If you like to listen to music when you exercise, what do you listen to?
I'm trying to compile some music to play on my Walkman while I walk my laps
at the park and I'm running out of ideas.
Thanks,
Linda

For working out on a rower, music: King Crimson's Beat
but I usually watch movies when I use the bike.

I do both -- I have the closed-captioning on, turn the volume down and crank up
the music, getting both a story AND a beat :-)

What did you listen to as a kid? Which artists do you like now?
Right now I'm getting ready to ride my exercise bike. I've got my little
mp3 player on (not my iPod) and I'm listening to old stuff by Michael
Jackson, Madonna, Tina Marie, Tu Pac, etc. Fast tunes with a nice beat. I
ride to the beat. I like stuff that I can double the beat on, too.

We just picked up a 2-CD pack at Costco (Canada): "Fitness Mix"
(basically, all the 80's-esque dare I say...ok, I won't..."dance" music)
"Pumped Up Cardio Grooves and "Pumped Up Retro Grooves".
I think the 2-CD pack went for around 15.00 Cdn (12 US)

I made an exercise CD with the following songs:
Da Da Da (aka the Volkswagon Song)
Good Rockin' Tonight (Wynonnie Harris -- BEST version!)
I Like Big Butt (Sir Mix A Lot)
Marie Laveau (The Flying Neutrinos)
A Fool In Love (Tina Turner)
Mr. Zoot Suit (the Flying Neutrinos (Blast From the Past swing dance number)
Mr. Bombastic (Shaba Ranks)
I'm Gonna Be (The Proclaimers - theme from Benny & Joon)
In the Summertime (Mungo Jerry)
5 O'clock World (former Drew Carey theme)
Do Wah Diddy (Manfred Mann, I think)
YMCA (The Village People)
Big Girls Don't Cry (The Four Seasons)
Living On Tulsa Time (Eric Clapton)
3 Cool Cats (3 Cool Cats)
Dr. Demento version of the Witchdoctor song (ting, tang, walla, walla bing, bang)
Movin' On Up (Janet DuBois)
Trickle, Trickle (manahattan transfer)
Twist & Shout (Beatles)
Coconut (Nilsson)
Roll Mr. Jelly (Saffire, The Uppity Blues Women (inspired my screenname))
Mony, Mony (Tommy James & The Shondells)
I Think We're Alone Now (Tommy James & The Shondells)
You Never Can Tell (Pulp Fiction dance number)
Hanky Panky (Tommy James & The Shondells)
Volkswagon ambiance music (everyone on the street moving to the rhythm)
Montego Bay (Bobbie Bloom)
Stay (The Four Seasons) (for cool-down) (I have this as #10 so I can know exactly
where it is when I'm ready to do a cool-down)

If you use a peer-to-peer program, just enter "workout" and should have
many selections to choose from.

Depends on what type of music gets your imagination going...for me, it's
classic rock or current rock and roll music, i.e. Beatles, Jimi Hendrix,
the Rolling Stones, Metallica, Disturbed, etc.
I alternate days, too, with 70s pop or current dance music, like old
school R&B, ABBA, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, or Kylie Minogue. Diversity
is key. :)
Have fun!

I get these 30 minute casettes because when I do my cardio I do a 5 minute
warm up, 20 minutes of sustained cardio at or near my target heart rate, and
then a 5 minute cool down.
Anyway, on the 30 minute casettes I record 5 minutes of mellow music, to get
me started, and then 20 minutes of driving rock music and then I repeat the
intro so I know its time to cool dowm. My selection varies but it is
primarily guitar oriented classic rock. For example on one tape I have
Hendrix Voodoo Chile Slight return and the Jeff Beck Group, Goin down. Thats
15 minutes of driving hard rock right there. Gets my heart going.

A lot of 70's and 80's music and one of my fav songs to listen to
while I am working out (when I go for a walk) is' Dreams' by the
Cranberries.

My favorite exercise CD is "Motorcade of Generosity" by Cake, but I don't
think I could just walk to it because it always makes me dance. Everyone's
music taste is different though, what do you like?

That intriguing list does prove that diversity is key. I'm trying to remember
the name of the band that did "5 o'clock World"...the Vogues, maybe? 1965?

Not sure -- I know they did a version of it, but when I listed to a sample at
Amazon, it seems slightly different than the one I have (which is DEFINITELY the
one that was used on one season of the Drew Carey show). Could just be a matter
of a different recording session, though. For instance, I LOVE Nina Simone
singing "I Want A Little Sugar In My Bowl", but I have two versions of it -- one
version is just so-so, but the other one captivates me (I wouldn't want to
EXERCISE to EITHER version :-). Shrug.

listen to and enjoy everything from oldies rock to bluegrass to jazz to new

That Cake album is hard to describe, but it's definitely not rap. Do you
have one of those music stores where they let you listen before you buy?

you'll probably like cake just fine. they're quite a good band, and if

Hmm, once upon a time I bought and listened a lot to Iced Earth's Burnt

How about "Rocky Top." A number of artists have recorded the song over the years. The Ricky Skaggs version ought to send you
skipping down the street in fine fashion.

My MP3 player is heavily loaded with Rammstein, Disturbed, Korn, Rob
Zombie, and some of the more bombastic techno out there. But then, my
tastes are more geared towards lifting weights than long low-intensity
cardio, so YMMV.

Mostly whichever new CD I've got. I really like Moonsorrow's
Rivenkantaja, or Loreena McKennit's Book of Shadows or Live in Paris and
Toronto, or the soundtrack for Return of the King at the moment.

I am a big fan of Loreena's, too. I also have the first LOTR soundtrack,

I would call Moonsorrow similar, but 99.999999999999999999999999999% of
all other people wouldn't. It is a Finnish "epic metal" band, blending
death metal with atmospheric viking folk music and a touch of new age
atmospheres. Often makes you think of a Viking party with mead and ripe
meat off the bone, and singing and handclaps.
They use accordion, mouth harp, violin, guitars, drums, bass, etc.
This new album is perfect in every sense (musically and technically).

I have a dell digital jukebox, it is a hard drive based little mp3 player,
about the same size as an ipod to give you an idea.
I have a bunch of Henry Rollins music that I have put on it.
It is hard rock, but when I am lifting I find that it works well... It has a
fast tempo, and is extremely "energized" sort of music.
That as well as some fatboy slim, and daft punk for doing cardio (running,
etc).

You lift to music, Steven? Cardio I can understand.....with weights, you
need to pay attention to form and not getting hurt. Be careful.

Military cadences. I haven't tried these, but a friend loves them. I think
he's got the chants and songs that the soldiers use when they are marching,
not just a drum beat or a band.\
Would certainly keep a steady beat for you...
Personally, I go for Van Halen, Yes and Pat Methany.
