Okay...Jan. 5, I went back to 20 gm/carbs "induction" to kick start my
weight loss. From mid-November to Jan. 5, I had gained 6 pounds back
from what I had lost previously, doing low carb. I'm pretty happy that
the damage was only 6 pounds, considering that I ate anything, and
everything, to excess for that time.
Anyway, I had an odd sensation yesterday, and I was wondering if
anyone had experienced it. I had a really strong smell of ammonia when
I inhaled deeply. I thought it might be something in the kitchen, but
it seemed to follow me. Even showering, if I breathed deeply, there
was a strong ammonia smell.
I've been in ketosis before, and according to the test strip, I'm not
there yet (in the past, I've "achieved" ketosis in about 36 hours so
it's not out of the realm of possibilities). I know about the "ketosis
breath", but hadn't heard about "ketosis smell". Anyone care to
comment?
Oh, and in just 2 days, I'm already down 3 pounds. Now that I know a
successful way to lose weight, I just don't stress when I fall off the
wagon for a period of time. By Jan. 16, or so, I expect to be at my
pre-binge weight.
Thanks for responding.

Many people mistake the smell of ketones (acetone smell) with that of
ammonia.

Lee,
Ammonia is a product of the breakdown of protein. When you eat far more
protein than your body needs, it will be excreted in the urine, breath, etc.
Women may notice a "diaper rash" reaction when this happens.
If you can smell it, you can be sure other people are too--very strongly.
Just yesterday I briefly encountered a friend who has restarted her low
carb diet after the holidays and her dragon's breath was bad enough that it
was hard to get within 3 feet of her. <sigh>
Try eating less protein to see if this helps. Eating less protein can also
improve weight loss.

Well, I did breathe into my hands to see if there was anything
offensive there, and I did ask my husband if he smelled anything (and
he WOULD tell me if I had bad breath). It wasn't on my breath...it was
something I only sensed when I inhaled very deeply.
I also have close friends at work, who we can freely tell, if we
stink. So far, no one has said a word.
And, I'm not noticing the smell today.
Thanks for your input. It was just something I had noticed that I had
never experienced before, when my carbs are very restricted.

Same thing here. I went back on Induction level carbs after going off
during the holidays and on the second day I started to reek. My
husband calls it "going through the stinky period" -- unpleasant odors
from every orifice. Okay, maybe not my ears. But still.
With me, I've found that it goes away after a couple of days. Drinking
a LOT of water helps, a little. Meanwhile, I take two showers a day,
change my underwear a few times and use several Listerine breath
strips.

When that happens to me, it usually means I need to clean the cat box.

I've noticed this too, and I invariable go and check the cat's litter box
because that's almost what it smells like, but it just lasts for a whif or
two, then it's gone. I've had SOs confirm that it's not breath, but hadn't
made the association to having taken or released a "really deep" breath.
Will do that next time it happens, if it happens again. As another poster
suggested, I've upped my water intake a lot and that may prevent the
"ammonia-whif-syndrome" from recurring.

Ahhhhhhhhh. Have you been sick? The only time I experienced that
was when I segued from a cold into a sinus infection.

Nope - pretty darn healthy right now. Can't remember the last time I
had a cold, and I don't think I've ever had a sinus infection.

Lee,
Have you been working out quite a bit?
I ask this because my husband is a body builder and he has often had this
happen to him. It is your body burning muscle. There is a medical term for
it--I can't think of it, and my husband is sleeping. I have had it a few times.
It smells exactly like ammonia, and burns the inside of your nose. If you are
exercising a lot, you might need to up your carbs a bit and drink more water.
Good luck.

Yup - it was definitely an ammonia smell - not acetone. My nose didn't
burn - more of a tingle.
Wow...interesting. Actually, I've been exercising a lot. After too
long a time not exercising, I kind of went back to it rather
aggressively. Since Dec. 29, I've taken two days off. Other than that,
it's been every day (for about an hour).
Hate to think I'm burning muscle. I'll try to increase my water, but
I'm only in day 4 of induction - I'd really hate to increase my carbs
at this point. (I'm really feeling motivate right now - already
feeling "lighter" without the carb load).
I'd be interested to hear more, if your husband has anything else to
add.
Thanks for the info.

It sounds like too much protein. The low carbs is not the problem. Cut the
protein.
