The motherlode at Super Wal-Mart

Edward Gmys - 29 Dec 2003 00:37 GMT I mostly lurk on here but thought I would add this for anyone who might not be aware:
I was just at a Super WalMart (Las Vegas) today and saw the Motherlode of low-carb products. Since September, they had a special shelving unit set up in the aisle that separates the food from the regular part of the store that had been used for baking goods for the holidays. Today, both sides of it were loaded with low-carb products, a lot of stuff I had never seen before. Almost the entire Atkins line was there including the cereals, crunchers, and pasta meals. There were snacks that looked like corn chips that I had never seen before, I think by a company called CarbFit. There were two or three different brands of pasta, and all kinds of other products like sugar-free Kool-Aid and Star-Kist Tuna. There was a lot of thought put into this display!
I also saw that they are already carrying the Weight Watcher's LC frozen meals. They call them the "The Truth About Carbs" meals.

Dogstar - 29 Dec 2003 05:52 GMT They also have sugar-free peach gelatin under their own brand. Jello doesn't make peach s/f at all, so I loved finding it at WM. Only get to the Las Vegas one (there's none in S. CA) a few times a year, so stocked up.

So they dont go looking for the wrong thing.
Walmart has what are called Walmart Supercenters. Kmart has what are called Super Kmart's.
And thanks for the update on the low carb at walmart. Unfortunately, nothing like that in canada.
Lew - 29 Dec 2003 14:06 GMT I can back up this marvelous development,..
I have now seen in three Wal-Mart Supercenters (Mobile, AL; Burlington, IA; and Peachtree City, GA) a whole new Atkins/Low-Carb section. Generally on the edge of the grocery section in the far side of the store, about 20 feet from where the milk fridges are (where, btw, they have Carb Countdown milk), they have installed a 20' long, 6' wide, 10' tall set of shelves that are loaded with low-carb stuff. Candy, cookies, mixes, cereals, etc. The best selection I've seen so far.
They even have the new Carbolite chocolate coconut bar that is an exact duplicate of an Almond Joy but without the almonds. Truly tasty.
Things are looking up.

Nastyhaggis - 29 Dec 2003 17:53 GMT I can confirm a massive Low Carb display at the Super Wal Mart in Johnson City, TN as well.
Cyndi - 29 Dec 2003 18:07 GMT There's two Super Walmarts here in Davenport Iowa, both have the special little "Low Carb" section.. but I'm staying away from it.. its meat and lettuce for me folks LOL

Jack - 29 Dec 2003 22:14 GMT Kirksville Missouri Super Wal-Mart has the new low carb section too and 3 kinds of low carb bread and 3 kinds of low carb milk, by the way that milk had lots of stuff added into it when I read the ingredients.
For me I'll stick to the known quantities until I get beyond where I am now with this. But is good to see the products filtering down even here in very rural Missouri.

in poplar bluff mo super walmart has a small section in a regular food isle. has the mixes, bbq sauce chip, etc. no bread. the drink mixes are on the other side of the store by shampoos & OTC meds. di vinci syrup, sf vanilla, is by the coffee.
the one health food store out here s a betterselectin & sells atkins bagel which are very very good. they sell the rye bread too
MEKIESS - 29 Dec 2003 22:46 GMT There are several SuperWalmarts in the Des Moines Iowa area, but so far I haven't seen a "low carb" section. I'll ask the grocery manager about it!
Bob Peterson - 29 Dec 2003 22:52 GMT the one near me has low carb stuff in a couple of places, one next to the vitamin aisle, and the other a small area in the grocery section. I am hopeful they will add a larger low carb area. they also have a few LC frozen dinners. I tried a couple of them and they are pretty good.
I think the poster that said to remember that LC junk food is still junk food had it right though, I have really been going through the LC chocolate lately. I should probably cut back.

When are you and the others going to do another Vegas get together?
Good luck this time and stick with it!!!

Ronald Kritner - 30 Dec 2003 04:03 GMT the ones that do not have the new "lowcarb" section yet, just like you described it, even the same area, will surely have one soon because we live in a small town, Scottsboro, Alabama and starting stocking our special shelving unit the day after Christmas, ours is just like you described, even LC SlimFast, imagine that. LCer09 - 31 Dec 2003 03:01 GMT My Wal-Mart has the section up, but it's pretty sad IMHO. No beer or peach jello, just a bunch of Atkins and Carbolite products, mixed with stuff like Balance and Luna bars, and even muffin mix! (regular Betty Crocker mix, not LC) I don't think anybody there has a clue as to what's low-carb or not.

Here I saw all kinds of stuff, food and drink, all low carb. Much of it was labeled LC and the Atkins shakes and stuff were there, but it also had some naturally LC items as well. And not a hint of any high carb items in the stack.
The stock manager here definitely did his (her?) homework.

I'll stick to Nutrawize a >> good bakery style bread at 1 gram. > > http://shop.store.yahoo.com/hspharmacy/nulowcabr.html Unless it doesn't like my browser, all I could see there was a little photo of Nutrawize, no ingredients or nutrition info. I'm pretty skeptical that any faux bread could be 1g per slice, especially if it isn't really horrid.
However, the exact same photo for your Nutrawize bread link is shown at Atkinscenter for one of their breads (doesn't say Nutrawize, though), listing 8g per slice, 5g fiber, with a net 3g. They sell it frozen. http://atkins.com/shop/products/Sliced_Bread_Duet.html
*If* Nutrawize is the same bread that Atkins relabels and sells frozen (before they started the recent fresh Atkins supermarket bread), then I found it to be completely tasteless with a texture like foam rubber. And the loaves always seem to have been squashed before they were frozen.

Bob Peterson - 01 Jan 2004 18:22 GMT I found some LC bagels too. Haven't eaten them yet, but they are like 7 or 8 grams per bagel, and only $2 for the package.
Several varieties of LC bread, but most of them seem to have a lot more carbs than Atkins, and I like the taste of Atkins breads. I have 5 loaves in the freezer right now so won't be needing any new bread for quite a while. Maybe Wally world will start stocking Atkins bread too, would be nice not to have to pay the crazy shipping charges.

The Fortune article that I posted a few days back stated that Wal-Mart plans to start carrying a lot more LC products and they are even in negotiations to start their own brand (I guess the Sam's Best or whatever it is) low-carb products. I think it mentioned that the Keto line is going to be carried in Walmarts too.
Looks like the people who started online lowcarb stores probably only have another year at best of sales before lowcarbers starting getting all their stuff from Walmart and local grocery stores!

It did have a little section in front with low-carb items. Mostly Atkins and not that interesting. Oddly enough, they still had other things scattered around throughout the store. I might have gotten the "honey" (maltitol) and some frozen meals, but my daughter reminded me I don't want to shop there.

Meat and vegetables are of course always available. There's a limited supply of sugar-free stuff sweets in most supermarkets, but there are no stores that specialise in low carb goods. I've occasinally stumbled on shiritake noodles, but they're fairly hard to find.
I have yet to see anything like LC bread or pasta. It's very difficult to get pork rinds (two brands that I know of, only one of them is available at a very small number of supermarkets and contains MSG, the other is only available by direct order from the manufacturer, but is apparently lighter and more like what you get in the US. Only one flavour - salty!).

I'm not sure what the brand is (I vaguely think there's something like "luscious fruits" on the bag) but there are some lovely sweets that come in fruit flavours, like the Fruit Burst sweets, that also have licorice, mint and caramel chews in their range - sounds like it might be the same crowd. They're lovely! :o)
My partner loves his SF sweets, so there's usually some at home. I'm not so fussed - I prefer chocolate!
