resist temptation at Super Bowl parties

Are you ready to combat Super Bowl diet temptations?
You don't need a reminder to tell you the Super Bowl is coming soon.
Now what's that going to do to your diet?

That's simple. Super Bowl and snack time go together. And for most
people that means all the rules you've set for yourself are "Out the
Window".

But you don't need go out of bounds just because your Super Bowl party
has chips, dips, beer and other party beverages.  Guess what you can
eat and still join in the fun of the party? You can eat and drink
plenty. It just takes some planning ahead.

Just like with most planning, winning at your diet game is mostly a
mental exercise. Like Yogi Berra used to say, "80% of the game is 90%
mental".

It's not a process requiring trips to the health food store or picking
a batch of extra watercress. You can host a party or go to your
friends party and still have fun, enjoy the refreshments and stay
close to your diet program. During this "party period" you may not
lose weight but you won't gain any substantial weight either.

Keep it simple. Go for the low fat and low fat snacks. Try pretzels.
Most parties have them. That doesn't mean you can keep dipping your
hand continuously into the pretzel bowl. If you can make a snack bag
for yourself you can put a measured amount of pretzels (100 to 200
calories worth) and ration them for the length of the game.

If you divide your "authorized snack" into two bags you can save one
for the second half. You'll be surprised how having your own bag of an
"authorized snack" will give you the will power to withstand eating
too much or eating the wrong food or even eating at inappropriate
times.

It's like setting any other kind of goal. In this case goal is making
one snack pack last for an entire half. For your party beverages
choose no-cal soda or water.

And you can yell and scream and cheer your team like everyone. Best of
all water does the same thing as beer. It makes you go to the bathroom
a-lot. You can get bottled with a hint of a variety of flavors and
some even come with vitamins. The real physical specimens, the workout
freaks, the muscle guys drink water with vitamins. Why would you want
to drink anything else? Of course if you're a fan of diet cola or
other diet soft drinks they work too.

So don't choose the chips, the french Fry's and those high fat sour
cream dips. Sure pretzels have lots of salt. But if you can handle
that they can be a low fat alternative to all the other things you
might choose.

Another fine example of an ignoramus, posting to eat pretzels in a LC
newsgroup.

How about pork rinds? I haven't seen them mentioned here in a while.

They are low-carb, and I use them instead of chips. I'll dip them into some
guacamole--and it works for me.

When I get a hankering for a chip-like snack, I'll reach for the pork rinds.

As I watch the numbers on my scale go down, stuff like pretzels don't seem very
important to me.

Yes, I do like pork rinds occasionally. Very good for dipping. I
really liked the microwave pork rinds, but can't find them anymore
since J&J went out of business. They used to carry a different brand
at the local Wal-Mart, but stopped in my area.

Deviled eggs--mix egg yolks with mayo and sprinkle with paprika. I can eat those
all day long.

I like cold cuts and cheese. The cold cuts aren't always that low carb--but
compared to what I used to eat--much better for me.

I like to smoke meats--so I'll have pork ribs and sausage for everyone.

My birthday is the day before--so my friends and family are coming over to the
house on Sunday to see if I'm still alive and to watch the Super Bowl. Another
good thing is that some of the folks haven't seen me since I've lost 35+ lbs.

I'm sure I'll get lots of compliments. 8^)

Easy fake fondue.

Make a cheese sauce in a crockpot.  Serve with brocolli
florrets, celery dipping sticks and several other types of
raw veggie.  Also those little party hot dogs.  Have bread
bits for the carb eaters to use for dipping.

The cheese sauce can be close as you like to real fondue
sauce but it does have to be thinned out enough to work
in a crockpot.

Or since the football is called a pig-skin, pickled pigs
feet should work.  Some will like them, some won't.  More
for me.

Hot wings. Baked parmesan. Baked Brie. Chili. Diet Coke.
The right light beer.

Pretzels? I used to love them but I had to kill them.

Yeah, pork rinds are great for dipping in anything.  They're also a good
cracker replacement when spread with nut butters.

There's a big variation in pork rinds, though.  One brand that's common
around here always has several very hard ones in the bag that I give to
my dog to chew on.  The Baken-ets brand are much better, but harder to
find.

The best ones I've ever had were made by an older couple who travel
around the state in the summertime making them fresh at town picnics.
Theirs are incredibly light and fluffy, with no lardy aftertaste at all.
Someday I want to track down some uncooked pork skin and see if I can
replicate those.

A good social function is a chilli cooking contest.  Some will make
theirs low carb.  It's also possible to make low fat chilli for those
interested in such topics.  Glance at the type, decide if you want
to try that one.  It's a strategy that works fine unless you
volunteered to be one of the judges for the contest.  Or call it an
exhibition then no judges are needed.

This year my approach will be to Tivo the game and fast forward past
that optional stuff that isn't the best commercials of the year.  I
might even notice which teams ended up in the game by the end of
play ...
