Monday morning, I went to LabCorps to have my blood and urine tests
done. They sent me the results by email yesterday afternoon. I have been
on LC since September.

HDL Cholesterol    54
LDL Cholesterol    94
Triglycerides      73
Hemoglobin A1c     4.9

There are 4 pages of test results, but I chose the ones I thought the
group might be interested in.  So, how am I doing, health wise?

My husband was worried that my cholesterol would be through the roof,
but nope, not at all.  :D   My HDL should be a little higher, but I
stopped doing aerobics because of a bone spur in my right foot.
Sonsabitches...  :(

First of all, high cholesterol is not a health risk, only a bad pattern
of ratios.  Your HDL/TGL ratio is great, as is your HDL/LDL ratio.

Your low TGLs and highish HDL are a marker for large, bouyant, non
atherogenic LDL, as opposed to damaging VLDL.  LDL is what all your
adrenal steroids are made from, so you need it to be higher than those
shameless low targets.

My low carb WOE is not much different than I was eating before. I am
eating more vegetables, both raw and cooked, without eating the pasta,
rice, potatoes, bread.

Well, the stuff you stopped eating has proven to be the stuff that
causes atherogenic lipid patterns, so goodonya.  Substituting veggies
for starches actually is a huge difference in macronutrients as a
percentage of total calories.

I love bread, used to eat about 6 to 8 slices a day, whole wheat of course!

I eat 4 a day now, about 12 carbs each, seems to work well.

Bread, I love, but what I miss the most on my WOE, is beans and fruit. I
still have a few pounds to lose, so I am trying to behave.

Black Soybeans,

What's your carb level?  You could probably do some blueberries or
strawberries.

Thanks for the link to black soybeans. I did not realize they had such
few carbs.

When I misbehave on my diet, that is what I eat, berries or melons. I
believe those have the least amount of carbs.  I looked at the amount of
carbs in a banana, and I was surprised that it had 36 carbs.

Becca, there are some good low carb breads now, and black soybeans are
almost completely fiber and protein, virtually zero carb.  I always have
them on hand.

Black soybeans sound pretty good to me.  I used to make a nice black
bean salad, I wonder if I could do that with soybeans?

My next quest, is to find low carb bread.

Yes, in fact a quickie lunch for me is a cup of them with some
vinaigrette.  Chopped red onion and stuff if I feel like it.

There are so many, from my favorite pita, Kontos pocketless low carb
pita or Toufayan low car pitas to Toufayan low carb wraps, Weight
Watchers multigrain bread, The Baker brand flax or multigrain or bran bread.

Lots of options out there.

How about blood sugar levels or Thyroid panel?

What did the lab charge?

Lab tests are usually for fasting blood glucose, which is a pretty
meaningless number unless one has been diabetic for many years.

Post meal numbers could be very informative, though.

My serum glucose was 79 and my A1c was 4.9

Thyroid: TSH 4.538
         Thyroxine (T4) 7.3
         T3 Uptake 28
         Free thyroxine index 2.0

To get more information about my test results, I look here:
http://www.labtestsonline.org/  I find the test, then I click on the
words "The Test".  BTW, if any of your test results are high or low, the
test will make that indication and it is highlighted.  My white blood
cell count was high, but I have a sinus infection, so there ya go. lol

> What did the lab charge?

$89.  http://directlabs.com/

For the past couple of years, I have used DirectLabs and I choose
whatever tests I need.  I pay for the tests, print out the orders and I
take it to LabCorps.  They send me the results by email, in a day or
two. I fast before the tests, so I usually go early in the morning.

I had July's "test of the month", which was $89 for blood and urine. If
you scroll to the bottom of the page you will find it.

What range did they give for the TSH? (I'm not sure what the upper edge
of my lab's range is 4.2 or 4.7, but my doctor prefers me to have it
less than 1, and prescribes thyroid supplementation accordingly.)

According to my test results, the Reference Intervals are:

TSH  0.350 - 5.500
 T4    4.5 - 12.0

I have thyroid lab reports going back almost 10 years (it's not all the
tests that were run; I lost some of the printouts). Until 2002 or so,
the Reference Intervals above were on all the reports. The 4.5-12.0 is
still what I see for T4. However, the current Interval for TSH is
0.27-4.20. One of the missing reports had an alert to this effect, so
that doctors would start treatment at lower levels.

I just googled for TSH reference range, and found this article
http://thyroid.about.com/cs/testsforthyroid/a/newrange.htm indicating
that the change did in fact take place in 2002.

Thanks for the info.  LabCorps has not made these changes, so I may
bring that to their attention when I go back.

My test results are in from yesterday. When compared to September of 2007, they
are pretty good:

Total Cholesterol was 153, now 166
Triglycerides was 153, now 66
HDL Cholesterol was 27, now 41
LDL Cholesterol was 96, now 112
Total Cholesterol/HDL Ratio was 5.7, now 4.0
Fasting Glucose was 126, now 112

I just returned from a business trip where I didn't avoid carbs as much as I
could have. So my numbers would have been even better had I stayed strictly on
the LC course.
