Hi. I am thinking of starting a low carb diet (like the Atkins diet). Can
any body here tell me how much  weight they lost and in how long please?

Hey!  That first page was a shocker!  <g>  You are looking very
fit, and with a good incentive to be that way.

I started on July 4 2003 and am down 44 pounds.  I have not weighed
for several days because I do it very infrequently so that I can
concentrate on following the Atkins plan rather than on the day to day
fluctuations in weight.

I have found this group very helpful.  Ask whatever questions you have
here.  Get the Atkins book and follow it.

Good luck.

I started in March '03 and have lost 52 pounds. The key to my sucess was in
doing the following things:

1. I decided that I WAS going to get down to my ideal weight.

2. I began using www.fitday.com because ... if you can't measure it, you
can't manage it.

3. I set up weekly goals for calorie/fat/carb/protein intake and checked my
goals daily against the www.fitday.com reports. If I slipped up one day, I
made the necessary corrections the next day. I lived in a "day tight
compartment". If I made mistakes one day, I took corrective action the next
day BUT I DID NOT try to make up for caloric or gram errors ... I just
corrected my actions so it would not happen again the next day. Each new day
was a new start and all was forgiven for the day before.

4. I only checked my weight once a week.

5. I set CHANGING THE WAY I EAT as my primary goal and reaching my ideal
weight as my secondary goal.

6. I supplemented my diet with Atkins Basic 3 and Atkins Essential Oils
($22/month total) in case the low-carb diet was causing deficiencies in any
vitimin, mineral or essential fatty acid area.

7. Most importantly, I NEVER allowed myself to go hungry ... EVER !!!

It worked ... and it is working!!!

Good Luck!

I highly recommend the low-carb approach.

Best Regards,

There are plenty of people here that have lost tons of weight (pun
intended:) including myself. I went from a size 22 down to a size 10 and
have kept it off, even thru the holidays, for the last 3 months. There are a
lot of interesting stories on the Atkins website too. Just click on
http://atkins.com/advice/success-stories.html

I have recently been inspired by George and Rachel Stella on the Food
Network too.

The hardest part for me was changing what I automatically ate when I
was hungry.  This took about a month of reworking my menu.  Now, I eat
the right things by default and feel weird when I cheat.  59 pounds in
6 months with no huge exercise program, just walks when the weather is
nice.  I'll never do high carb again.  I've gone from a 44 waste to a
36.  I'm now wearing the size pants I wore in high school 15 years
ago.  I've also gone from a 3xlt/2xlt shirt to lt.

I consider myself a success even though I still want to lose 25 pounds.  I
started at 250 on July 3, 2001, and I now weigh 175.  I am 74 years old,
probably the oldest one here, and I do not go out of my way to exercise.  I
went from a size 24 to a 14.  If  I can do it anyone can because during my
life I have tried just about every diet that came along, and always regained
the weight plus more.  I would probably lose faster if I exercised, but for
now I am enjoying wearing the smaller size clothes.  I am still losing even
though it is very slowly.

I love this way of eating because you do not feel you just have to have
something more to eat all the time.  It leaves you very satisfied.  I live
in Las Vegas most of the year and go out to the buffets at least 3 times a
week.  I am never tempted by the huge dessert bars, just eat all the meat
and fish I want, along with some salad and veggies.

Good luck and stay with it.  Sometimes you will come to a halt but you
always will start losing again if you persevere.

My wife and I have been on a low carb diet since November 1st and have
lost a combined 51 pounds. And, I might add, this was through
Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Wow, I didn't expect so many replies in such a short time! Thanks a lot
guys. Well, from reading your stories, it looks like it works, I just needed
to hear it  from real people rather than reading stories on web sites
promoting the diet and seeing them on TV.  I will definitely start a low
carb diet.
Well done to all of you as well for the weight loss, I will hopefully be
joining your ranks in a few months.

Have lost 63lbs in just over six months.  Started at 300lbs on 9 June,
and am now 237.  Have gone down from wearing a 28/30 (UK) to a 22/24
(UK).

I'm 65.  One day I looked in the mirror and didn't recognize myself.  I started
Low Carb in April and slowly lost a total of 42 lbs as of today.  I've started
exercising 3 times a week at a local health club - never exercised before - and
I feel great.  I've given away a ton of clothes and I walk right by the plus
sizes.  I can't wait to go out and be with people and live a new life.  I
lowered my cholesterol from 258 to 183.  I plan to stay on low carb until I"ve
lost at least 60 lbs.  I"m never hungry

Hi, first of all congratulations on researching this amazing way of
life and thinking about giving it a try!
I have been LCing since August 18, 2003 and as of this morning have
lost 51 lbs.  It is a very easy program to follow and I think you will
find that once you start there is no way you will want to go back to
your old ways.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do and I hope to see you on this
board joining us in the future.  Best Wishes!!!

Thanks a lot to the people who have posted more replies. Every time I come
back here I get more encouragement, and more confidence in the knowledge
that this works.
I haven't read the Atkins Diet book or anything, but I have started eating
low carb. After looking into it, I think eating high carb food is definitely
the reason I have not been loosing weight whilst "dieting" over the past
years I have tried. I used to eat things like tuna or banana sandwiches for
dinner every day, and a lot of pasta or rice dishes for tea thinking they
would help me loose weight as they were low in fat. If I was hungry in the
evening, I would eat bread or have another sandwich. I have now made sure
that there is no bread rice or pasta in the house. I have stocked up on eggs
to snack on, and I eat the tuna without the bread. My next step is to look
into all the low carb foods available.

Well you *do* have the Atkins website to refer to even if you have not
read the book yet.

I lost 65 pounds in 7 months.  Toward the end, as my weight loss
started to taper off, I began to consciously cut calories as well.

You really should read the book...
