Luna - 05 Jan 2004 22:41 GMT Ok, NEVER again will I take such a long break from exercise, I don't care how sick I get. I had not been there since the 19th of December and the workout today just about killed me. It was really hard! I hope I get back in shape quickly. On the plus side, I lost 3 pounds since I was there last, probably from not eating when I was sick. I must have lost even more than that initially, because since I got my appetite back I've been eating a lot.

From the way it feels, it feels like the machines are easier the slower I go. The faster I try to go, the more reps I try to do in the 30 seconds, the harder it is. So I suppose I'm adjusting it myself by how hard I push.

Nah, you're just supposed to go as hard as you can while keeping your heart-rate in the proper range for your age. I've found that I can usually guess where my heart-rate is before I do a check, based on how hard I'm breathing. I was breathing hard while not being able to do as many reps as I could before my break, but I didn't push myself to where my heart-rate was too hard.

Well, I don't know if this counts as "counselling" me but when I came in I told Jillian I hadn't been there in a while, that I had been sick, and she said "Take it easy today, you might feel pretty weak, and we don't want you pushing yourself too hard." I guess that does count, but she wouldn't have known I hadn't been there in a while if I hadn't told her, and she didn't give me any specific advice about _how_ easy to take it. I don't think I really needed any advice about it, it's kind of a no-brainer. If my heart-rate goes too high according to the chart on the wall, if I start to feel dizzy or nauseated, if I'm breathing so hard I can't talk, then, duh, I slow down.

Look, I'm not knocking you or Curves, I understand their limitations, I come from a different world where keeping up daily with clients, and changing their training many times right on the floor during session, s the only way I know how to do things.
I don't, for the life of me, understand why it is so hard (it isn't) and why Curves or anyone else for that matter can't be more attentive.

You understand this living in and with Atlanta traffic. Being on the "other side" of the road can mean "too much trouble to get too".

I usually go mid-afternoon, 2 or 3 ish, not much traffic then. And there's a Publix right there where I can go buy dinner if I didn't have time to make it before I left home, AND there's a Barnes & Noble where I can get something to read at work. I hate driving, so it's nice to have everything right there.

how much more school do you have before you can get your degree?

I already have an associate's degree in theater, and I do freelance tech work, but I have not been able to get a steady job doing that. I honestly can't think of any job I'm qualified for outside of set building and props, that I wouldn't hate. Anyway, I never said I hate my current job, I love the people I work with, I have the best boss ever, and that makes up for a lot of the other stuff.

there are also other alternatives to saving up for school...don't wait too long to get started on that. i didn't go back to school until i was 33, and i'm really glad i did, but i wish i had started sooner.

Oh, I am still looking for other jobs. Of course, I'm probably not looking as hard as I should, since I don't feel that panicky feeling you get when you don't have a job at all, but every week I send out at least 3 resumes in response to ads, and once a month or so I'll get called in for an interview, but so far no luck other than the freelance jobs.

Since the 19th of December!!!!!!! That's over 2 weeks of being sick. Sounds like excuse time to me unless you had pneumonia or something. You found out that it hurts to work out once you take a long break. Much easier to keep at it. Don't be discouraged. You'll get right back where you were as long as you keep going. And at some point consider joining another gym [preferably using free weights instead of those wacky Curves machines] You'll progress so much quicker it'll blow you away.

I was sick for most of September and didn't work out for over 2 weeks.

That's great for you, congrats, but I'm not you. I did have a fever for over a week, and I was still coughing pretty badly up until Saturday. Maybe you'd go work out and cough all over the equipment that other people are about to use, but I thought it would be rude. Also, have you ever coughed so hard that it feels like you pulled an abdominal muscle? It hurt just to breathe, still hurts if I breathe hard, but I'm doing it anyway.

All I wanted to say was really think about why you aren't going and not use sickness as an excuse. If you have the sniffles, feel a bit off, or even have a mild cough that isn't really a good reason to stay away from the gym in my book. Sometimes I go into the gym feeling like crap and wondering why I'm bothering, but by the time I get out of there I feel great.

After the fever was gone I felt better, up to going back to work and stuff, but I still had a lingering cough and a lot of abdominal pain when I coughed (I think I pulled something coughing) up until Saturday. I didn't want to work out while coughing because heavy breathing made the coughing worse, plus, it's gross to be coughing all over everything in a public place, even if I wasn't contagious anymore.
