Been doing Atkins for 4 months. Started at 240lbs, 199 tot Chol, 145
ldl, 44 hdl, 134 triglycerides (on Zocor). Down to 210 but my tot Chol
shot up to 404, 348 ldl, 46 hdl but triglycerides dropped to 115.
Stopped taking the Zocor about 2 weeks into the WOE (fell under the
spell of the "cholesterol lowering" effects of Atkins). I have stayed
at below 20 grams of carbs throughout, never actually leaving
Induction. I never cheat! Every once in a while I have an Atkins bar
(avg about 1 every 2 weeks or so). Drink >70 oz of water a day and
workout religiously 5x wk for min 1 hour (most days over 1 1/2
hours.). Although I'm happy with the weight loss, my ldl cholesterol
is obviously cause for extreme concern and am now back on Zocor. Whats
the deal? Went from normal cholesterol levels (slightly elevated ldl)
to now taking twice the dosage of my medication. This happen to anyone
else? Calls into question the whole Atkins WOE. Also my reflux prob
never disappeared. On the plus side, I have more energy than I've ever
had and was feeling pretty smug till I got the latest bloodwork. Any
help?

I would treat this situation as a health emergency and request advice
from a doctor rather than a bunch of internet strangers. I would make
an effort to locate a good doctor.

If you insist on advice from internet strangers, I would note that
according to some research, about 75% of people are not sensitive to
dietary cholesterol but about 25% of people are sensitive. So you,
naturally, may be the sensitive type.

Also, it is known that mild but prolonged exercise such as walking,
has beneficial effect on the hdl/ldl ratio.

My advice is to, first, haul yourself to a doctor pronto, and second,
start a real exercise program.

If you could not go to a doctor for some reason, I would immediately
stop eating cholesterol laden foods, even if it means abandoning
atkins diet, and switch to some diet that suits you better. More plant
foods, less meat and eggs.

You stopped taking it? Without your doctors advice? Not smart.

Were you fasting before getting this test done?

What kind of workout?

Why were you on Zocor in the first place?  Your numbers were borderline,
from my understanding.  Just losing the weight could have helped, unless you
have a history of high cholesterol.

Don't ever decide to stop taking medications on your own.  You had no right
to get smug.  I'm surprised your doctor didn't drop you. And if the doctor
advise this, then you really do need another doctor.

Have you looked into benecol?

Won't help if the OP doesn't work with the good doctor.

What the hell is a real exercise program?  Geez.

You seem real good at giving advice that should be of no use.
