Interesting study. Maybe it's not so vital that low carbers stop
drinking coffee after all. Too bad I don't like coffee more.

Rebecca
Rebecca,
It's never been vital or even necessary to stop drinking coffee to lose
weight on a low carb diet. That's another one of the arbitrary rules that
Atkins came up with that don't hold up to testing.
Lots of us lose weight while drinking coffee.
That said, the study has things backwards if you give it some thought.
People who drink 6-8 cups of coffee are likely to be people with very low
natural levels of stress hormones. That's why they CAN drink that much
coffee without getting overwhelming cases of the jitters.
We know that having naturally high levels of cortisol is associated with
developing diabetes. So people on track to get diabetes tend to have those
high cortisol levels and cannot, physically drink all that coffee.
My Sweetie who is not diabetic and is thin and active comes from a family
where diabetes is very common. He gets the jitters after drinking a single
cup of full caffeine coffee. I can handle one or two a day but only before
lunch. After that I'm up all night. It's been that way for years.
So if you looked at our coffee drinking you might say that the lack of
coffee "caused" a blood sugar abnormality, when in fact, the low coffee
intake reflects a preexisting metabolic condition--high cortisol.
