Hi, its been awhile, and I am still low carbing. I have had no
problems.
I always seem to run into the one who makes me crazy, for example ran
into a raw veggie foods nut, who looked in my cart and did nothing but
blast me. Here is what was said, ohh my, your eating so much fat and
meat. Low carb will kill you. How could you eat all that fat? I did
not say anything, but I am thin, can't gain weight, never felt better,
and the only problem is that I always wonder what is my cholesterol
level? Am I killing myself? I can't eat fruit, cereal, and veggie
only. Why do they make me so nervous about my health.
OHH well ,thanks Marilyn

I think vegetarians are gullible and crazy. I've never known a
vegetarian that grew old. They all died at an early age.

Being beaten to death with a frozen rump roast when they told the wrong
person how to eat?

Depending upon where you live, there may be "community" cholesterol
screenings where for $20 or $30 you can get a full panel of cholesterol
screening done and the results sent to you at home.
Nurses associations sometimes are the sponsor. Your local hospital may
be a lead to how to find out about when and where and how much $ is
involved.
Or, if you have a physician, just ask to have it done, but you may pay a
lot for the lab tests and the doctor's "evaluation" if you do it that way.
Some mail order places will do an automated screening for you. You pay
them some money, they send you a thing that takes the blood, and you
send it back. Some kind of finger pricking device. Sorry, I was given
one and managed to lose it without taking the sample, so I can't give
you any more information.
The way this works is that there is a "cholesterol" meter device which
you can buy and do your own. The meter is expensive, and the sampling
needles are much more expensive than are the glucose things.
-----------------------------------
They make you so nervous about your health because they want to use fear
to make you eat "Their Way", or the Right Way.
It is quite common in the diet game, FUD = Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.
FUD. Works like a charm, doesn't it? You may learn to hate or ignore
users of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt as good manipulators.
You don't want to be manipulated do you? Then do things My Way!
Good Luck in standing off these diet enemies.

Cholesterol is irrelevant anyway.

That guy had a lot of nerve, it's none of his business what's in your cart.
Next time give it right back at him, tell him he will waste away without
enough protein and that he no doubt has vitamin deficiencies without fat in
his diet. Plus he must be miserable if all he has to do is go around and
comment on what other people eat.

Do you want to feel great and look great, or please society? That's
really what it comes down to. Embrace the revolution; push that cart
full of pork rinds up to the checkout counter with pride! :-)

Well, you can have your cholesterol level checked, if feeling great
isn't enough evidence for you. If you do, just make sure you know what
the numbers really mean so the doctor won't be able to scare you with
bad information. HDL is good, triglycerides are bad, and LDL is
meaningless, unless you find out how much of your LDL is light and
fluffy (the good kind) and how much is denser. See Taubes and/or Eades
for more info on that.

That's nice to hear.

So, here is a nut. You describe him as such. Your answer should be
either dismissal ("I'm sure your a nice person, but I don't talk to
food evangelists of any stripe on general principle.") or outrage
("I am sure I would never comment on what's in your bin and you
were not invited to do so on mine.") Correcting their lack of B-12
or Omega3:6 imbalance is not liable to move anything but both
parties blood pressure.

Cholesterol numbers don't mean that much. Too low, and you have
high mortality. Too high, and your mortality goes up. If you want to
know, you should know and ask your doc to do a blood workup. But
it'll only make him/her think statins if you're high, and that's
really
the last thing you want to do.
> Am I killing myself?
Is "never felt better" highly associated with death? I wouldn't know.
I haven't been a smoker. But if you feel healthy and you're not taking
halcyon, then rock on.
> I can't eat fruit, cereal, and veggie

Because they have 30 years of common wisdom that was
flawed from the outset on their side. But if you know that
1- they're working from flawed premises (which they are)
2- that a vegan diet isn't gonna work for you.
3- that you've never felt better
I can't begin to suggest why they make you nervous.

1) Why worry about cholesterol levels when you can get them checked?
2) They don't mean much anywho.
3) The stressed caused by worry ain't good for you.
4) The guy is a moron.
5) No, you're not killing yourself. You just wrote you never felt better.
6) They make you nervous because you don't fully understand [apparently] why
LC is good for you.

Donate blood maybe??? Our local bloodbank does a free screening for donors.
They only provide the one number, no breakdown of LDL, HDL or other
components. From that aspect, this lone number could be dismissed as a
worthless number. OTOH, if you are really that curious, knowing that number
might be enough to satisfy that bug. As a side benefit, you help out your
community. Your local blood bank may offer different complimentary
screenings - just call them up or look them up on the web to see what they
do. If they are anything like our bank, they are ALWAYS desperate for
donors.
BTW, I just gave last week. Before going in, I was debating on whether I
should take them up on their post-donation sugary offerings (OJ, cookies,
crackers, etc) or just pass. My answer was going to depend on how I felt
afterwards. I felt fine - no woozy or dizzy feelings or anything else
signaling low blood sugar, so I took a can of diet pop (soda, soft drink,
whatever you want to call it) and also two little cans of V8. The V8 had 5
net carbs (10 for my two cans). I felt that was a decent carb splurge for
me, and I didn't feel bad afterwards for blowing my carb count for the day.
So, everybody was a winner.
About vegans and "health food" nuts: My sister is a vegan. She doesn't do it
for weight loss or health reasons, she just thinks it is healthier.
Whatever... Anyways, she does her thing, I do mine, we don't rag on each
other for what the other is doing, and life is good. I don't particularly
care for her food choices, and she doesn't care for mine, but we don't get
hung up about it. A complete stranger that is rude enough to make the
comments they did about your shopping cart deserves to be told to shut the
hell up and MTOB, and to also consider etiquette school.

I do not know why these raw veggie people get to me. However, I do
feel good and I guess thats what counts. Thanks again for the re
assurance. I really love reading all your posts!

Why not visit your Dr and have some blood work done? See what your
trigliceride and cholesterol levels are.
