Mirek Fidler - 07 Jan 2004 21:53 GMT Hi,
recently I started to like flaxseed. It seems be rather ideal kind of LC desert / snack - 3g fiber, 1g net carbs per tbs, 59kcal, and right lipid types, if somebody cares...
So my consumption now slowly increases (well, not much, 3tbs a day now
:) My question is - is there something wrong with flaxseed, so that I should know between eventually eating more of it? I have read somewhere there are some toxic parts in it...

That can be very uncomfortble.

That can be very uncomfortble. Thanks. Might I ask what amount is "too much" ? I am drinking about half a gallon or more...

However, these kinds of things are YMMV, afaik.
Diane Mancino - 08 Jan 2004 01:39 GMT I have some flax seeds that are over a year old, I just found out that they are very unhealthy if rancid- and bad for you. only buy what you can use up and keep refrigerated

Do you think they could go rancid within this time ?

I follow their recommendations.

A great snack that I found at an LC grocery store is Amy Lyn's Original Flax Thins. The ingredients are: Flax seeds, water, salt, sesame, poppy, caraway seeds, dried onion and dried garlic. They're like a cracker. Serving size is 27gm (just about an ounce). 11gm carbs/8gm finber - net total 3gm carbs.
The flax seeds in these crackers are most definitely not ground - they are whole seeds.
By the way, there's no way I could eat an ounce of these - they are so rich, that a 1-2" square is all I can handle at a time. Great salty crunch.

Flax seeds are hard and very small. if you eat them whole, it is unlikely that you'll chew them up....as a result the seeds will pass through you undigested, according to

Hence, you don't get the full benefit of them. It jives with my personal experience.

Are the crackers themselves made of ground flax? It sounds that way since flax seed is the first ingredient. Are you sure the caraway seens are not what's on top?

These "crackers" are really just a mass of seeds compressed together into a flattened mass. There is no cracker with seed topping - it's just all seeds held together with the water, I guess. I presume, they make a paste of all the whole seeds, flavorings and water, then roll or press it out into a thin layer, bake or dry it, then break it into pieces. The pieces are irregular - these weren't made in any kind of mold for shape.

Interesting.....I wonder if they roast those seeds to make them easier to chew up...
