Gollum like low carb look?

Steven C. \(Doktersteve\) - 06 Jan 2004 08:04 GMT Hey, i have a question.
in another newsgroup dedicated to fitness, someone said that if i start lifting and running (two things that i am doing now), i can get rid of that "gollum look" that low carb gives.
What do you think... I know that my skin is a little less shiny that normal when i do really low carb for a few days (like, induction levels), and i assume this is because of depleted glycogen levels...
Figure this is what he meant? I did not get offended, as he congradulated me on my loss, and helped me quite a bit, so it was not mean natured.

| "Gollum" is not in the dictionary. | | What is the troll saying? In "Lord of the Rings," The Gollum is a being -- once a hobbit -- who was supernaturally changed by the power of the Ring into a creature who is extremely skinny and emaciated-looking with big bulging eyes. Kind of like Nancy Reagan ...

LMAO! They have it a bit backwards. It's the LOW-FAT diet (not low-carb) that gives the bug-eyed, dry-skinned, starved, gollum look! The high fat content in low-carb eating keeps the skin soft and supple and eliminates the wrinkled, haggard, starvation trademark of low-fat.

Some of us recently had a discussion on the low carb look. Some people do seem to get an unhealthy look from following a low carb woe. But I'd rather be thin and need a bit of rouge than fat and rosy, so there you have it. <g>

Ergo, take away most fat and it is bound to have a negative health impact. But the body doesn't require carbohydrates to survive (Inuit indians have lived healthily for generations on fat and meat).
Quite frankly, I've never seen a low-carb success picture where someone looked unhealthy (Although I've seen plenty of those who are in dire need of a makeover to go with the weight loss! <g>). Can you refer us to some URLS of these "unhealthy" low-carb "after" pictures? I'd like to see them.
Thanks,

I'm not disputing that low carb is healthy. But, not everyone who is healthy looks good.

Can you refer us to some URLS > of these "unhealthy" low-carb "after" pictures? I'd like to see them. My mother used to point out that I was probably the most insensitive person on the planet. This is probably true. Nevertheless, the forms have been ground in to me to the extent that I can't quite see myself "take a look at X's pictures, she looks really bad. <cough>Violet</cough>
That only leaves myself as an example. I have a picture that illustrates this fairly well at http://www.geocities.com/taupewhidbey/dietprogress.html but I'm not having any luck connecting to the site at present. If you have more luck than I, you will have no trouble recognizing the picture in which I look like I was rode hard and put up wet. And yet, my health was fine at the time the picture was taken, and I had no worries beyond the usual ones. Oh, and I'm 40.

|| That only leaves myself as an example. I have a picture that illustrates | this fairly well at [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] | | Martha It's relevant because the facts as were presented are wrong. Again, it is a low-fat diet, not low-carb, that gives the dry-skinned, emaciated, bug-eyed look (typical of anorexia). I saw your pictures, and am not quite sure which one you are talking about. There is one earlier picture of you that is a rather harsh close-up because of the photography. In your later low-carb pix you are beautiful! And that one picture, to be frank, just makes my point I my original post. I really don't say it to be ugly; it's just the simple truth. As I stated, many people need to get a makeover, change their hair and style, to go witih their new slim look. You don't look emaciated or bug-eyed; just dated. Women need to wear their hair shorter as they age; long hair on older women makes them look hard and older. (Same principal applies to men). Again, in the later pix with your hair seept up you're gorgeous.
I know I'll get a lot of flak for saying this, but a lot of heavy women (and men) have such a bad self-image that they try to "hide" behind unattractive style (clothes, makeup and hair). There's a stereotype that is fairly accurate -- although certainly not all do this -- of the woman who is obese that wears her hair long and frizzy with no makeup and green stretchpants. As this woman loses weight, she starts to look a bit rough and older. Again, you lost this look in your latter pictures; I really don't see any connection with low carb.
p.s. The same thing happens with men; we need a style update as we lose weight also. Being slimmer doesn't automatically make us "hot!"
You're beautiful Martha!

It's easy in IE, but not really straightforward. Right-clicking the image, go to "properties" (on the bottom), and then copy the image url. It's a LOT easier in Opera, where "Copy image address" is in the menu

And many news servers would drop the post because of the attached binary file. Furthermore, if enough people posted binaries in asdl-c (which isn't a binary newsgroup), they might stop carrying the group. Best to stick with posting links.

An url isn't a binary file. In OE copy shortcut gets you a copy of the actual picture, but go to properties and copy the actual url and you have a link.

Except that most newsgroup service providers nowadays sh*tcan messages with binary attachments (above a certain size) that are posted in non-binary newsgroups and they do not propagate them to their own users or to their peers.

As you thinned down you wrinkled a little at first and even evened out completely. Your comments don't fit the pictures at all. For the spring dress one your comment is that you probably shouldn't wear it. Okay, in person without it would be fine but in front of the camera works just fine. In your business suit your comment complains about your posture when it looks like you're ready to kick Trump's butt in a business deal.
