You Are What You Grow

A few years ago, an obesity researcher at the University of Washington
named Adam Drewnowski ventured into the supermarket to solve a mystery.
He wanted to figure out why it is that the most reliable predictor of
obesity in America today is a person¹s wealth. For most of history,
after all, the poor have typically suffered from a shortage of calories,
not a surfeit. So how is it that today the people with the least amount
of money to spend on food are the ones most likely to be overweight?

Drewnowski gave himself a hypothetical dollar to spend, using it to
purchase as many calories as he possibly could. He discovered that he
could buy the most calories per dollar in the middle aisles of the
supermarket, among the towering canyons of processed food and soft
drink. (In the typical American supermarket, the fresh foods ‹ dairy,
meat, fish and produce ‹ line the perimeter walls, while the
imperishable packaged goods dominate the center.) Drewnowski found that
a dollar could buy 1,200 calories of cookies or potato chips but only
250 calories of carrots. Looking for something to wash down those chips,
he discovered that his dollar bought 875 calories of soda but only 170
calories of orange juice. . .

Is stress making you fat?

It is no secret that living in today's society takes a tremendous toll
on our bodies and our health. Many of us find that we are physically,
mentally, and emotionally challenged on a daily basis by everyday
stressors that exist; such as managing a family, maintaining a job, and
dealing with unexpected events that come up. On top of that, many of us
may experience additional stressors such as the loss of a job, financial
strain, the death of a loved one, or even suddenly finding oneself the
primary care giver of an aging parent. Stress often comes at us fast and
furious, often unrelenting which causes us to feel overwhelmed,
exhausted, helpless, hopeless and worn down.

Stress is a normal event that all animals, including humans, experience.
However, what isn't normal is if we become overwhelmed by the stress we
face. The type of stress we encounter today is not the same type as our
distant hunter-gatherer ancestors experienced. The hunter-gatherers
underwent acute stressors, such as running as fast as they could,
scurrying up a tree, to avoid becoming dinner for a hungry saber-toothed
tiger. This type of stress is over and done with once the danger has
passed. Our hunter-gather ancestors would then be able to return to his
or her daily tasks as the danger passed and the stress hormones
dissipated. . .

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading. The few who
learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and
find out for themselves.
