I finally saw some of the LC smart ones and more of the LC Lean
Cuisine meals at my local (usually deficient) store.  I can't say
they are too appealing, in part because they are, for the most
part, very low-cal (I saw as low as 140 cals for a so-called
meal), and the ingredients are far from what I'd use in my own
kitchen.  On one hand, I want these things to sell, so the
manufacturers will realize that LC interests people, on the other
I don't really want those.  So what can I do?  At least the
expensive Mike's meals contain real ingredients and have a
semi-reasonable amount of calories.

I used to eat these things (pre-LC versions, I mean)....they were so full of
msg that they were causing me problems.  Do these thing have lots of stuff
like that?

I think people ought to cook their on meals.  I'll all for LC torillias and
stuff that like, but not the meals.   Just me, I guess.  To each his own...

I'd have to go back and look.  I don't like seeing the mile-long
list of ingredients, things that I do not use in my own kitchen.
Don't know if msg is among them.

Jean,

When you are looking for msg, you'll often find it hidden under any one of
dozens of ingredient names.  Hydrolyzed plant protein is one of them, if I
remember correctly. Soy sauce also is high in it.

The Hellers have a very interesting section on MSG and all the ways t is
hidden in processed food in their more recent edition of the Carbohydrate
Addicts Diet book.

They mention that it is used in the lab to cause rats to gain weight.

I do look for that.  Have forgotten some of the odious ingredients
over the years though.  Hmmm.  I'm going to have to read the
Hellers' comments.  (Hmmm.  According to my more recent reading,
IIRC, that should be Hellers's I think.)

reward the good ones, avoid the bad ones.  That way, you're reinforcing
positive behavior.

Reward manufacturers of things that you find tasty and
healthful... It's that simple.

Oh, I was going to tell you, I found them too at Star (Shaw's) this
morning, 4 for $7 but you're Jean-y on the Spot, as usual!   8 )
The carb content seemed more in line for what I was looking for (8 to
12 per meal) instead of the white Lean Cuisine (15-25!).   Not perfect
for all the reasons you mention, but the price is right, the packaging
is right (re precious freezer space).  I really enjoyed the Mike's
meals (the choice of veggies was very creative) but the huge boxes and
price just make them impractical for me.  I bought a bunch of the
Asian beef and veggies and several of the chicken varieties - haven't
tried any yet.

I want reports, please!  The only LC/Smart one I bought is the
three-cheese chicken with broccoli.  That was partly because it
didn't matter if the cheese sauce ran into the broccoli segment.
The box shows three little pieces of chicken, so I don't have high
hopes.

I agree about the box size and the price.  It is hard for me to
buy my beloved Mike's right now, even at $1 off, because they are
still $6 each (and the salmon is $7).  My current favorite is the
mustard chicken.  It seems to be less overcooked than it was.  I
got turned off of the short ribs because they started using a
different cut (of short rib?) sometimes.  It was VERY fatty and
seemed to have more unrelated fat globbed on top of it.  Ugh.
(The smaller, taller pieces are better.)

Where does one look for "Mike's" brand?

I only know about Massachusetts, where I have only found them at
Stop & Shop.  I think you may also be able to get them online--and
they have a cheesecake too.  (Of course, it is easy enough to make
one's own cheesecake--and, for me, anyway, less dangerous to make
individual portions.)

I'd write to the manufacturers, thanking them for the attempt, and
explaining that it doesn't have to be low cal to be low carb.  I think a
lot of people really believe low carb is the same as high protein, and they
just don't realize they can add fat to improve taste, instead of that long
list of pseudo-food ingredients.
