Can't hold the carrots

I'm a little irritated with our local restaurants (southeast U.S.) because
their salads come pre-mixed with shredded carrots.  Although the restaurants
don't add the shredded carrots, the wholesalers do.  It's impossible to pick
out all of the carrot bits, so how do I count the extra carbs in a typical
chef salad?  Or is the extra carb count negligible?

(Btw, I'm back on induction after the holidays.  That's why I'm curious.)

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't worry about them. Those shreds are such a small amount of the
total you are eating.  Besides, they'll make you see better in the dark!

True.  And that probably explains how I was able to catch my wife in the act
of taking $20 out of my wallet to give to my son last night.  Not that I
didn't know this has been going on, but this time I could actually see it.

David, you might want to make sure that have the minimum amount of carbs
that the Atkins diets instructs you to aim for.  Your body needs those
vitamins and and minerals.  There is a reason they shoot for 20 grams.

I am not doing Atkins, I didn't do induction, but I've been eating bagged
salad with shredded carrots all along in my weight loss journey with no ill
effects.  The bagged salad in my fridge right now says serving size = 1.5
cups, with 4g carbs, 1g fiber.  Ingredients: Iceberg lettuce, carrots, and
red cabbage, in that order.  I usually get the kind with spinach or other
dark greens, but they were out, so I got this kind.

I wouldn't worry about the amount of carbs you get from shredded carrots in
salad.

Now, if you were eating a bowl full of cooked carrots....

Oh, don't I wish.  I'm the type who wants anything that has become
"forbidden fruit".  A bowl of cooked carrots with a nice glaze on top would
be peachy (in the figurative sense, that is).  Of course, I'd feel like crap
after I ate it, but that spoils the fantasy completely.

it's probably no more than a tablespoon or two of carrots that you're
getting per serving.

fitday sez that a quarter cup of shredded carrots has 2.79 grams of
carbs.  you're probably getting at least half of that, and maybe more
like a third.

I know how you feel - I'm allergic to raw carrots and I am forever picking
them out of premixed salads.  How tiresome!  I don't know what to tell you
about the carbs; I suppose that whether it's enough to worry about depends
upon how much you eat (according to Fitday, 1/4 cup of shredded carrots has
2g net carbs).  What I would say though is that with pratice one can become
proficient in avoiding most of the carrots even in premixed salads.  That
way, the carbs you consume in carrots will be negligible.  It's a pain, but
it's one way to handle them, at least during induction.

I've tried that, and for some reason, it really annoys my wife.  I don't
know why she becomes so irritated with me when I begin my "picking", but she
acts as though I'm committing some drastic faux pax at the table or
something.  Women are strange.  :-D

Hey!  I resemble that remark.  :-)

Maybe you should, er, develop an allergy to carrots like I have.  Your wife
can't become irritated if you are separating the carrots in order to avoid
going into anaphylactic shock, right?  ;-)

My problem is that my wife is way more intelligent than I am.  She sees
straight through me like a plate-glass window.  I don't think that would
fly.  Women may be strange, but they can be very bright.

I've always wondered about that as well, because it happens a lot
here.  Personally, I try not to worry too much about the tiny amounts
of carrot I ingest that way, but I do steer very clear of the
situations where I'll find my plate loaded with raw (or cooked)
carrot.  This is not just because of my low carb way of eating, but
because I've never really liked carrots.

And it can at last be admitted after my Christmas day off.  I really
do hate potatoes. I wasn't imagining it, they taste of mud. Blech.

You're supposed to clean them first.  (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Seriously though, I envy your ability to dislike carrots and potatoes.  Wish
I could develop it.
