching regularly, too. It all works together to help, I
think.
Oddly, I've noticed that during periods where I've exercised more heavily
(all day hiking in the mountains, long-distance cycling in the hills) I
haven't lost weight. Not sure why, but there it is.

IMO, heavy exercise does not promote weight loss because the body demands
lots of energy input in order to sustain it. It's hard to balance output
against intake and you need to be very aware of the kinds of foods you're
eating vs the kinds of activity you're doing.
IMO, for weight loss, moderate exercise is far, far better. That way, one
can better balance intake against output.
For me, long-distance cycling is hills is for fun (pain is fun, btw)!
