I've put together a page that discusses what happens when you crash off your
diet, and some strategies that can help you get back on.

As always, constructive comments are encouraged!

Jenny, as a relative newcomer to the newsgroup, allow me to add my thanks
to many I'm sure you've received over time for doing all this and sharing
it with us. Some people just leave the world better than they found it.

Jenny,

Please don't interpret the following question as my questioning your
suppositions on this page.  My personal experience reflects, and is
supported by, these words and, as such, I am somewhat pre-disposed to agree
with much of what you have written here.

However, I never consider my personal experience to be more than anecdotal
evidence.  I'm an engineer by education, practice and just plain old natural
inclination, so I will always tend to look for the data behind the data.  Do
you have, and can you site, references for what you have written here?  If
the reference is your personal experience and, as you stated, your own
"research project" that is fine, but it would be helpful, for me at least,
to know the lines.

Again, my intent is not to challenge you, I prefer to strengthen you in
fact.  As you stated at the end of your page, knowledge is power, and I am
merely seeking to expand my knowledge.  The entire industry of diet,
nutrition and health is somewhat obfuscated (is that an understatement?) and
certainly divided, let's help clear up some of that.

Thank you for taking the time to write down and publish this.  You are one
of those to whom I referred in my original posting as one of those who
share, seemingly selflessly, with all.  I appreciate your continued support
and involvement.

JJ.

JJ,

The best reference I can point you to for technical details on the
physiology of low carb dieting, carb ups, etc, would be Lyle MacDonald's
book, The Ketogenic Diet.

Lyle reviewed hundreds of studies, all of which are footnoted in his book.
It was from the research he summarized that I learned that the short term
increase in insulin resistance comes from a lack of digestive hormones.
There's a whole lot more which is very helpful in understanding the nature
of the weight loss, glycogen refilling and water weight gain, etc.

It's back in print and available at Amazon.com for anyone who might be
interested.  Or you can buy the download at
http://www.mesomorphosis.com/books/ketogenic-diet.htm  (Disclosure. I have
no relationship to Lyle or this book except that I'm a fan.)

The information about insulin release being in response to the previous meal
comes from the Heller's  book The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet.   Their whole
questionable diet idea  uses this fact to let the dieter do a daily carb up
without resulting weight gain, but the authors are are strangely silent
about the rebound hunger that occurs when you do a subsequent low carb meal.
Still, I've found this effect to be very repeatably true.
