Is it common to feel mildly depressed and irritable when you start a
low carb diet?
I normally felt upbeat, happy, and fairly energetic before I started
dieting and exercising in january. Then for a few weeks I felt mildly
depressed and irritable. I used to have severe depression several
years ago until I started eating a highly nutritious diet and read a
lot of self help books. That cured me until I started this new weight
loss diet. Now I'm feeling pretty OK again.

It's normal to feel a bit jittery, though most folks feel better, not worse.

I became severely depressed years ago on very low carb, but I've been
low carbing for many years without a problem since. It was because low
carb, like very low cal, dramatically lowers active T3 thyroid hormone,
in my case. IIWY, if you're on induction raise it up to about 50-70
grams of carbs per day and see if that helps.
If it doesn't, consider having your free T3 tested.

It might also be seasonal affective disorder given the time of
year it is here in the northern hemisphere. You might buy one of the
blue light boxes and see if it helps. Use it in the morning for
a half hour minimum. YMMV

The first couple of weeks should be considered a
short term detox program. Very common and very
temporary as you have just seen.

Sounds like you could have some problems with hypoglycemia. If that is
your problem, you need to avoid artificial sweeteners. There are
receptors in the upper intestine that sense "sweet" and trigger a
release of insulin. The sensors can't discriminate between sugar and
artificial sweetener. Someone with hypoglycemia is probably an
over-secreter anyway and if that person in on a low-carb diet then they
end up with a lot of insulin in their system and nothing to use it on,
so they end up with chronically low blood sugar and all the symptoms
that go with it, depression being one of the major ones.
