Iain - 06 Jun 2007 16:00 GMT I found the one newsgroup I went to unbelievable with all the responses that the trolls were receiving - frequently from the same people, so maybe they should be considered trolls as well!
Also the responses are being sent to all the same (and rather peculiar) mix of newsgroups.
Please don't feed the trolls, or you may be killfiled as well.

Hey - Where is this newsgroup that you're talking about? I'd like to see this odd behavior myself.
Thanks!

Experts said the unusually powerful attacks lasted as long as 12 hours but passed largely unnoticed by most computer users, a testament to the resiliency of the Internet. Behind the scenes, computer scientists worldwide raced to cope with enormous volumes of data that threatened to saturate some of the Internet's most vital pipelines.
The Homeland Security Department confirmed it was monitoring what it called "anomalous" Internet traffic.
"There is no credible intelligence to suggest an imminent threat to the homeland or our computing systems at this time," the department said in a statement.
The motive for the attacks was unclear, said Duane Wessels, a researcher at the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis at the San Diego Supercomputing Center. "Maybe to show off or just be disruptive; it doesn't seem to be extortion or anything like that," Wessels said.
Other experts said the hackers appeared to disguise their origin, but vast amounts of rogue data in the attacks were traced to South Korea.

John 3:18 (NASB95)
18 "aHe who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of bthe 1only begotten Son of God.
[1]
3:18 Now all mankind is divided into two classes: either believers or unbelievers. Our eternal destiny is determined by the attitude we take toward the Son of God. The one who trusts the Savior is not condemned, but the one who does not trust Him is condemned already. The Lord Jesus has finished the work of salvation, and now it is up to each individual to decide whether he will accept Him or reject Him. It is a terrible thing to reject such a gift of love. If a man will not believe on the Lord Jesus, God can do nothing else but condemn him. [2]
Why don't people come to the light? It is not because they don't believe the gospel intellectually or because they struggle with it philosophically. Please remember this the next time you're involved in a discussion with those who attempt to undermine your faith. The issue is never evolution, Cain's wife, or the Immaculate Conception. According to Jesus, the one and only reason people don't come to the Light is because they prefer darkness.[3]
3:18 The person who believes in Jesus escapes condemnation (cf. 5:24; Rom. 8:1). However the person who does not believe in Jesus stands condemned already with no way of escape (cf. 3:36). The reason for his or her condemnation then becomes his or her failure to believe on the One whom God lovingly and graciously has provided for salvation. Faith is the instrumental means by which we obtain salvation. Failure to exercise faith in Jesus will result in spiritual death just as failure to believe in the brazen serpent resulted in physical death for the Israelites (Num. 21:4-9). The difference between belief and unbelief is clear from here on in this Gospel.[4]

I used to tell the people of my church that I use the Bible as a Geiger counter. A Geiger counter tells you whether or not there is uranium there in the rocks and in the soil. So I just run the Geiger counter over the congregation, and the Bible is what I use-it's my Geiger counter. I want to tell you, God's children will always respond to it. That was my confidence as a pastor, and that is my confidence as I write this book: God's people are going to hear. And, my friend, I do not expect the other crowd to hear. If they don't want to hear it, all they have to do is close this book. The Christian ministry does not depend upon them for support; God's people are to support God's work. After all, the ark of the covenant was carried on the shoulders of the priests of Israel. The ark speaks of Christ, and if we are to take Him to the world, we must carry Him on our shoulders. The supreme encouragement of the ministry is to know that God's children will hear you. The elect cannot permanently be deceived. Christ said it is not possible to deceive the elect.
John was sure of who the Lord Jesus was. He could say, "And the Word was made [became] flesh, and dwelt [pitched His tent] among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). Then John gave us the purpose of his gospel: "And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name" (John 20:30-31). John had indubitable, indestructible, inevitable evidence that Jesus was who He claimed to be. John knew that, and that is something we need to be a little more sure of today.

In case you haven't noticed, "worldview" is a very hot topic among evangelical Christians from all communions of the household of faith. Every day sees new articles and books, more opportunities for conferences and seminars, innovative courses and curriculum, and established institutions and ministries of all kinds jumping on the worldview bandwagon. Over the past ten years, the followers of Christ have begun to consider more carefully the far-reaching implications of His Lordship.
Which, of course, is a very good development. It will take a generation or so for the seeds that are today being sown to take solid root and begin to flourish, but if this widespread sowing of worldview sentiments continues, we can expect, in the generation to come, a profusion of new and exciting expressions of biblical Christianity, penetrating and bearing fruit in virtually every area of human life and interest. The prospect is truly exciting. The breadth and depth at which Christian worldview thinking is being sown should cause us to rejoice, and to pray that God would bring revival and reformation as the harvest.
At the same time, the present interest in worldview is creating some confusion. For some people the very word-"worldview"-suggests a subject so arcane and academic that they want nothing to do with it. For others, the profusion of worldview resources and opportunities makes it difficult to determine which is the best way of thinking about, or working to construct, a Christian worldview. It's easy to get lost in the jumble of terms and topics. It can be difficult to understand the method of some worldview thinkers. And there's just so much to read, so much information flooding the bookstores and Web pages, that it's hard to know when you've read enough, or whether what you're reading is as reliable as it ought to be.
We can be grateful that, when the Lord chose His first disciples, He did not select any academics or philosophers. He chose humble men with hearts for God, men who would be able, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, to grasp profound truths and communicate them in the simplest of terms.
And of those first disciples, John shows the keenest ability to capture the sublime and convey it to simple people like us. His gospel, epistles, and Revelation communicate the sum and substance of the Christian worldview with captivating narratives, meaning-laden terms, and compelling images. John, the humble fisherman, can provide us with a map for Christian worldview thinking that will enable us to stand firmly on the ground of Christian worldview and work with its grist to create things beautiful, true, and good.
A key text for understanding Christian worldview according to the Apostle John is 1 John 4. If we will listen to John, and learn from him, we will be well prepared to enter the worldview conversation that the Spirit of God is conducting today within the Body of Christ.
. THE GROUND FOR CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW
The ground of Christian worldview is the foundational perspective from which the follower of Christ looks out on the world, understands his place in it, takes up his callings and burdens, and seeks the kingdom of God as the first priority of life. John tells us that the ground of Christian worldview is the incarnation of Jesus Christ: "By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God" (vv. 2, 3). In the Christian worldview we take our stand on the incarnation of Jesus Christ, and all that implies. This is our starting point, and this is where we always return. John suggests three implications of the incarnation of Christ for the Christian worldview.
First, the incarnation of Jesus implies that God exists, that He cares about the world in its frail and fallen estate, and that only a dramatic initiative on His part can overcome the desperate plight of humankind. Jesus came to earth as the Word of God, sent from God, but, at the same time, God Himself. He entered the time/space continuum in which we live and move and have our being in order to introduce a new reality to our wretched condition, the reality of the Kingdom of God-His own rule over the cosmos unto a new creation, progressively, and in due course.
The Christian worldview begins with the understanding that human beings and the world they inhabit are in need of new hope, a new message, a new beginning, and new resources to help them overcome their habitual ways of wantonness, warfare, and waste. Jesus came from eternity into time, from God to humanity, as the Word of God, the power and message of life through death, forgiveness through judgment, and hope through despair. With Jesus' life, death, resurrection, and ascension, the work God planned for the redemption of the world has begun in earnest. It will be brought to its completion in due course, when Jesus, who was once incarnated among us, comes again to take us unto Himself, that we may be with Him and like Him (1 John 3:2).
(1 John 3:2 NASB)
2 ?a?Beloved, now we are ?b?children of God, and ?c?it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He ?d?appears, we will be ?e?like Him, because we will ?f?see Him just as He is.
[3]
3:2 However, understood or not, now we are children of God, and this is the guarantee of future glory. It has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we do know that when Christ is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. This does not mean that we will be physically like Jesus in heaven. The Lord Jesus will have His own definite appearance, and will bear the scars of Calvary throughout eternity. Each of us, we believe, will have his own distinct features and will be recognizable as such. The Bible does not teach that everyone will look alike in heaven. However, we will be morally like the Lord Jesus Christ. We will be free from the possibility of defilement, sin, sickness, sorrow, and death.
And how will this marvelous transformation be accomplished? The answer is that one look at Christ will bring it to pass. For we shall see Him as He is. Here in life, the process of becoming like Christ is going on, as we behold Him by faith in the word of God. But then the process will be absolutely complete when we see Him as He is: for to see Him is to be like Him.
[4]
In the second place, the incarnation of Jesus implies the present reign of the Spirit of God, as He works to advance the kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy on earth, as it is in Heaven (Romans 14:17; Matthew 6:10). God who came down among us in the person of the Word, Jesus Christ, continues among us in the person of the Holy Spirit. His ministry, as John explains it, is to advance truth against error (v. 6), to overcome the darkness of sin and unbelief with the light of life and truth (1 John 2:8), to empower human beings to live for God and eternity, and to help us escape the snares of all that is merely mortal and mundane (1 John 2:15-17).
(1 John 2:15-17 NASB)
. Do Not Love the World
15 Do not love ?a?the world nor the things in the world. ?b?If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, ?a?the lust of the flesh and ?b?the lust of the eyes and ?c?the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.
17 ?a?The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who ?b?does the will of God lives forever.
[5]
2:15, 16 We are plainly warned not to love the world or the things that are in the world, for the simple reason that love for the world is not compatible with love for the Father. All that the world has to offer may be described as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. The lust of the flesh refers to such sensual bodily appetites as proceed from within our evil nature. The lust of the eyes applies to such evil desires as may arise from what we see. The pride of life is an unholy ambition for self-display and self-glory. These three elements of worldliness are illustrated in the sin of Eve. The tree was good for food; that is the lust of the flesh. The tree was pleasant to the eyes; that is the lust of the eyes. It was a tree to be desired to make one wise; this describes the pride of life.
As the devil is opposed to Christ, and the flesh is hostile to the Spirit, so the world is antagonistic to the Father. Appetite, avarice, and ambition are not of the Father, but of the world. That is, they do not proceed from the Father, but find their source in the world. Worldliness is the love for passing things. The human heart can never find satisfaction with things.
2:17 The world is passing away, and the lust of it. When a bank is breaking, smart people do not deposit in it. When the foundation is tottering, intelligent builders do not proceed. Concentrating on this world is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. So wise people do not live for a world that is passing away. But he who does the will of God abides forever. It is the will of God that delivers us from the temptation of passing things. This, incidentally, was the life verse of D. L. Moody, the great evangelist, and is inscribed on his tombstone: "He who does the will of God abides forever."
[6]
. GOD VS. THE EVIL WORLD
John warned believers not lo love this world and its selfish pleasures. Christians stand in a war zone. The battle takes place here on earth as the spiritual forces of God battle against those of Satan. While God allows Satan to rule over the earth through the minds of those in rebellion against God, Satan's kingdom will one day be destroyed. Christians live in this world but are not of it. Satan hates Christians' detachment and attempts to make life as difficult as possible for Christ's followers. To give in to the senseless lust for possessions and power, to spend money on selfish desires and foolish upgrades in cars, clothes, homes, and equipment while ignoring the needs of others is to lose the cosmic war to Satan. So, Christian, know that Satan wars against you, and remember that you represent the winning side.
Reference Verse (quoted from nrsv)
Matthew 6:24 " 'No one can serve two masters: for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.' "
John 12:31 " 'Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.' "
John 14:30 " 'I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of world is coming. He has no power over me.' "
John 15:18 " 'If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you.' "
Ephesians 6:11-12 "Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, aganst the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places."
James 4:4 "Adulterers! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wish to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God
1 John 2:16 "For all that is in the world-the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches-comes not from the Father but from the world."
1 John 3:1 "See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God: and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him."
1 John 4:4 "Little children, you are from God, and have conquered them; for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."
1 John 5:19 "We know that we are God's children, and that the whole world lies under the power of the evil one."
[7]
Because Jesus Christ came among us, and has returned to God, the Spirit of God is now at large in the world, striving with men and women so that they might turn to the Lord (Genesis 6:3), bringing the gift of forgiveness and life to all who believe in Jesus (Galatians 4:6; John 1:12), teaching the things of God to His children (1 Corinthians 2:12,13; 1 John 2:26,27), bringing forth in them fruit and gifts for loving service to others (Galatians 5:22,23; 1 Corinthians 12:7-11), and empowering them as living witnesses to the enthroned Christ and His unfolding kingdom of grace (Acts 1:8; Psalm 110:1-3). So as we take our stand on the ground of Jesus' incarnation, we also embrace the present work of the Spirit of God as He labors among us to will and do of God's good pleasure in the unfolding of His kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy (Philippians 2:12,13; Romans 14:17). The Spirit bears witness to Jesus, and He forms Jesus in us, thus further extending the ground of Christian worldview (Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 3:12-18).
But third, the incarnation of Jesus as the ground of Christian worldview implies an authoritative message concerning what is true and good and what is not. That message, John says, was entrusted to the apostles, who were sent from God (v. 6), inspired by Him (2 Peter 1:19-21), and commissioned to interpret the Scriptures and add to them what God required for the building of His holy temple and chosen people, the Church (Ephesians 2:19-22).
What the apostles have written is the Word of God (2 Peter 3:15,16), and we must be careful, in developing our Christian worldview, not to go beyond their words, or the interpretations they have provided, lest we become harbingers of error rather than truth (1 Corinthians 4:6; 1 John 4:6). God has come among us; God continues among us; and God has given us His written and authoritative Word, once for all delivered to the saints (Jude 3) and kept intact by the Spirit in the hands of faithful guardians and teachers from age to age (Isaiah 40:8).
====================
The ground, the basis and foundation, for all Christian worldview thinking and living is Jesus Christ, as revealed in the Word of God and taught by the Spirit in the context of His kingdom. Unless we take our stand here, and are careful to refer all our thinking to this as our touchstone and base, we run the risk of drifting into confusion and error.
====================
. THE GRIST OF CHRISTIAN WORLDVIEW
But if the incarnation of Jesus Christ is the ground of Biblical worldview-where we take our stand and pitch our tent-then love is the grist of all such thinking. The grist is the finely ground grain produced from all that grinding and milling. With the grist you can make many wonderful, profitable things. In the same way, the grist with which the substance and profit of the Christian worldview come to expression is love-love for God, and love for our neighbors (vv. 7-12).
Believers are like raw, dried corn. We need to be ground and milled by God before we will be good for anything in this world. We must be broken down, purified-all the chaff removed-and prepared for His use. God "puts us through the mill" in a variety of ways: spiritual disciplines, temptations and trials, the teaching and preaching of faithful servants, the demands of our callings, and the kindness of others. He applies the Rock of Christ and the Stone of His Word to the hard shells of our souls, breaking away everything that is unprofitable and preparing us for His use as the bearers of His love. We will know that our Christian worldview thinking has begun to bear fruit when we find ourselves ready and active in loving God and others in selfless, serving ways.
It doesn't matter which aspect of the Christian worldview you are considering. The operative force, as well as the goal and outworking of it all, is love. In the Christian worldview, Paul tells us, the only thing that matters is faith working through love (Galatians 5:6).
(Galatians 5:6) NASB
6 For in ?a?Christ Jesus ?b?neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but ?c?faith working through love.
[8]
5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. NIV Notice how Paul built his arguments. In 5:2 and here he clearly made the point that circumcision had no benefit for salvation. In 5:4 he stressed the point that seeking justification by any other way than by having faith in Christ was falling away from grace. Then he added the flip side: Being uncircumcised was not a barrier to salvation. Paul stressed the serious state of church members who fall away. Today we must be alert to church people who listen to teachers from cults. We must avoid anyone who dilutes or diminishes Christ's work in guaranteeing our salvation.
. BELIEVERS' TRUE IDENTITY IN CHRIST
Romans 3:24 We are justified (declared "not guilty" of sin).
Romans 8:1 We await no condemnation.
Romans 8:2 We are set free from the law of sin and death.
1 Corinthians 1:2 We are sanctified and made acceptable in Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 1:30 We are righteous and holy in Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:22 We will be made alive at the resurrection.
2 Corinthians 5:17 We are new creations.
2 Corinthians 5:21 We receive God's righteousness.
Galatians 3:28 We are one in Christ with all other believers.
Ephesians 1:3 We are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
Ephesians 1:4 We are holy, blameless, and covered with God's love.
Ephesians 1:5-6 We are adopted as God's children.
Ephesians 1:7 We are forgiven-our sins are taken away.
Ephesians 1:10-11 We will be brought under Christ's headship.
Ephesians 1:13 We are marked as belonging to God by the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 2:6 We have been raised up to sit with Christ in glory.
Ephesians 2:10 We are God's work of art.
Ephesians 2:13 We have been brought near to God.
Ephesians 3:6 We share in the promise in Christ.
Ephesians 3:12 We can come with freedom and confidence into God's presence.
Ephesians 5:29-30 We are members of Christ's body, the church.
Colossians 2:10 We have been given fullness in Christ.
Colossians 2:11 We are set free from our sinful nature.
2 Timothy 2:10 We will have eternal glory.
[9]
The Apostle John would certainly agree. Are we talking about the Christian view of home and family? The goal of all our conversation is the promotion of love for God and our family. Has our discussion turned to politics and government? The arts and education? Ethics and the marketplace? In any and every segment of the worldview conversation the believer seeks the end of love, love which does no harm to our neighbor and brings no dishonor to God, but which seeks to edify those around us and exalt Him who has called us to Himself.
Love covers a multitude of sins. Love always thinks the best of others. Love bears all things and seeks to do every good work. Love reflects the divine affection for the cosmos and invites others into fellowship with their Creator. Love overcomes everything. Love is the grist from which marriages are renewed and families are restored. Love is the grist which brings trust and fairness to the marketplace, justice and compassion to the community, honesty and integrity to the halls of government, and beauty and goodness to the arts. No wonder this is the only proper end of Christian worldview.
====================
So the beginning and end of Christian worldview-the ground and grist of all that encompasses this exciting conversation-is incarnate love: the love of God incarnate in Jesus Christ, and the love of Christ incarnate to the world through those who are seeking His Kingdom above all else. Hang all your worldview thinking on these two truths, and you won't go wrong.
====================
FOR REFLECTION
How do you think about the subject of Christian worldview? Does it appeal to you? Leave you cold? Should you be thinking differently about it in any way?

Maranatha (1 Cor. 16:22) consists of two Aramean words, Maran'athah, meaning, "our Lord comes," or is "coming." If the latter interpretation is adopted, the meaning of the phrase is, "Our Lord is coming, and he will judge those who have set him at nought." (Comp. Phil. 4:5; James 5:8, 9.) Source: Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary
(1 Corinthians 16:22 NASB)
22 If anyone does not love the Lord, he is to be ?1??a?accursed. ?2??b?Maranatha. [1]
(Revelation 22:20-21 NASB)
20 He who ?a?testifies to these things says, "Yes, ?b?I am coming quickly." Amen. ?c?Come, Lord Jesus.
21 ?a?The grace of the Lord Jesus be with ?1?all. Amen.
[2]
O Lord, come! translates maranatha, an Aramaic expression used by the early Christians. If spaced "maran atha" it means "Our Lord has come," and if spaced "marana tha" it means Our Lord, come! [3]
22:20 Revelation closes with a promise and a blessing. The promise is that the Lord Jesus is coming quickly. As mentioned previously, this could mean soon or suddenly. The hope of a sudden return would not excite the same anticipation or watchfulness as the hope of a soon return. Every redeemed person responds to the blessed hope, "Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!"
GENESIS <====> REVELATION
Creation of heavens and earth (Gen. 1:1). Destruction of heavens and earth (Rev. 20:11b).
Creation of new heavens and new earth (Rev. 21:1).
Start of Satan's reign on earth (Gen. 3:1&ndash7). Satan cast into the Lake of Fire (Rev. 20:10).
Entrance of sin (Gen. 3:1-7). Sin banished (Rev. 21:27).
Pronouncing of the curse on creation (Gen. 3:1-7). The curse removed (Rev. 22:3).
Right to tree of life forfeited (Gen 3:24b). Access to tree of life restored (Rev. 22:2, 19 marg. )
Eviction of man from the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3:24a). Man welcomed back to [Paradise] (Rev. 22:1-7)
Entrance of death into the world (Gen. 2:17; 5:5). Death forever removed (Rev. 21:4).
Marriage of the first Adam (Gen. 4:1) Marriage of the last Adam (Rev. 19:7).
Sorrow comes to mankind (Gen. 3:16) Sorrow eliminated (Rev. 21:4).
22:21 And now we come to the final blessing of this wonderful book of Revelation, and of the word of God. It is a peaceful close to a book filled with the thunders of divine judgment.
John wishes for "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ to be with God's people." There are three interesting variant readings in the manuscripts here.
1. In the critical (NU) text John wishes Christ's grace to all-which hardly fits Revelation's theme of impending wrath on the majority.
2. The traditional (TR, ?KJV?, ?NKJV?) reading is better. Christ's grace is wished to "you all"-many of the hearers and readers of Revelation will be true believers.
3. The best reading in light of the sharp contrasts between saints and sinners in this book is found in the majority text and ?NKJV? margin: "The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all the saints. Amen."

THE TREE OF LIFE
A Topical Study of
Revelation 22:2
It could rightly be said that the Bible is an account of three trees..
The Tree of Life
The Tree of Life was seen at the beginning of human history.
It will be seen again at the end of human history.
It was originally planted in the Garden of Eden.
It will be transplanted into the gardenlike city of the New Jerusalem.
Man chose not to eat of the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden.
Man will eat freely of the Tree of Life in the New Jerusalem.
The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil
Also introduced in the opening chapters of Genesis, the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was the one tree of which Adam and Eve were not to partake. When they disobeyed and ate of the forbidden tree, death and damnation were the result.
The question arises as to why God would place a forbidden tree in the Garden in the first place. I suggest the following reasons..
Choice. Because God is love, He wants a loving relationship with humanity. But true love always demands a choice. Therefore, God said to Adam and Eve, "Because I want to live with you in a love relationship, I will provide you the opportunity to reject Me, to turn your back on Me. Eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil will be a sign to you and to Me that you don't want to maintain a loving relationship with Me." Simply put, without the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, there would be no choice. And without choice love is questionable.
Dependence. Before they ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, Adam and Eve knew only good, because any time they had a question, they went directly to God for the answer. This is the way God created them-not because He wanted to cripple man, but because He wanted to bless man. Yet when man ate of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, he knew good and evil apart from God. He no longer realized he needed a moment-by-moment reliance on the Father. Thus, he became independent-cut off from all the resources and blessings of his Creator.
The same thing happens to us. Even we who love the Lord are vulnerable to saying, "I don't need to be in close communication with the Lord because I've walked with Him for years. I know my Bible; I understand theology; I have experience.
Such was recently the case with me. Feeling I had already heard the word of the Lord regarding an upcoming decision, I was already moving in a certain direction when the Lord stopped me dead in my tracks with the account found in Genesis 22..
Surely you're not that kind of God, Abraham must have thought when he was told to sacrifice his son Isaac on Mount Moriah. But knowing he had heard the word of the Lord, Abraham did, indeed, lay Isaac on the altar and take knife in hand, ready to plunge it into his son's chest.
Suddenly, "The angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven and said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad." (see 22:11, 12).
Perhaps, like me, a number of you have heard the word of the Lord clearly in a Bible study or prayer meeting, through corporate worship, or private devotions. You wrote it in your journal and are now moving in a certain direction in obedience to His word to you. But you must realize that what the Lord wants from you is constant communion with Him. You see, if Abraham hadn't heeded the second word of the Lord-if he had stubbornly sacrificed his son in obedience to the first word of the Lord-he would have made a bloody mess and a very grave mistake.
"Got the word. I'm on my way," we so often say, failing to realize it might change the very next day. How many unnecessary grave mistakes I've made that could have been avoided had I said, "Lord it's not enough to act on what You spoke to me three days ago. I must hear from you constantly."
"But what if I've already made a grave mistake?" you ask.
Go to the third tree..
The Tree of Calvary
The Tree of Calvary covers my mistakes, washes away my arrogance, and cleanses my sin. You see, after offering the sacrifice of His own body for the bloody messes I have made, Jesus arose from the grave to obliterate the grave mistakes I have made.
The word of the Lord for us today is this, precious people: On the path to heaven, we must keep current with the Lord. We can't rely on what we heard yesterday, last week, or a year ago. If you're not receiving what the Spirit says to you today, like Abraham, you could end up making a big mistake.
Turn away from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil-from what you think you know-and begin to feast on the Tree of Life by saying,
. "Before I make my plans for the afternoon, what's Your agenda, Lord?"
. "Lord, how do You want me to parent my five-year-old son today?"
. "Lord, what do You want me to do about the situation at work this morning?"
Let us who love the Bible be those who seek the Lord intimately even as we take in knowledge intellectually. Because of the Tree of Calvary, when we get to heaven, we won't see the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil-only the Tree of Life, from which we will partake freely, enjoying the fruit that will keep us in perfect health and total harmony with our King, our Savior, our Lord Jesus.
But you don't have to wait until then, saint. Heaven can be in your heart today if you'll choose to eat daily from the tree of His direction.
