There's already an available combination of filters that
handles nearly all such problems -
1) Discard all messages that are posted to more than one group.
2) Discard all messages that are sourced from the biggest spam
source - google groups.
Of course the people who do such filtering don't see my posts.
It's the price I pay for using google myself.

I also use GG. I don't know why, but for some reason this group has a
lot more spam coming in now than any other group that I follow. Could
be because the spammers think of what they think would be widely
followed groups and key in on the word "diet".
The other obvious issue is the number of real posts has dropped to a
trickly, so the spam really stands out. Still, while it would sure
be nice to see the spam go away, I don't have a huge problem finding
the few real posts either.

Why do you use Google when there are so many free NSPs out there? :-)
Try these. I like Solani.org.
news.solani.org
news.datemas.de
news.tornevall.net
news.motzarella.org
news.albasani.net

The day I find an NSP that has a web interface that supposed
kill file filters is the day I will switch away from google. Until
then it isn't worth switching to some other NSP that also has
a web interface that doesn't support filters. I have tried both
motzarealla and albasani and neither's web interface does.
I originally switched to a browser because I travelled for work
and I never knew if the network-du-jour blocked NNTP. Over
time I lost interest in other types of newsreaders.
recgroups.com *does* have a browser interface that supposed
filtering. It only carried *one* of the groups I follow and it does
not seem to be actively managed. Still, news.groups is a
lot higher quality when I read it there. Not really worth it for
just one newsgroup to me.
