I remember reading in a Atkins book or somewhere (maybe the atkins
site) that your Multi-Vitamins should not contain iron. But I an not
remember why and I can not find any reference to it. Does any one have
any information / opinions on this?   Thanks!!

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

I think that's because many doctors think we don't need any extra iron. That
is, we get enough from the foods we consume. Some people will need some
supplemented, but for most people, no.

Need iron?  Come drink my tap water.  Bring a bottle of CLR with you if
you don't mind, my tub is turning orange again :)

My grandparents lived in a small town near a hill called Iron Mound. The
area was *very* saturated with iron. I know the taste well. The county
is called Saline County, also because of what was in the soil. So when
the water from the well got thru the water softener it was *really*
salty. <g>

If I remember correctly, red meat is loaded with heme iron.

There is evidence that having too much iron in the blood contributes
to various heart problems - so you don't want to get too much.  Also,
on the Atkins diet people tend to eat more red meat than before, thus
they have already increased the amount of iron they are getting.  So
iron supplements while on Atkins are generally not needed or even
harmful.

That said, you bring up a second excellent point.  NOT EVERYONE IS THE
SAME.  I've been a blood donor for a long time and have always tended
to run borderline for iron, having been deferred a couple of times
because it was too low (rare in men, but the tests don't lie).  So
while IN GENERAL iron supplements are not needed I have test data that
indicates that FOR ME a small amount of supplemental iron is a good
idea.

You get plenty just from eating lots of dark green veggies which is the
norm on this kind of diet.  So even if you don't eat a lot of red meat
you might want to consider a supplement without iron.
