I have responded to several messages requesting information and then got a
response that the message was undeliverable because the address was no good.
It takes a bit of energy to create a good answer, and I see no use in going
to that trouble for people who do not really want a reply. If that is the
case, please say so in your message or indicate that your address is good.
In the meantime I am convinced that the energy required to create a reply is
not well spent and shall therefore do so no further.
This is not what I thought a news group was all about. Does anyone run this
one, keep an eye on such things?

When you hit reply, it goes to the newsgroup. If you can't
send to the newsgroup, the problem is at your end. Don't hit
reply-all, just reply. If that doesn't work, you might be
reading news from a site that is read-only.

No, it's an unmoderated newsgroup. Why not just reply to the group, instead
of sending private email? Folks who post their questions here should expect
to find their answers here, and if you post them here everyone can benefit
from your carefully crafted answer.
For what it's worth, I use a "real" email address on my header (though it's
an account I only use for USENET and commercial sites, overrun with spam,
precisely because I have used it to post to USENET), but I don't generally
care to get drawn into side discussions in email. I post to the group in
order to have discussions with the group. Just one data point for you.

Are you sending the responses to the individuals' email addresses? If so,
you should realize that many people "munge" (alter in order to confuse)
their email addresses to avoid becoming the target of spammers who "harvest"
newsgroups like this one for addresses to send their garbage to.
Instead of replying to individuals, why not send your responses to the
newsgroup and let everybody have the benefit? *That's* what newsgroups are
all about.

I am under the impression that according to the Rules of Netiquette, one
should never respond to a poster's e-mail unless the poster has
specifically requested a private reponse.

Yep. That's true.

When I post to a newsgroup, such as this one, I expect a reply
via the newsgroup in most cases, not via Email unless I specifically
solicit it.
Many people, including me, mung their addresses when posting to
newsgroups because harvesting addresses from newsgroups is
one of the spammers' primary sources of addresses for spamming.

news groups are unmoderated and uncontrolled.
alas you will get very little positive responces on the issue of spamm
spoofing addresses.
its mandatory. period. if you post (at least in the US) to any newsgroup
with your real address you stand a nearly 100% chance of having your inbox
utterly DESTROYED by spam in as little as a few hours.
I happen to have a domain name and can post with a real address with the
only address that is so far relatively immune to spamm. nospam@nerys.com
filters kill it since once you remove the nospam (common spoof term) you
have @nerys.com which is no longer a valid address.
alas some spammers are smarting up and dictionary attacking domains. grrrr.
that is ONE thing I do hate about outlook express. when I hit reply to
someone their e-mail address is treated as a solid object and not individual
characters. so I can not easily "remove" spamm proofing. I have to delete
all or none of the address and then "retype" the address without the spamm
spoof. so I don't bother.
if I reply I just reply TO the newsgroup.
If I ever met a spammer I would likely be the last thing he or she ever saw.
